MAsters in Economic science (MEconSc) CKL12 Programme Overview and Structure The MEconSc Degree is designed to prepare you for careers as professional economists in business, public sector, research, consultancy and education. It also provides foundations for undertaking further postgraduate studies including PhD programmes in Ireland and internationally. The programme equips students with the skills necessary for a practicing research economist, including the ability to identify and apply the core theories in microeconomics and macroeconomics to an economic problem as well as debating, discussing and communicating on contemporary issues and developments in the economic environment. The nature and role of economic theories is brought together in a research project which is completed at the end of the programme. The programme is available full-time (12 months) or part-time (24 months). The modules comprising the taught element of the programme (Part 1 – 60 credits) are: EC6604 Advanced Microeconomics 1 (5 credits); EC6605 Advanced Macroeconomics 2 (5 credits); EC6606 Advanced Macroeconomics 1 (5 credits); EC6607 Advanced Macroeconomics 2 (5 credits); EC6600 Econometrics: Theory and Applications 1 (5 credits); EC6601 Econometrics: Theory and Applications 2 (5 credits); EC6602 Contemporary Economic Debates and Ideas (5 credits); EC6603 Current Research Seminars (5 credits); EC6665 Quantitative Techniques for Economic Research (10 credits); EC6666 Research Methods and Professional Development (10 credits) Part 2 of the programme (30 credits) is the research element and consists of a Dissertation (EC6667 Dissertation in Economics). Part 1 consists of a combination of examination and coursework. EC6604, EC6605, EC6606, EC6607, EC6600 and EC6601 have a 60%-40% breakdown between final examinations and coursework. EC6602, EC6603, EC6665 and EC6666 are assessed completely by coursework. As previously stated, Part 2 consists of a Dissertation in Economics. 1. Identify and apply the core theory in microeconomics and macroeconomics required for a practicing research economist and for further studies. 2.Apply important mathematical and statistical skills required for a practicing research economist and for further studies. 3.Conduct applied research and disseminate the results in a research article. 4.Debate, discuss and communicate on contemporary issues and developments in the economic environment. 5.Appreciate the central issues and developments in economic science. Economic Consultants Candidates must have at least a 2H2 on the aggregate of all Economics courses in either a BComm with a Major in Economics, a BA (Hons) in Economics, a BSc (Hons) Finance, a Postgraduate Diploma in Economics of Business Practice, a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Economics Practice, a Higher Diploma in Economics (Competition Governance and Society) or the equivalent.
