spring to summer to dos - Team ONE Lacrosse Chicago

Re: College Recruiting Guideline
Team ONE Boys & Girls High School Players & Parents,
We hope that all of the players are having a good start to their high school spring season. Now
that most Spring teams are well underway and into their routines, we wanted to take the time to
reach out to our families to provide some advice to all Team ONE high school players interested
in the recruiting process. The summer season is a prime time college recruiting season, and we
wanted to provide insights on what players and their families should be doing now until the end
of the summer.
Below is a general recruiting guideline which will help keep you organized and on track for the
spring and summer:
Spring Season To Dos:
1. Create a Target List of Schools. Your target list of school should include a total of 10-15
schools, 5 being "Dream Schools," 5 being "Within Reach Schools," and 5 being "Safety
Schools". A great starting point is to search online for the College Lacrosse Rankings for
Division 1 & Division III as a helpful tool to start thinking about your 3 categories (Dream
Schools, Within Reach Schools, and Safety Schools). Please also use this link as another helpful
way to get you thinking about what criteria is important to you. It is a simple guide to help you
begin narrowing down this list.
CRITERIA FOR CREATING TARGET LISTS
2. Accumulate Game Film/Create Highlight Video. A quality highlight tape is a great way to
gain further exposure from an already interested school and/or provide a great first impression
for a school upon initial reach out. Most high school games are filmed, so request the film and
use the Spring as a way to accumulate quality game film. Please remember, the key is to create a
video that showcases your best attributes and keeps the coach wanting more. A good highlight
video should result in a request (i.e. more tape, camp request, a visit, etc.). Coaches do not give
out scholarships based on a highlight video, BUT THEY CAN DECIDE NOT TO! Click this

3. Start Reaching Out to Coaches. College lacrosse is in season right now and coaches are
busy, but that shouldn't deter you from sending an initial reach out. The goal of the first reach
out is genuinely show your interest in the school/program, hype yourself up, and let college
coaches know where you will be this summer. (If you already have a highlight video created,
add the link to the highlight video in the email). Most likely the only type of response you will
receive will be a camp brochure, but at the very least, you know that you are now in their
database and they have gotten your email. The follow up will come as you get closer to the
summer. Please see below for a template/sample email:

4. Set up Meetings w/ Team ONE Directors. From now until the beginning of the summer
season, your Team ONE Directors are here and willing to meet to discuss your lists of schools
and provide any valuable insights as we can. It is your responsibility to reach out; please do so!
5. Check the Tournament Websites. Check the tournament websites as the summer draws
closer in order to see what coaches are confirmed to attend the event.
Summer Season To Dos:
1. Follow Up Emails/Include Game Schedules. 1-2 weeks out of each summer tournament,
you should be sending out follow up emails to your target lists. Please include your full game
schedule, jersey number, contact information, and highlight video link. Coaches will come
watch if you send this email! Make it very clear who you are and where you will be!
2. Thank You Letters. Follow up after the event with a simple HANDWRITTEN thank you
letter. "Thank you coach for taking the time to come out and watch my game at "President's
Cup." Hope to hear from you soon!
3. Attend a University Camp: We recommend attending a university camp in the summer.
Try and attend a school that has shown some interest and that is in the "Within Reach" category.
Attending the #1 college in the nation's camp is cool, but if they aren't interested, in our opinion
the cost isn't worth flying/attending their camp. Prior to the camp, shoot them an email letting
them know you are coming, and make sure you are respectful, mature, and meet the players on
the team. The players work most of these camps, and if you can make friends with the players,
that is a good step in the right direction!
4. Update Game Footage. If you had some great moments at the summer events, make sure
you update your highlight video, because the Fall season is also a very important recruiting
season.
All the above links and more can be found on the Team ONE Boys & Girls Home Pages as well
on the left hand tab labeled, "Recruiting Information."
Team ONE is here to be a resource throughout the recruiting process, but the job falls primarily
on the families. Please be persistent and do your diligence. Team ONE is here to help, so ask
questions and all players interested in the recruiting process should reach out to the Team ONE
Directors to meet prior to the summer season. When meeting with the Team ONE Directors
please come prepared with you target lists of schools!!!
Best of luck to everyone in the remainder of their high school seasons. Looking forward to a
great summer!
Thank you and Go Team ONE!
