Haar bei München, June 2010
Another great distinction for an aeris seat:
Nominated for the top German design prize:
The “swoppster” 3D active swivel stool for
children.
It is already the third noble distinction this year and one that the
developers at the dynamic seat specialists aeris are particularly proud of.
Their youngest product, the “swoppster” 3D active swivel stool for children
that is built for lots of movement, has now been nominated by the
renowned Design Council for the Design Award of the Federal Republic of
Germany 2011.
This is the highest official German award for design. It counts as the “prize
of prizes”. The reason: no other design award sets such strict criteria on
entries.
Since its market launch in autumn 2008, the innovative, completely
different looking children's stool that moves in all three dimensions and
which is designed for children just learning to sit and primary school
children, has once again achieved official recognition in addition to the
maintained enthusiasm of children, teachers and movement scientists.
At last more movement for children
Educationists and sports teachers have long been concerned about
children's growing lack of movement. Dr. Dieter Breithecker, Head of the
German Federal Working Group for the Promotion of Posture and
Movement says that “in the first 11 years or so, children have a particularly
strong natural urge to move. This is nature's way of ensuring a continuous
fresh supply of oxygen and sensorimotor stimuli to the brain, the control
centre for growth and development”.
However, today, children spend almost as much time sitting as adults in
offices - up to nine hours per day. In school, doing homework, doing
handicrafts, painting and drawing or in front of the computer... movement
goes short with the result that important stimuli for muscles and nerves
are not given, bad posture is on the increase accompanied by coordination
problems and concentration difficulties.
Sitting still makes you ill
Children change their posture every 60 to 90 seconds if they are allowed
to follow their natural urge to move. However, on conventional seats,
children are practically forced to sit still. The pelvis is fixed in a seat pan on
rigid seats. Children automatically react against this by fidgeting.
Sitting in movement keeps you alert and fit
The “swoppster” by aeris was built specially for movement. The active
seat's three-dimensional flexibility matches the children's natural desire
to move. They can follow each pulse, release tension, reduce
aggressiveness, and keep their muscles active and their brain alert
through the changing sensorimotor stimuli.
Dr. Dieter Breithecker: “Good children's seats support a dynamic sitting
behaviour. One important requirement is that they have a sitting surface
that can move. This is optimum for encouraging the necessary shift of load
for muscles and joints. Sitting in motion activates body and mind and is
instrumental in making children feel good. Strong back - alert mind!”
Children's jury has decided
The fact that this revolutionary health approach to children's seating is
also transported and accepted thanks to its child-oriented, user-friendly,
clear design is proven by the current nominations for the greatest German
design award, the universal design consumer favorite 2010 award and the
Good Design Award of the Chicago Athenaeum at the beginning of the
year.
By the way, a grand children's jury voted on the colour concept of the
“swoppster” right in the development phase. Since then, the “swoppster”,
which “grows” with the children and also adapts to their movements in two
other dimensions, is available in cherry red, juicy orange, apple green and
ocean blue. Equipped with or without rollers as required.

nomination.
