ACTIVITY THAT’S ME! That’s Me! Time: 10 min Grades: pre-K - 8 Concepts: Diversity, Community Social Skills: Cooperation, Empathy Objectives: • Students will identify characteristics about themselves. • Students will discover differences and similarities among their classmates. • Students will demonstrate respectful behavior to classmates who differ from themselves. Materials: • That’s Me! statement list (see below) Directions: • Explain to students that they are going to be responding to statements you make by standing if it is true for them. When they stand, they should proudly say (not scream), “That’s Me!” Ask them to look around the room and silently notice how many students are standing/sitting for that statement. Ask students to sit back down after each statement. (Pre-K – K: see Adaptation below) • Practice with an example statement: “Please stand and say “That’s Me!” if you are a girl.” Allow time for students to stand. Compliment girls for moving safely, respectfully, using an appropriate voice, and boys for remaining quiet in their seats. Repeat with “…if you are a boy.” • Discuss what it should look like/sound like when someone makes a different choice from you (notice it, but do not make a negative comment or gesture). Explain that whether someone chooses to stand or not is up to them. • Tell students that you will give them time after the activity to discuss what they noticed. During the activity, the only talking should be when students say “That’s Me!” Debrief: • • • • Praise students for following directions and respecting others’ responses. Ask students what new things they learned about their classmates. Discuss how it felt to be standing at the same time as others. Did it feel good to belong? Ask how it felt to stand alone or with only a few others, or to sit while most others were standing. © 2012 PEACEFUL SCHOOLS Revised by DSR 04/12 All rights reserved. Page 1 of 4 ACTIVITY THAT’S ME! • • Tell students that sometimes it feels good to be on your own, to find something that makes you UNIQUE. Other times, we like being part of a group. Remind students that RESPECTFULLY learning more about each other helps us find ways we are each unique, and what we have in common as a community. Grades 2-8 Additional Debrief: • Were the statements I read about INSIDE or OUTSIDE traits? (Both – ask students for examples of each.) • Which were more interesting to find out about your classmates? Why? (Students will often focus on the INSIDE traits, specifically the “worm,” “rich and famous,” “President,” and “pizza” statements.) • Was it hard for us to learn about each other this way? (No) How did we learn these new things? (Asking questions, seeing who stood or sat.) Finding out about what people like, their interests, skills, families, etc., is not difficult – it just requires talking, asking questions, and paying attention. • Were there any statements that had everybody standing? (Highlight the statements: “Don’t like when people joke about my family,” “Want to be treated with respect.” Remind students that these are traits that nearly all people share.) Adaptations: • Pre-K – K Adaptation: Instead of having students stand up and sit down, ask students to move to one side of the room if the statement is true for them, or to the other side of the room if the statement is not true. Rather than saying “That’s Me,” ask students to give a high-five to the other people on their side of the room. Teachers/facilitators may have to coach students to get them to move to the appropriate side of the room. • Have students submit their own list of traits/likes/dislikes and anonymously add them to your list. • Ask for student volunteers to read the next item on the list. © 2012 PEACEFUL SCHOOLS Revised by DSR 04/12 All rights reserved.
