Team Captain Guide Thank you for joining the Fight For Air Climb as a Team Captain! By joining the Fight For Air Climb, you are making a positive impact in the lives of those affected by lung disease. Whether it’s searching for cures, keeping kids off tobacco, or fighting for laws that protect the air we all breathe, the work of the American Lung Association saves lives every day. Register • Now that you’ve registered, make sure you personalize your team webpage with your story, photos and your team goal. • Instruct your team members to register online at FightForAirClimb.org. When registering, they should select “Join a Team” and register under your team name. Recruit There’s no limit to how big your team can be! Recruiting a new team member can be easier than you think. Here are some ideas on how to recruit team members: • Directly ask family, friends, and co-workers. The #1 reason people join is because they were asked. • Be efficient! Recruit and fundraise at the same time. Send an email to family, friends and co-workers. Explain WHY you are climbing, then tell them how they can join your team. Include a link to your team page to encourage those who can’t join you to show their support by donating to your team. • Talk about your team! Word of mouth is often the best way to promote what you’re doing. Holiday party or family gathering coming up? Challenge everyone you speak with to join your team! • Challenge your Facebook friends and Twitter followers to join your climb team! Everyone loves the chance to make a bold statement or commitment on social media, especially for a good cause. • Place an article in your company newsletter or send a company-wide email. Maybe your employer will offer vacation hours, raffle a parking spot, or allow a dress down day to those who join the corporate team. • Display event flyers everywhere! Put them near your desk, in the company lounge, lunch room, fitness center, lobby, elevators and/or stairwell! Distribute them at your book club or PTO meeting—the more promotion, the better! • Recruit your company’s CEO to join your team. CEOs sometimes welcome the opportunity to mingle with their employees in an informal out-of-the-office setting. If your CEO cannot join you, ask for their support for your team by encouraging employees to get involved or by supporting the team with T-shirts, matching funds, or a direct donation. • Hold a kickoff party for team members to build excitement. Encourage them to recruit a new member for your team. This is a great opportunity to share the important work and mission of the American Lung Association! • Identify a Lung Champion—someone within your organization directly affected by lung disease—to share his/her personal story. It’s amazing how many people will stand up to share their story when asked. Fundraise When you fundraise as a team, you are working together to fund research and patient programs—and having fun at the same time! Here are some ideas on how to fundraise with your team: • Lead by example by customizing your online fundraising page. Participants who update their webpage with their personal story about why they climb raise 3x more than those who don’t. • Challenge your team members to beat the national fundraising average of $230 per climber. With 10 team members, you could raise $2,300 to support Lung Association mission, activities, and research! • Encourage each team member to make a self-donation toward their fundraising efforts. Making a self-donation encourages potential donors to contribute and shows that this cause is personally important to your team member. It will also help guide future donors—many donors see what the average donation size looks like before deciding on an amount to give! • Download the Fight For Air Climb mobile app for iPhone and Android to fundraise anytime, anywhere! • Plan a fundraising event—from Jeans Day at work to Trivia Night or an athletic event, there are many ways to put the FUN in fundraising. Thank Your Team Members and Donors • Don’t forget to say Thank You! It is most important to thank your team members after the event, so schedule a lunch, happy hour, or weekend get-together to celebrate your success! • Have a “Thank You Note” party where you and your team members can all write your thank you notes to your donors and share a photo or personal message about your experience at the Fight For Air Climb. • Update your Facebook page and include a thank you to your team members and donors—you can share your climb time, pictures of you and your team from the event, and/or ask your Facebook friends to consider making a last-minute donation in honor of your Lung Champion.
