CAPHIA 2017 PRESIDENT’S AWARD
IMPROVING HEALTH GLOBALLY THROUGH INTERNATIONAL
TEACHING OR RESEARCH COLLABORATIONS
The Award
This year, the President has chosen ‘Improving health globally through international
teaching or research collaborations’ as the theme for the 2017 CAPHIA President’s award.
The global focus of the 2017 award is timely. We are living in an era where increasingly
world leaders, including those in office and aspirants, promote xenophobic worldviews and
agendas. Ideas and people from outside of national borders are portrayed as threats rather
than fellow humans whose cooperation is required to solve many of today’s biggest
challenges. Nowhere is evidence of this is perhaps more pronounced than in the USA where
nationalistic sentiment gathered intensity during the presidential campaign in 2016 and has
culminated with the current President undertaking a number of actions, including the
signing of a range of executive orders including travel bans for individuals from designated
countries and for the ‘building of the wall’ on its southern border with Mexico.
Public health issues, however, transcend national boundaries. To develop the evidence
base to address public health challenges and in doing so improve health, research
academics require a global perspective and global collaborations. To ensure an ongoing
highly skilled global public health workforce, similar international collaborations are valued
in teaching. In the 21st century, research is international and tertiary education delivered in
a global market. Students from many corners of the world are studying at Australian
universities and in increasing numbers. International enrolments into Australian public
health programs reflect this trend. Public health teaching staff are also delivering academic
programs beyond Australian shores. What is consistent irrespective of delivery mode is the
need for academically rigorous programs that truly engage students in their learning and
reflect the contemporary environment. This way, public health professionals will be best
equipped to tackle the public health challenges of the future and in doing so, improve
population health globally.
This award will recognise an individual or team that has made a significant contribution to
improvement in health globally through international teaching or research collaborations.
