Digraph Roll - Really Good Stuff

Digraph Roll
Congratulations on your purchase of Really Good Literacy
Center-in-a-Bag™ Digraph Roll, a hands-on game that
strengthens your students’ word-building and phonics skills.
Objective
Students build words with beginning digraphs.
Meeting State Standards
This type of practice in building words with beginning digraphs
helps students meet grade-level expectations and prepare for
standardized testing. Digraph Roll can also help improve
spelling and phonics skills.
This Really Good Stuff® product includes:
• 3 Dice
• Center Task Card
• This Really Good Stuff® Activity Guide
Digraph Roll reinforces your students’ word-building and
word-recognition skills. Students practice combining beginning
digraphs with common short- and long-vowel phonograms to
make words. Through repeated play, students become proficient
at blending phonemes and building words with beginning digraphs.
Model the Activity
Begin by modeling the activity, discussing every step with
students. Have a copy of the Digraph Roll Game Sheet
Reproducible available to record words as you play. Show the
Dice to your group and explain that the blue Die features
beginning digraphs and the red Dice feature ending phonograms.
Roll the blue Die first and pronounce the sound—for example,
sh. Roll a red Die and pronounce the sound—ip. Blend the
sounds together and say the word aloud with your group—ship.
Record the word on the Game Sheet in the sh column. Ask
students if it’s a real word. If they say yes, circle it. You can also
record as you roll—roll the blue Die, write the digraph in the
correct column, roll the red Die, and add that part to the
digraph. Explain to students that they will play the game with
one to four players and continue taking turns until one player
has 10 real words.
As students become confident at blending the word parts
together, vary the game by adding the other red Die.
• If students do not make a real word on the first try, they try
again by rolling the second red Die.
• After making one real word, students roll the other red Die to
see if they can make another real word with a different ending
phonogram.
Center Task Card
Post this at the literacy center in a visible position. The student
or helper can refer to the Center Task Card for instructions.
Refer to the shaded section at the top of the Card for center
preparation, including needed materials.

Introducing Digraph Roll
Digraph Roll challenges students to build and analyze words
with beginning digraphs. The Dice are color-coded: Blue for
beginning digraphs and red for ending short- and long-vowel
phonograms. The blue digraph Die features ch, sh, th, and wh,
with th and ch each shown twice. The red ending phonogram Dice
have 10 of Wylie and Durrell’s most common phonograms.
Students roll two Dice, one with a beginning digraph and one
with an ending phonogram, and try to make a word. They record
the word, read it aloud, and decide if it’s a real word or not. This
practice prepares students for more complex word-building
activities and helps them become better readers and writers.
