Polyvivor
In order to fully appreciate ‘Polyvivor’ it is important that participants first completed ‘Welcome
to My World’.
“Polyvivor” is based on the popular TV programmes “Survivor” and “The Amazing
Race”.
It is a fun and interactive way of unpacking the Pasifika Education Plan (PEP), 20132017, the Government’s strategy for raising Pasifika student achievement.
In teams, you must search through the PEP for the answers to take you to the next
stage. But tread carefully, lest you stumble across a “ROADBLOCK”, or must make a
“DETOUR”.
Out-wit, out-play, and out-think the other teams to be the first to complete all stages and

Autism-Friendly Schools, Homes and Communities:
Strategies for dealing with Autism and Asperger's Syndrome
There are a number of children identified with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) worldwide. While
there is no cure for ASD, several research studies have produced substantial evidence that early
identification and intensive intervention can result in dramatic progress.
On the other hand, lack of ‘autism awareness’ among school personnel and significant others in the
community can be a major barrier to achieving the expected progress for a student with autism. Poor
understanding of the impact of specific impairments and skill deficits of autism can be a major
stumbling block in providing an inclusive education for students with ASD.
Participants will be encouraged to discuss/brainstorm strategies to enhance an ‘autism friendly
climate/atmosphere’ in our local schools, homes and in our local communities. Participants are to
come to the course with some ideas of “Autism –friendly” approaches.
The course participants will be able to:
 give a basic overview of some of the specific impairments/skill deficits in ASD
 identify some of the basic behavioural characteristics of autism
 explain why students with Asperger’s syndrome might be bullied by class/school mates
 develop an understanding of the social skills deficits experienced by students on the spectrum
 develop an understanding of the utility of visual supports and schedules for individuals with ASD
in school and at home.

increase their knowledge regarding the following strategies:
 classroom and playground strategies, managing transition difficulties, dealing with
challenging behaviours, dealing with ‘insistence on sameness’, function-based interventions,
enhancing motivation for learning, social story interventions, priming, choice-making,
functional communication training, discrete trial training (DTT), use of assistive technology,
and video modelling.

Social and Emotional Skills Training for Children
and Teens
Most students quickly acquire the basic social and emotional skills during their primary school
years. The social skills learned/acquired during primary school years can also be a crucial asset
later in adult life. These skills allow them to meet and greet, have friendships, and deal with
conflict; but for some other students acquiring these skills can be difficult.
Research has shown that social and emotional training can be very effective. Early identification
of these difficulties is crucial. In some children such difficulties can be glaringly obvious in their
day-to-day interactions thus difficult to ignore. In some other students these social skill
difficulties are very subtle and can be overlooked or misidentified as shyness, rudeness, anger,
poor parenting, naughty behaviour or even giftedness.
The course participants will be able to:
 give an overview of basic social and emotional skills
 describe some of the methods to identify social and emotional challenges in the school
setting
 describe the use of a socio-gram to understand social dynamics and peer interaction patterns
 describe the importance of non-verbal communication, social initiation, and social
reciprocity.
 increase their knowledge regarding the following strategies:
 social skills training, social story, circle of friends, semi-structured peer interaction
activities, modelling, video modelling
 describe some of probable reasons on why some students experience unstructured play to be
more challenging than supervised games/play activities.

Managing a Traumatic Incident
Setting up a Traumatic Incident Team and Developing a
Traumatic Incident Response Plan
A Course for School and ECE Service Managers
A Traumatic Incident can affect any school or ECE service. All ECE services and
schools need to be prepared and know how to manage a traumatic incident before it
occurs.
This means all ECE services and schools need to develop a policy, plan or set of
procedures covering the management of a traumatic incident.
The course will consider:

setting up a traumatic incident team

developing a traumatic incident response plan

clarifying roles and responsibilities of members of the traumatic incident
team.

Writing Assistive Technology (AT)
Applications Workshop
This workshop will enable participants to apply to the Ministry of Education for
appropriate assistive technology for student(s) with disabilities. The workshop will have
participants draft assistive technology application(s) that supplemented with some
additional information should ensure assistive technology for the student (provided they
are eligible). This is a practical workshop and learning will occur through doing and
reflecting (rather than predominantly through listening).
During the morning, as well as writing up at least one assistive technology application
we will cover the basics of:

Assessing whether assistive technology should be trialled

Decide what assistive technology to trial.

Obtaining the technology.

Setting up a trial with the appropriate level of support.

Gathering and interpreting the trial data.

We will also look at what the moderators (AT Coordinators) are looking for in
applications.
Ideally bring a computer loaded with the latest assistive technology application form
(available by Googling assistive technology forms and going to the website link).
Participants in this course should come away familiar with the assistive technology
application process and assistive technology applications for which they have checked
off all the boxes!

INCLUSIVE PRACTICES DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME
Running in Terms 2 and 3 2015
The new NZCER Inclusive Practices Tools are designed to help self review your school’s
current inclusive practices and to reflect on and develop a plan to further strengthen
practices. The tools enable you to consult widely with your whole school community and to
gather data to inform your review.
Our programme will guide you step by step through this process using the NZCER
tools.
The programme features:

Four, 2½ hour, group workshop modules to unpack the tools and other resources and
support you to plan each stage of your review.

Carefully paced modules to allow you time to use the free and confidential NZCER
Inclusive Practices Tools in your school during the programme.

A comprehensive workbook and other resources for each participant.

Individualised support and follow up for participants between sessions as you move
through your review process.

An opportunity to work with other schools as part of a professional learning community.
What’s required for a school to be involved?
Two or three ‘school champions’, whose roles enable them to lead this process, attend the
workshops and lead the self-review. Schools who have participated in the programme in 2014
found it highly desirable to have the Principal as one of these ‘champions’. Participants have
included DP, AP, SENCO and BOT members.
At the end of the process schools will have developed their own Inclusive Education Action
Plan. The will embed plans within the school’s main planning and reporting documents.
Schools will be supported to access the resources and supports to implement their plans.
Between, workshops facilitators provide regular support to participants to help identify and
address challenges and barriers at each stage of the Inclusive Practice Tools.
Free and with a maximum of 12 schools in each of the four locations

programme (PB4L).
We are seeking expressions of interest to attend these courses from early childhood services and
schools/kura. If you are interested please complete the attached form.
Programme Details:

The IY teacher training programme is targeted at teachers working with children who are
aged 3 - 8 years old. Ideally there should be a minimum of two teachers enrolled in the
training from your EC service/school/kura for the programme to be most effective.
Time Commitment:

Teachers attend six one day sessions held over six months, and a follow-up one-day
workshop three months after completion of the programme.
Financial Supports/Costs:


Each EC centre/school/kura will be paid $1000.00 per teacher attending the first 6
workshops. This is paid after session 2 and the expectation is for full attendance of the next
four workshops. The Ministry of Education will reserve the right to seek a refund if teachers
do not attend the remaining four workshops without valid reason.
Your EC centre/school/kura will need to fund the follow-up day (Follow-up Workshop 7).
