CASTERTON COLLEGE RUTLAND RUTLAND COUNTY COLLEGE POLICY STATEMENT Pupil Premium Formulation date: December 2015 Senior Team Responsibility: CS Reviewed: March 2016 Next Review Date: March 2017 Principles At Casterton College Rutland, all members of staff and Governors accept responsibility for ‘socially disadvantaged’ pupils and are committed to meeting their pastoral, social and academic needs within a caring environment. As with every child in our care, a child who is considered to be ‘socially disadvantaged’ is valued, respected and entitled to develop to his/her full potential, irrespective of their disadvantage. 1 Pupil Premium Statement We are wholly and unequivocally committed to eradicating the gap in performance between disadvantaged students (who have been in receipt of free school meals at any time over the last 6 years) and all other students nationally. Our belief is that a child’s ability is not fixed so we expect disadvantaged children to exceed the progress expected of them by national benchmarks If they do not exceed expected progress we will intervene to ensure they do so We ensure that funds received for this purpose are used solely for doing so and the spending of them is tracked and monitored for its impact on a regular basis We have engaged a team of staff with specifically responsibility for co-ordinating our work on raising the achievement of pupil premium students and they report to the governing body and are held accountable for the impact of their work This year we have received £127,800 for the purpose of raising the achievement of disadvantaged students and this has been spent on a range of strategies which are recorded on the accompanying pupil premium financial report. 2 Pupil Premium Policy Aim To eradicate the effect of socio-economic disadvantage on student performance so that there is no gap between their performance and that of other students Minimum Success Benchmarks The gap between the performance of disadvantaged students (FSM ever and Service children) and other students is smaller than the national average and closing 70% make expected progress and 30% exceed expected progress Attendance of disadvantaged students at Casterton is better than disadvantaged students nationally Aspiration Success Benchmarks The gap between the performance of disadvantaged students (FSM ever) and other students is less than 5%and heading towards zero 90% make expected progress and 50% exceed expected progress Attendance of disadvantaged students is as good as other students Basic Principles 3 We accept that we have a public and moral duty to use pupil premium funds for the purpose of helping disadvantaged students to achieve as well as other students Pupil Premium funds will be used solely for the purpose of supporting pupil premium students to raise their achievement The spending of these funds will be tracked and the effectiveness of that spending will be evaluated and reported to the governing body We will undertake an annual audit of the barriers to learning for our pupil premium students We will construct and maintain a plan for raising the achievement of pupil premium students and monitor this regularly Specific staff will be given particular responsibility for the progress of pupil premium students and will be held to account for the impact they have All staff including teachers and teaching assistants will be expected to take responsibility for the progress of pupil premium students and will be held to account for the impact they have We will monitor the attendance and progress of pupil premium students on a regular basis We will ensure that staff with particular responsibility for the progress pupil premium students make are aware, and maintain a good awareness of, external research into effective approaches to using pupil premium funds We regard the engagement parents as crucial to the success of any strategies designed to raise the achievement of pupil premium students All staff, and especially those with particular responsibility for pupil premium students, will be provided with training to ensure they understand best practice and apply it from an informed perspective Roles and Responsibilities A member of the governing body will act as the pupil premium governor and be responsible for challenging the effectiveness of the work of senior leaders and the pupil premium team in raising the achievement of pupil premium students A senior member of staff will be responsible for leading a pupil premium team consisting of a pupil premium champion and four House Learning Directors The team shall ensure there is a pupil premium plan based on an audit of the barriers to learning for pupil premium students and that both of these are renewed annually The team are responsible for executing the plan and reviewing its effectiveness on a regular basis Performance data on the progress of pupil premium students will be tracked separately to other students and reviewed at least six times a year Teachers follow a pledge known as the Teacher Pledge to identify, apply and monitor the effectiveness of classroom strategies designed to ensure pupil premium students exceed expected progress Teachers will always be aware of the particular needs and progress of all pupil premium students they teach Pupil premium students are expected to exceed expected progress and if they are not, they will be subject to interventions to enable them to do so The attendance and behaviour team in partnership with subject leaders and classroom teachers are responsible for the attendance and behaviour of pupil premium students to ensure that there is no gap between their attendance and behaviour and that of other students Personal tutors are responsible for monitoring the attendance, behaviour and progress of pupil premium students in their group and providing telephone updates for parents at the end of every six week term Reporting, Recording and Monitoring 4 The senior member of staff responsible for our pupil premium strategywill report on the impact of our work with pupil premium students to the pupil premium governor and whole governing body at every full meeting of the governors Governor challenges will be recorded in a separate appendix to the minutes The progress, behaviour and attendance of pupil premium students, as measured against other students and pupil premium students nationally, shall be recorded in the SelfEvaluation Record Card and updated three times a year The pupil premium team will monitor the progress of pupil premium students and the effective application of the pupil premium plan regularly and will report the impact of their work to senior team The pupil premium team will attend the Performance Strategy Team meetings of Senior Team at least twice a term and report on the impact of their work Classroom teachers will assess the progress of pupil premium students and record this centrally at least three times a year 5 Personal tutors will update the parents of pupil premium students on the progress of their children six times a year except in any term where parents have already attended a parent’s evening, academic tutorial or other substantial meeting in school Subject leaders will assess the progress of pupil premium students in their subject and work with their team to identify, monitor and review the impact of the strategies they use to raise the achievement of pupil premium students Subject leaders will be provided with a monthly report on the number of times pupil premium students being taught by teachers in their team have been send to remove (formally removed from the classroom and sent to our unit) and are required to provide an action plan to address areas of concern The attendance of pupil premium students will be reported to the pupil premium team at each meeting A full impact assessment of the pupil premium strategy will be carried out by a member of senior team annually Members of senior team and the pupil premium team will conduct termly learning walks to monitor the progress of pupil premium students in their classrooms and ensure teachers are following best practice
