PRESS RELEASE
Plastic duck not suitable for game!
(Prague, September 10, 2015) During ordinary monitoring of the market with toys, officers of the
Czech Trade Inspection Authority found out that a product is offered which poses serious risk to
children users. A plastic duck on wheels has several colours and looks safe, but opposite is the truth.
Its movable parts, i.e. wings and wheels, can be easily separated from the body by torsion or pulling
and these small parts can be easily swallowed or inhaled by a child. Therefore sale of this toy was
prohibited and distributor subsequently took action and withdrew the toy from the market. After
complete documentation had been elaborated, the toy was notified into the system of dangerous toys
RAPEX.

Within torsion test a wing that can fit into test tube for small parts was separated from a toy sample
when the power of 0.32 Nm was used (standard’s requirement is 0.34 Nm).

Within pull test, other small parts that can all fit into the test tube for small parts were released. We
speak about the following small parts of the toy: wings (released when the power of 18.8 N and 23.N was
used); after front wheel had been released (75.5 N), the other wheel with axis also separated; rear
wheels were separated after the power of only 75.4 N and 66.7 N were used. The standard’s
requirement is 90±2 N.
Results of the test of the other sample were similar: wings – 7.79 N; front wheel 89.8 N – the other
wheel with axis also separated; rear wheels 79.3 N and 88.6 N.
Within a usual use of the product, i.e. within game, it can be presumed that a situation can occur when a
child can get injured after inhaling or swallowing small parts and hence suffocate or choke. The exposed
end of the metal shafts on which wheels are fixed poses another risk of injury.
The Czech Trade Inspection Authority prohibited sale of the wind-up plastic toy and its distributor
subsequently took action and withdrew the product from the market. After all necessary documentation
had been elaborated, the product was notified into the system RAPEX.
