LPC-e-Bulletin-we 15.7.2016

Welcome to this weeks LPC e-bulletin. w/e 15.7.2016.
08th July 2016
As promised, below are the details regarding the impending ‘BCOC’ COPD & Respiratory
Symptoms Public Health Campaign, due to commence very shortly in your pharmacy!
As you know; People over 50 are most at risk of having undiagnosed respiratory illness and make
up 97% of lung cancer diagnoses, therefore, as previously mentioned the campaign is aimed at men
and women aged 50 and over, as well as their family and friends. Attached, is ‘Public Health
England’s (PHEs) Official briefing sheet’ for the full details of the campaign including, key facts
and briefing for you and your colleagues.
We are now able to inform you that your campaign packs will soon be with you. You can expect to
receive yours direct to the pharmacy the week commencing the 18th July, addressed to the
Pharmacy Manager. The pack will include resources such as; posters, leaflets, briefing sheets,
shelf wobblers symptom sheets and dispensers.
We encourage you to adorn your pharmacy with the campaign materials provided upon receipt of
your campaign packs and commence the campaign as soon as you are able!
If for any reason you do not receive your packs by the 22nd July then please contact us
immediately via email [email protected] using the subject heading
‘Campaign pack NOT received’ (including your pharmacy name, address etc. in the main text) and
we will endeavour to rectify the situation for you ASAP.
We are also very pleased to announce to you that PharmOutcomes will be used this year to
record and collate your evaluations post campaign…
…Consequently, please find attached the ‘BCOC Respiratory Health Pharmacy Record Sheet’
which will provide key insight into what will be requested of you at the point of evaluation post
campaign, the mid/end of August. You will be provided 2 weeks from the close of the campaign to
complete and submit your evaluations to PharmOutcomes in line with your pharmacy contractual
obligations.
In order to make this as easy as possible for you, we request that where applicable e.g. in response
to question 2 “How many patients as a result of your conversations about the BCOC campaign were
referred to the GP for further consultation?” that you print off and keep a copy of the record sheet
in a prominent place for all staff to use in order to maintain an ‘active tally’ throughout the
campaign; so that at the point of completing the final evaluation you can effortlessly provide a total
figure in response to this question.
We hope you have found this bulletin informative and we anticipate another similar
communication will be sent shortly, prior to commencement of the BCOC campaign to
ensure you are all prepared which will include additional resources such as advice/support to help
deal with difficult conversations.
NHS fraud checking notification
On 1 July 2016, pharmacy contractors will be required by their terms of service, before supplying the
drug or appliance, to advise the person claiming exemption from payment of NHS prescription
charges – where evidence is required but not provided – that NHS checks are routinely
undertaken to verify that such persons are exempt from payment of NHS prescription charges, as
part of arrangements for preventing or detecting fraud or error. It is up to pharmacy teams how this
is done but it must be in “appropriate terms”.
This PSNC Briefing aims to remind community pharmacy teams that this change will be taking
place and includes our tips of key things to consider to make compliance with this new requirement
a matter of routine.
