MAV BAROSS GABOR TRAINING CENTRE
E-learning Workshop at MAV Baross Gabor Training Centre
MAV Baross Gabor Training Centre undertakes to organize the Railway E-learning
Workshop of the Network of European Railway Training Centers. Hereby we present you
with the estimated budget and the new concept of the event.
1. Advantages of the event
E-learning is “trendy” nowadays – its modern, relatively cheap, easy to learn, its market is
getting bigger and bigger, there are several studies to prove its usefulness, every year there are
10-15 conferences about it. The reason behind this enthusiasm is that E-learning is useful –
but the question remains: can it be good for the railways? Can we make it even better, even
more useful for the railways?
Studies and conferences usually forget about railways – while there are several training
materials ready to turn into e-learning, there is not enough computer users. Special methods
are needed to enable railways to really use e-learning’s full potential.
Working together at our workshop the most advanced users of railway e-learning will be able
to create the Study of Best Practices of Railway e-learning. They also will have the
opportunity to try out one another’s e-learning training materials and collect ideas or gather
praises.
2. Sections, methods and principals of the workshop
The participants of the workshop would work in three groups, sections. Each section has a
question (and several sub-questions) to answer. These are the followings:
18th of September, 2007
1

Railway E-learning platforms (What platforms are the best? What should a
good platform be like? What standards should a platform have? etc.)

Railway E-learning Methodology (Tutoring, How to teach with e-learning?,
Teacher competencies? etc.)

Railway E-learning Training Materials (What makes a good e-learning
material? Simulators and e-learning? etc. )
The questions and sub-questions should be worked out in detail together with UIC’s Elearning Club.
Language of the workshop is English. MAV Baross Gabor Training Centre provides FrenchEnglish interpreters and secretaries to every section. The moderators of the sections will be
called upon from the participants before the event.
During the workshop an IT classroom will be used to present the railway related e-learning
materials of the participants.
3. Date of the event
Proposed date of the event: 26-27 of November, 2007.
MAV Baross Gabor Training Centre accepted the task to “organize a workshop in autumn of
2007”. We realized that September is usually the start of the new school/training term, so it’s
not the best date to held an international event – especially there are several e-learning based
event happening in the beginning of autumn (for instance the end of Leonardo NewTr@in
project). During October MAV Baross Gabor Training Centre will celebrate its 120
anniversary, also in Hungary there are several national holidays which make the city hotels
full. For these reasons we suggest the very end of November as the date of the event. With a
Monday and a Tuesday the visitors may have a chance to see the sights of Budapest as well.
4. Location of the event
Location of the event: H-1087 Luther Street 3. Budapest, Hungary, MAV Baross Gabor
Training Centre’s Headquarters.

to all means of public transportation, easy to find for a taxi driver, several adequate hotels and
other places of interest are nearby. Its classrooms and conference rooms are well equipped
(interpreter cabs, microphones, projectors etc.). Weather is usually still good at the end of
November in Hungary, and while it’s before the holiday season special prices are available
from the hotels.
5. Number of participants
We suggest there are no more than 30 participants to ensure the effectiveness of the workshop
(3 sections). Invitations are created by MAV, sent out by UIC. The E-learning Countries
(Spain, Italy, Sweden and Norway etc.) should be invited. MAV has unofficially mentioned
the event to the members of the Network, members of Leonardo’s NewTr@in, and the
participants of this summer UIC Conference in London. We also invited the Romanian
Railway Training Centre. We propose to invite the following railways/ railway training
centres:

Austria

Italy

Croatia

Netherlands

Czech Republic

Norway

France

Spain

Germany

Sweden

Great Britain

Switzerland

Hungary

Romania
To achieve a bigger range of countries we suggest that no more than 2 experts came from one
country.
