Munster Industrial Advocate Vol. 100 (Reg. in GPO as a Newspaper) TEL: 058 41205 / 42042 Sports www.dungarvanobserver.ie €1.70 Wednesday, 4 April, 2012 DUNGARVAN OBSERVER SPORTS SUPPLEMENT DAVIDSON, NC – Seamus Power of West Waterford, Ireland entered the final round of the eGolf Tour’s River Run Classic with a three-shot lead following rounds of 64-66—130 to start his week. On a picture perfect day just north of Charlotte, NC, Power made good on his vast potential with a final-round 70 to post a three-day total of 16-under 200 and capture his first eGolf Tour title, as well as the $15,000 first-place prize. The River Run Classic is the fifth of 24 scheduled events on the 2012 eGolf Tour schedule, and is being contested this week at River Run Country Club in Davidson, NC. The event is the first of 10 scheduled 54hole events on the tour’s 2012 schedule. Entering Friday’s final round, Power was in sole possession of the lead at 14-under par, three shots clear of Canadian Cam Burke, and five shots ahead of Kevin Foley of Somerville, NJ. Early on in the final round, it looked as though Burke might try and steal Power’s thunder. Birdies at Nos. 1 and 2 moved Burke to 13-under, while a birdie-bogey stretch on Nos. 2 and 3 by Power closed the gap to just one shot with 15 holes to play. When he birdied the first two holes, it kind of became a two-horse race,” said Power, 25. “To be honest, that kind of relaxed me a bit as there were fewer players to worry about out there. It was really just me and Cam.” Power birdied the par-4 fifth to move back to 15-under, but a three-putt bogey at the ninth left him at even-par for the day and at 14-under, where he began the round. Meanwhile, Burke hit an eight-hole string of pars that did little to threaten Power’s title chances. The par streak came to an end with a bogey at the par-4 11th, and when Power added a birdie at the par-5 12th, the lead was back up to three shots. I made a good 8-foot par putt at 10, and when I birdied 12, that gave me a good cushion again at three shots,” Power said. “After that, I birdied 13 to get to 16-under and four ahead. From there, I just wanted to get to No. 18 – I wasn’t going to let up until I did.” The birdie at 13 gave way to pars at 14, 15 and 16 by both Power and Burke. Power bogeyed the tough par-3 17th to fall to 15-under, but with a three-shot lead in tow, the former East Tennessee State golfer had more than enough room to play the 18th with the demeanour of a champion. A closing eagle by Burke was icing on the runner-up cake, but did little to diminish a closing birdie by Power, who finished with a final-round 70 and a 16-under total, good for a two-shot victory. “This win is great for me,” said Power, who moved up to No. 7 on the tour’s money list with earnings of $20,893. “The money obviously helps, but more importantly, it moves me further up the money list where I can hopefully get Q-School paid for by finishing in the top 20. That was one of my goals this year, so this helps a lot.” The win for Power was foreshadowed a bit by good early-round play at last week’s Irish Creek Classic. Rounds of 62-70 gave him the tournament’s 18- and 36-hole leads, but closing rounds of 73-72 left him T22 on the week. Regardless, that experience paid dividends at River Run, where Power played like a seasoned veteran chasing win No. 10, not win No. 1. “I consider myself to be a fast learner, and I learned a lot from last week,” he said. “I started trying to force some putts at Irish Creek, and did a poor job of just letting things happen. This week, I just tried to stay in the present and let it happen as opposed to forcing the issue.” With the victory, Power was awarded a one-year, full membership to River Run Country Club, as part of a promotion put together by the club’s members. Power’s membership will include full access to the golf course and practice facilities, as well as the swim and tennis facilities, and the club’s member dining room. “It’s fantastic. I live about 10 minutes from here, and can’t wait to come out and use the facility as a member,” said Power. “Just to be able to come out here and putt on some of the best greens around is huge. Add to that the full membership, and it’s a fantastic situation.” DISAPPOINTING DEFEAT FOR WATERFORD page 2 Final Round 70 gives Seamus Power first eGolf Tour title at the River Run Classic WATERFORD COPPER-FASTEN DIV. 1A LEAGUE STATUS BRICKEY RANGERS LIFT WEST U-21B FOOTBALL TITLE page 3 page 4 2 GAA Dungarvan Observer Sports | Wednesday, 4 April, 2012 Allianz National Football League … Disappointing defeat for Waterford Waterford ........................... 0-12; Carlow ..................................1-15. FOLLOWING this disappointing defeat to Luke Dempsey’s Carlow side on Saturday night in the Fraher Field, Waterford will once again compete in Division Four of the league in 2013. Following on from their excellent victory over Limerick last week, hopes were high that John Owens’ side could win their remaining games to give themselves an outside chance of promotion to Division 3. However, on the night, Waterford were somewhat flat and they could not manage to negate the influence of the excellent Brendan Murphy who put in a marvellous performance at midfield. Also, once again, Waterford were far too dependant on Gary Hurney for scores as he accounted for 0-8 of Waterford’s total with Patrick Hurney, Sean O’Hare and Tony Grey sharing the remainder between them. Carlow on the other hand had seven players on the scoresheet with the scoring shared almost evenly between them. It was the home side who opened the scoring through Gary Hurney with a point in the fourth minute, but with Brendan Murphy dominating the midfield exchanges it was Carlow who led at the break, 0-6 to 0-5 with good points from the like of Brian Murphy and J. J. Smith. John Owens introduced Sean Dempsey, Tadgh O hUallachain and Conor McGrath at half-time to try and reverse the trend but it was Carlow who opened best and three quick points saw them lead by four points after nine minutes of the half. Waterford did manage to keep in touch for the next 20 minutes but it was fitting that the outstanding Murphy put the issue beyond any doubt with seven minutes to play as he finished off a great team move for goal to give his side a commanding lead which they weren’t going to surrender in the remaining minutes as they won 1-15 to 0-12. Allianz National Football League … Footballers make long journey to play Leitrim Sunday, 8th April At Carrick-on-Shannon Waterford -vLeitrim at 2.30 p.m. WATERFORD senior footballers are back in Allianz National League Division IV action on Sunday afternoon next when they make the long journey westwards to lovely Leitrim to play the home county in their seventh outing in the National League. To date they have been playing much better away from home as evidenced by two great results firstly against Wicklow in Aughrim and then against Limerick at Pairc na nGael on the Ennis Road. So can John Owens’ charges now playing for pride alone make it three wins on the trot away from home? It’s most certainly a big ask for the Deise men. One wonders could we see either Liam O Lionain or Conor McGrath back in action on Sunday next. Waterford will be without the services of Gary Hurney for both the Leitrim and London games and they must now utilise both of these league fixtures as preparation for their Munster championship clash with Limerick on the 20th May next. Limerick who drew with Fermanagh last week suffered a set-back when midfielder John Galvin had to retire injured. Waterford will travel up on Saturday to Carrick-on-Shannon and as already stated they must utilise Sunday’s encounter and the London game in their build-up towards that Munster championship showdown against the Shannonsiders. Also two rounds of the county senior football championship will be staged on the weekend of 20th, 21st and 22nd April and 27th, 28th and 29th April, thus plenty of football to be played over the coming weeks. So let’s hope for a good result at the Carrick-on-Shannon venue on Sunday next. Munster U-21 Football Championship Semi-Final Emphatic win for Kerry Kerry .................................... 4-26; Waterford ............................. 1-4. KERRY kept their foot on the pedal at Austin Stack Park in Tralee on Wednesday night as the Kingdom side dished out a 31 point thrashing to a hapless Waterford outfit to advance to a Munster final showdown with arch rivals and defending champions Cork who for their part duly accounted for Clare on a scoreline of 3-15 to 1-6. Kerry were totally dominant from the throw-in to lead by 0-5 to 0-1 at the end of the opening quarter with Deise keeper Eamon Cahill denying the home side on no less than three occasions as he affected a series of top class saves. However, the Kingdom’s non-stop pressure eventually told as Ian Galvin, Conor Cox, Kieran Hurley and Stephen O’Brien all raised green flags and the home side went in at the interval leading by 4-12 to 0-2. On the turnover, Kerry perhaps pulled back a little on the throttle as they added a total of 0-14 and appeared to concentrate on raising white flags before Portlaw’s Blake O’Connor’s added a late consolation goal who with Matthew Scurry was Waterford’s best player. [Sean Byrne//Deise Sport] County U-21 A Football Final Sunday, 8th April At Walsh Park Roanmore -vBallinacourty at 3.30 p.m. ON Sunday afternoon next the County Board stages its U-21 (A) football final at Walsh Park when newly crowned Western champions Ballinacourty face the real surprise packet of this year’s championship namely Roanmore who shocked defending Eastern and county champions Rathgormack in the Divisional semi-final on a scoreline of 0-12 to 1-8. Then, in the Eastern final Roanmore again came up trumps when they put in a storming finish to overcome a fancied De La Salle outfit who were back-boned by the majority of the team which lifted the county minor (A) title in 2010 on a scoreline of 0-13 to 1-5. Roanmore are a physically strong and well prepared outfit who will be confident of winning here playing so to speak in their own backyard. Keith Finn will again guard their net fronted Chris Dempsey, Daniel Duggan, Tim O’Byrne with the outstanding Mickey Merrigan and Seamus Burns being the key players in their half backline backed up by Damien Thomas at centrefield; Stephen Flynn and Emmet O’Toole are likely to again team up. While if Shane Nolan who scored 0-7 against De La Salle is their ace in the pack up front twin brother Brian Nolan, Eoin Maddigan, David Phelan, Cein Chester and Dale Sheridan will lend solid support. Ballinacourty have three championship outings to date. Firstly, overcoming old rivals Clashmore/Kinsalebeg after a most exciting game on a scoreline of 1-10 to 2-5 in a close run affair in which the issue hung in the balance right up to the final whistle. Then in the semi-final the final scoreline of 5-9 to 1-9 did less than justice to a youthful Nire XV. Next up three days later was a local derby clash with Dungarvan in the Western final which didn’t disappoint as the issue swung this way and that ending all square at 0-10 each. Thus, extra time came into play which saw ‘Courty finally getting on top to run out winners on a final score of 1-16 to 0-11. The Western champions line up should see Philip Cashin again guarding their net with Barry McCullagh, Brian Looby, Diarmuid Henley, Damien Dee, Conor Hickey, Maurice Power, Nicky Dee and David Morrissey in contention in defence. Michael O’Halloran and Ronan Sheehan are their regular midfield pairing. While up front John Power, Evan Collins, David Collins, Shane Crotty, Shane O’Donovan, Colm Kindregan and Adam Keane will be their options. Of course, they will be short the Michael O’Halloran services of Jack Lacey who was injured in that terrible road accident and best wishes for a speedy recovery are extended to this most popular young sportsman who as well as being a fine hurler/footballer is an international golfer with Ireland. Roanmore will provide a really searching test here and having overcome both Rathgormack and De La Salle will be quietly confident of lifting the title. Ballinacourty are improving from game to game and if they can maintain that level of improvement then they can match their city opponents here. Dungarvan Observer Sports | Wednesday, 4 April, 2012 GAA 3 Waterford copper-fasten Division 1A League Status Waterford ........................... 0-17; Dublin .................................. 0-13. A REALLY well focused Waterford team recorded a fully deserved four point victory over Dublin at Dungarvan’s Fraher Field on Sunday afternoon to ensure that our county retains its Division 1A status into the 2013 Allianz League. Waterford laid the foundation for their victory by virtue of a very competent opening half performance in which every player played his part to the full with a really good level of work-rate evidenced throughout the pitch allied to delivery in fast direct ball to their forwards. No doubt Dublin who knew in advance that they would be participating in the special relegation game on Sunday, 15th April next and who made a number of changes in their line-out still went out to win here. Yet, they were not in the same position as Waterford as it was not a do or die encounter for the defending league champions who were well and truly outplayed in that opening half. In fairness the Dubs improved in the second half when if anything Waterford for a period were unable to maintain their high levels of work-rate. Nevertheless, they did the business here which is what matters. WATERFORD IN CONTROL Waterford were well in control of the first half exchanges and were in no way flattered by their eight point lead at the interval. The outstanding feature of that period was the form displayed by Roanmore starlet Gavin O’Brien as the 2011 county minor captain really turned on the style to score 0-4 from play. In particular, one of those points in the 22nd minute was spectacular. His first touch control was splendid as he controlled the ball from a Tony Browne pass and flashed it over the bar and most certainly Michael Ryan and company deserve full credit for the manner in which they are bringing him along. Maurice Shanahan opened Waterford’s account in the 2nd minute set up by Gavin O’Brien with D. O’Callaghan converting a free in the 3rd minute. Kevin Moran was fouled at centrefield with Pauric Mahony duly converting the resultant free. Veteran Tony Browne then landed one of his trademark points from the half backline. Now, it was Maurice Shanahan who set up Gavin O’Brien for his second point and the Lismore stalwart then chipped in with his sixth point and Eoin McGrath put Gavin O’Brien in for his third point in the 17th minute to edge Waterford into a very solid six point lead, 0-7 to 0-1. Eamon Dillon (0-2) replied for the Dubs. Yet, Gavin O’Brien and Pauric Mahony replied for the Deise before David Treacy had Dublin’s 4th and last point of the opening half in the 23rd minute. Maurice Shanahan found John Mullane who pointed. Pauric Mahony was again on target from a free in the 32nd minute and fittingly it was young Gavin O’Brien who had the final say as he flashed over his fourth point in the 35th minute to send the Deise men in leading by a very comfortable margin of eight points at the interval, 0-12 to 0-4. WATERFORD STAY IN FRONT On the turnover, Maurice Shanahan set up 2011 Waterford hurler of the year Kevin Moran for a fine point and the De La Salle player showed here that centrefield is possibly his best position where fellow clubman Dean Twomey also faired quite well and remains as a player who will be pushing for a starting place, 0-13 to 0-4. Dublin then scored four successive points between the 44th and 51st minutes per David McMurrow, Ross O’Carroll, David Treacey (free) and John McCaffery (free), 0-13 to 0-8. Good work by Gavin O’Brien earned a free which Maurice Shanahan duly converted in the 52nd minute, 0-14 to 0-8. Earlier Liam Lawlor who was playing very well at full back went off injured; it appeared to be a leg injury and hopefully the Fourmilewater defender who has really made that number 3 jersey his own will make a speedy recovery. Eoin McGrath who had been buzzing around and working very hard shipped a heavy tackle and Dublin player Dean Curran was shown a second yellow card and thus reducing the visitors to 14 players for the final 15 minutes of action here. David Treacy (free) and Eoin Dillon landed points for the visitors before John Mullane received a big ovation when he landed a great point in the 6th minute as Martin O’Neill came in for Eoin McGrath and Eoin Kelly replaced Shane Walsh. The Passage player was immediately put in possession per a Dean Twomey pass and responded with a glorious point from out on the sideline to prove his worth in no uncertain terms. Maurice Shanahan tacked on Waterford’s final point from a free in the 65th minute, 0-17 to 0-10 and the Lismore man gave another excellent display here and has now really copper-fastened his place in the team and is a player of considerable promise. Dublin to their credit kept plugging away and were rewarded with further points per Danny S. O’Keeffe, Ross O’Carroll and Ryan O’Dwyer, 0-17 to 0-13 by the 71st minute when David O’Sullivan replaced Dean Twomey. Adrian Power showed here that he is a top-class keeper who will challenge very strongly for the number one jersey for the Munster Championship. While, Aiden Kearney showed flashes of his best form and remains a fine corner back where Ballygunner’s Philip Mahony is settling in quite well. Young at heart Tony Browne had a good outing, while Michael ‘Brick’ Walsh held the centre well with Shane O’Sullivan having a good outing at left half back. John Mullane who is the leading scorer over recent years again utilised his vast experience to telling affect and his return to the colours had been a huge boost for the team and Shane Walsh worked very hard to again show that he is one of our best forwards. While Pauric Mahony’s free-taking was again first rate and Stephen Daniels, Stephen Molumphy, Martin O’Neill, Eoin Kelly and David O’Sullivan all came in to shine in a very important victory for our county. DUE CREDIT Due credit to Waterford’s new management set-up of Michael Ryan, Ken McGrath and Sean Cullinane who had their charges well focused for last Sunday’s test and they got the result which they deserved and in post match interviews both Michael Ryan and Sean Cullinane emphasised that with 10 weeks to go to their Munster championship semi-final that all the emphasise will now be in that crucial showdown with Clare who are going well in Division 1B in which they will play Limerick for the promotion and semi-final spots. A minute’s silence was observed before the commencement of the game as a mark of respect to the late Mary Enright. SCORERS AND TEAMS Scorers: Waterford: M. Shanahan, G. A TWO goal strike inside 3 minutes by corner forward Laurance Houlihan provided Brickey Rangers with the launching pad to land the Western U-21 (B) football title at the Fraher Field under floodlights on Friday night last over a gallant Comeragh Gaels side. The teams had exchanged early points as Patrick Walsh (2nd minute) and Conor Walsh (7th minute) were on target from frees. Then two brilliant saves by keeper Dean McKenna in the 7th minute denied Brickeys goals. In the 13th minute Laurance Houlihan again was the main man and he speed down the wing to crash the ball to the net in the 15th minute to open up a six point lead, 2-1 to 0-1. Now it was the turn of Brickey custodian Sam Keohan to shine as he saved a pile-driver from Kevin Sheehan. Comeragh Gaels who has been the slightly fancied team here now enjoyed a good spell as Patrick (Pa) Walsh converted a ‘45 and a free. Christopher Murphy pointed from play in reply and at the interval break Brickey Rangers were five points to the good, 2-2 to 0-5. On the turnover, Conor Walsh pointed for Brickeys before Pa Walsh (0-2) from frees and Kevin Sheehan from play left just a goal between the sides at 2-3 to 0-6. Michael Barry raised the white flag for Rangers, 2-4 to 0-6 at the end of the 3rd quarter. Pa Walsh was again on target from a 50th minute free. Conor Walsh had Brickey’s final score, a point in the 55th minute, 2-5 to 0-7. Comeragh Gaels added a point in time added on per Dermot Tobin and then laid siege on Ranger’s citadel but were unable to get for a goal which would have ensured that extra time would be required. Jack Lacey, a very valued member of the local club (who is also an international U-18 golfer with Ireland) back to College in Limerick after a MFC game against St. Patrick’s when the tragic accident occurred in which the driver of the other care Robert Stoker also lost his life. Pa Enright along with his brothers Eoin and Stephen has shared in numerous championship successes thus, maintaining the proud record of service of the Enright family to the Abbeyside/Ballinacourty club stretching back to the late nineteen forties and is son of former club and county star Liam ‘Doc’ Enright. Mary Enright was deeply involved with the Abbeyside ladies and county footballers as a player, coach and leading administrator and both were carrying out a regular task for all GAA clubs and Mary’s untimely passing has left a deep void within the local club. Mary’s father David Walsh has proved his worth as a fundraiser for the local club and is widely known throughout GAA circles within our county. The passing of Tommy Mooney who was in his eighties evoked much sadness in the GAA circles especially within his beloved Kill club to which he had devoted a life-time of service. Firstly, as a very good Gaelic footballer before an injury cut short his playing career, he then served on their club committee in various administrative roles inclusive of a 14 year stint as club chairman. He was an outstanding fundraiser and also served as a most dedicated groundsman right down to lining their pitch accurately. Tommy was self employed in the haulage business and travelled all over Ireland. He served as Vice Chairman of the Eastern Board and as a Kill club delegate to the County Board. He truly loved the game of Gaelic football and served as a county senior football selector for many years and also as a Railway Cup selector. Tommy Mooney was a loyal GAA man as you would meet in many a long day and was quite rightly regarded as a legend within the Kill club. Division I(A) status retained WATERFORD senior hurlers and their new management team did the business on Sunday last to the delight of their supporters in the 5,000 plus attendance by overcoming Dublin at the Fraher Field by 0-17 to 0-13, thus, ensuring that Division I (A) status is retained for the 2013 league, if, of course, the formation remained as is. It was a truly crucial game which Waterford had to win in order to avoid being involved in a relegation play-off encounter on the 15th April next. In that respect it’s the result that mattered as they built on their win over Galway the previous week and accordingly, did the business. It has to be recognised that the players work-rate and application to the task on hands has been much improved in both the Galway and Dublin games compared with their performances against Cork, Kilkenny and Tipperary. Waterford will now really begin their 10 week build-up towards that Munster semi-final clash with Clare at Semple Stadium on June 17th next. Two rounds of the county senior hurling championship will be staged on the weekends of 4th, 5th and 6th May and 12th and 13th May which will also help to sharpen up their hurling skills. Of course, it’s well to note that this wasn’t a ‘do or die’ encounter for Anthony Daly’s re-arranged XV who nevertheless shot a grand total of 18 wides. They will field out their strongest team possible for that crucial relegation play-off encounter with Galway on Sunday, 15th April next. What of Galway? Well, in truth their game with Kilkenny at Nowlan Park on Sunday last was ‘akin to boys against men’ as they were on the receiving end of a backlash from a Kilkenny side still smarting from that defeat by Cork the previous week. The 5 T.M. All-Ireland champions dished out a 25 point drubbing to the Tribesmen who, of course, are still short the services of Joe Canning. Kilkenny for their part were without ace attackers Henry Shefflin and Richie Power. They will now play the winners of the Division I (B) final between Clare and Limerick in the league semi-final. No doubt the Waterford management will be keeping a watching brief on that Clare/Limerick clash which goes ahead at the Gaelic Grounds next weekend. Meanwhile, up in Thurles, Tipperary and Cork played out a most exciting drawn encounter at 1-23 all, a fact which should ensure that their semi-final clash on the 22nd April next should attract a fine attendance. Those two league semi-finals should provide an excellent build-up to the actual league final and help to profile the game of hurling. Allianz National Football League THE news coming from Dungarvan’s Fraher Field on Saturday night last was most disappointing as victory deservingly went to Luke Dempsey’s, Carlow who came out on a scoreline of 1-15 to 0-12. It was a result that effectively put paid to any slim hopes that Waterford had of staying in the hunt for promotion from Division IV back up to Division III. A 63rd minute Carlow goal decided the issue as Waterford were reduced to 14 players in time added on when Gary Hurney was sent off. Having recorded very good results away from home against Wicklow and Limerick it makes last Saturday night’s result all the more difficult to comprehend. This coming weekend, Waterford make the long journey up to Leitrim where John Owens’ charges recorded a great win in one of their first Allianz League fixtures. Leitrim playing at home will be confident of winning on Sunday next. However, to date Waterford’s away form has been very good and who knows maybe the Deise men will record their third successive away victory. Sixth title for Crossmaglen Rangers CROSSMAGLEN Rangers swept to a comprehensive fifteen point victory over Garrycastle, 2-19 to 1-7 in last Saturday’s AIB All-Ireland football final replay at Kingspan Breffni Park as the Armagh champions delivered a master class in direct no nonsense championship football. In the process they garnered their sixth All-Ireland club title just one adrift of Cork’s Nemo Rangers with former Armagh AllIreland star attacker Oisin McConville winning his sixth All-Ireland club medal which subject to correction is a record. It’s worth mentioning that in truth there was little or no proper marketing of this All-Ireland club final replay and one has to pose the question as to why this occurred. Nevertheless, the attendance of was reasonably good for a Saturday evening fixture played in a nice sized stadium which is a credit to the Cavan County Board. Garrycastle had a great chance in the drawn encounter on St. Patrick’s Day, but they were outclassed on Saturday evening last by one of the club teams that we have seen in this really excellent competition. Munster U-21 Football Championship THERE was no joy whatsoever for Waterford U-21 footballers at Austin Stack Park in Tralee on Wednesday night last as Kerry turned in what team manager Eamon Fitzmaurice stated was all about getting the result and having a professional performance. Our lads were well turned in and well focused indeed. Firstly, it has to be clearly emphasised that the Waterford U-21 selectors were on a hiding to nothing as several good players quite simply did not make themselves available for selection which seems a great pity and then, of course, all the emphasise at minor and U-21 level appears to be on hurling. February Park Hotel Sportstar Award. Pierce Flynn, Park Hotel presents the February Sportstar Award to Kieran Power, Captain of the Coláistí Na nDéise Harty Cup winning Team. Included are Shane McGrath and Darragh Duggan, Team Mentors; Peter Power, Coach; Imelda Walsh, Sales & Marketing Manager, Park Hotel; Fr. Pat Moran, Kieran O'Connor and John A. Murphy, Adjudicators and some team members. [Sean Byrne//Deise Media] Then Kerry had the considerable benefit of a really serious championship work-out against quite a good Tipperary XV and if we are being honest about it there was a good deal of apprehension in footballing circles as to the outcome of last Wednesday night’s game. If Waterford are to make any real impression in this important grade then the best players in our county have to come on board and that is inclusive of dual players. It’s a policy that the County Board should ensure that operates in the minor and U-21 grades. Galway Debt AS carried in the National media last week the Galway County Board’s debt amounted to a massive €5 million plus. This was made up of an outstanding debt of €1.25 in respect of the redevelopment of Pearse Stadium in Salthill and approximately €800,000 on a football training centre at Loughgeorge which has been in operation for several years. It was pointed out that these two projects are well in hand and the loans re same are being repaid as normal. Galway’s more serious financial problem lies with their proposed hurling centre in Mountain South near Athenry where they purchased more than 100 acres of land at the height of the so called Celtic Tiger period. They paid out a total of €2.8 million for the site where they had planned to develop a state-of-the-art training complex worth €8 million. They had since paid €535,000 towards the project, the majority which has been on bank interest. A decision was taken before Christmas to abandon the project. Recently, GAA President Christy Cooney and Director General Padraig Duffy met Galway County Board officers to draw up a plan to deal with the debt. Croke Park will offer assistance but it will be up to the Galway County Board to come up with a solution to the huge debt. County U-21 Football Finals ON Sunday afternoon next the County Board stages its U-21 football finals at Walsh Park when local clubs Brickey Rangers and Abbeyside/Ballinacourty will travel down the N25 to face strong opposition in both deciders at the city venue. In the U-21 (B) county final ‘Clan na nGael’, the combined forces of the Butlerstown, Dunhill and Fenor clubs who swept all before them in the Eastern championship will go in as slight favourites to overcome Brickey Rangers. Yet, the Carriglea based club certainly upset the form book in last Friday night’s Western Final played under floodlights at the Fraher Field where they defeated Comeragh Gaels by 2-5 to 0-8. In the Grade (A) U-21 county final Roanmore who have defeated county champions Rathgormack and a highly rated De La Salle side will be determined to go all the way playing at their favourite venue. Ballinacourty have overcome Clashmore/Kinsalebeg, Nire and Dungarvan after extra time enroute to Sunday’s county final. All involved in the local club have come through a traumatic period as a result of the tragic death of Mary Enright and the injuries sustained by Patrick Enright and Jack Lacey travelling to Limerick after a MFC game last week. They resumed training this week and just like Brickeys will enjoy strong support. 2011 County Awards Presented AT half-time at the Fraher Field on Sunday afternoon last the County Board’s for 2011 were presented as follows: Hurler of the Year - Kevin Moran (De La Salle). Footballer of the Year - Shane Briggs (Ballinacourty). Underage Hurler of the Year - Jamie Barron (Fourmilewater). Underage Footballer of the Year - Ray O Ceallaigh (An Gaeltacht). Club of the Year - Dungarvan. Special Category Club - Sliabh gCua/St. Mary’s. Special Merit Award - Tony Forrisstial Committee. Jack Furlong Award - Paddy Walsh (Colligan). The award winners enjoyed a meal afterwards in Lawlors Hotel which was also attended by County Board Chairman Tom Cunningham and the Board Life President Seamus O’Brien. The event was organised by the County Communications Committee. Value of attractive Competitive Fixtures LAST weekend the value of attractive competitive fixtures was emphasised in the attendance at many of those games, as interest gradually builds the crowds will follow. Attendance at All-Ireland club football - Final Replay Crossmaglen Rangers v. Garrycastle 10,000; ANFL Mayo v. Dublin 10,000; ANHL Kilkenny v. Galway 6,194; ANHL Tipperary v. Cork 10,150; ANHL Waterford v. Dublin 5,000 plus. In addition, a further 17 Allianz National Hurling/Football league games were played last week and it all goes to show if the public are provided with attractive competitive fixtures. They will turn out in numbers and the build-up to the league semi-finals should provide further evidence off same. 6 GAA Dungarvan Observer Sports | Wednesday, 4 April, 2012 County U-21 B Football Final Sunday, 8th April At Walsh Park Clan na nGael -vBrickey Rangers IN the opening game at Walsh Park on Sunday next, Western champions will take on Eastern champions Clan na Gael in the county U-21 (B) football final which has a throw-in time of 2 p.m. Clan na nGael are a group team comprising of players from the Butlerstown, Dunhill and Fenor clubs and have been quite impressive in their march to lift the Eastern title defeating Kilmacthomas in the Divisional decider by 1-16 to 1-4. Theirs is a solid side with John Shanahan guarding the net front- ed by Conor Rockett, Thomas Dunbar and Ryan Butler. Centre half back Luke Middleton is flanked by Darragh Grace and Pierce Dunne. At centrefield they will again look to the partnership of John Francies and Anthony Whelan while in attack Brian Dunbar, Mark O’Reilly, Eamon Murphy, John Power, John Phelan, Philip Lavery and Sean Cheasty will all be in contention for selection. Brickey Rangers have emerged as the surprise packet in the Western Championship. Sam Keohan kept a clean sheet in their games against Ardmore and Comeragh Gaels with team captain Philip Walsh situated at full back marshalling his defence in some style, well supported by Ian Walsh, Darragh Tobin, Jack Ahearne, Diarmuid Tobin, Jack O’Donnell and Nigel Walsh. Out at midfield Michael Barry and Martin Houlihan have developed into a formidable duo. While up front Thomas Harty, Tadgh Tobin, Jamie Kiely, Barry O’Halloran, Christopher Murphy, Colm Hayes have all seen action with full forward Conor Walsh being among their leading scorers. Then, young Laurance Houlihan who was listed among the substitutes for last Friday night’s Divisional decider was called up at the last minute and proved his worth with a double goal strike. Playing at Walsh Park Clan na nGael will be slightly fancied to come out on top in Sunday’s county final. Yet, that’s unlikely to deter Philip Walsh and company who if they can put a few more points on the board could again upset the odds at the city venue. 2011 County GAA Award Winners. [Rory Wyley] Waterford camogie team overcome Limerick Waterford …………………..3-11; Limerick ……………………..1-10 ON Sunday last April 1st the Waterford ladies took on Limerick in Cappoquin. Waterford captain Nicola Morrissey put Waterford on the scoring board first in the first minute of the game with a well taken point from play. Three minutes later Limerick’s Nollaig Houlihan scored their first point, while two minutes later Limerick’s Nora Collins put them ahead with her well taken point. Waterford’s Trish Jackman was in fine form scoring 2 points from placed balls in the tenth and twelfth minute. Limericks Niamh Mulcahy scored their next point in the fourteenth minute which was to be their only score for the next ten minutes. Waterford’s Nicola Morrissey, Trish Jackman and Mairead Murphy added three more points between them to their tally within these ten minutes. It was Limerick’s free taker Niamh Mulcahy finished the half's scoring with two points, ending the half on a scoreline of Waterford 0-7; Limerick 0-5. The second half began with Limerick scoring the first score courtesy of a Niamh Mulcahy point, Waterford’s Nicola Morrissey replied with a fine point from play. Limerick at this stage were coming into the game and the Waterford backs were being well tested but were well able for the pressure with some fine clearances from centre back Jennie Simpson, and the sticky full back line of Shauna Prendergast, Kate Marie Hearne and Vicky Falconer. Limerick’s Niamh Mulcahy was very accurate and slotted over three beautiful frees before Niamh Richardson hit the back of the Waterford net on the 20th minute, putting them ahead on a scoreline of 1-10 to Waterford’s 0-9. Waterford’s Shona Curran grabbed the ball from the puck out and hit the ball over to score their next point. A minute later the speedy Waterford wing forward Caithriona McGlone hit a rasper to the back of the Limerick net. Waterford were coming back into the game and a very determined Trish Jackman goaled in the 25th minute before a McGlone goal a minute later, Waterford were now in the driving seat and finished the game with a fine point from corner forward Zoe O’Donoghue ending the game with a very healthy score of 3-11 to Limericks 1-10. We then had our Ballad group made up of Mark Stewart, Ivan O'Neill, Liam Motherway and Jack Sliney, they sang 2 songs and they came 3rd in their category, our hilarious Novelty Act under the direction of Will Motherway came on in the second half. Performers in the Novelty Act were:- Ivan O'Neill, Liam Motherway, Ciaran Hunt, Diarmuid Costello, Jack Sliney, Oisin Ormonde, Mark Stewart and Kieran Crawford, they gave a fantastic performance and they got 1st place for their efforts. The last category of the night was the set dancing competition. Under the direction of Mary and Carleen Casey the dancers danced brilliantly in their category. Dancers were, Mairead Lucey, Rebecca O'Keeffe, Rebecca O'Neill, Rebecca Mac Sweeney, Jack Sliney, Ivan O'Neill, Mark Stewart and Liam Motherway. The set dancers came 3rd in their category. Well done to all our Scor participants and to their tutors; the hard work has definitely paid off. Each of the 12 participants received a medal or two and we are extremely proud of each and every one of them for the effort and hard work that they have put in, they have done themselves, their tutors, their families, their club and their school proud. Well done to you all. On behalf of all the set dancers we would like to wish a speedy recovery to one of our Set Dancers Pat O'Neill. Pat was hospitalised last weekend and had to undergo surgery (thankfully not on her feet). We wish Pat all the best and hoping she will be back dancing with us soon. Naomh Brid Juveniles CLUB JERSEYS Naomh Brid's Minor Hurlers are currently preparing for the County "A" Championship which will shortly get under-way. The club are in the process of fundraising to purchase a set of jerseys for this group of lads. In this current climate, it was felt that it would be unfair to ask any one business or individual to fund our venture through sponsorship, as has often been the case in most clubs in the past. With this in mind, we came to the decision of approaching and inviting a selection of potential sponsors, who may be interested in entering a draw to become the named sponsor on the new jerseys. The cost of entry is set at €50, and if successful, the winner will receive their name or company logo on the new jerseys, which will be a great source of advertising for many years to come. All entrants will be announced on the night of the prize draw, and will also be thanked in the local papers and on our facebook page. Anyone interested in entering this competition can do so by simply contacting any of our club committee who will provide you with all the relevant details. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank you all most sincerely for support in the past, and we look forward to your continued support in the near future. SYMPATHY Sincerest sympathy is expressed from all involved with our club to the Walsh and Enright families of Abbeyside on the tragic loss of Mary and her infant daughter, Molly. May they both rest in peace. No words can sum up the sense of loss that their families must feel at this time, but our thoughts and prayers are with them. We also send our best wishes for a speedy recovery to Pa Enright and young Jack Lacey, both of whom were injured in this tragedy. COMERAGH GAELS Brickey Rangers 2-5; Comeragh Gaels 0-8 There was no joy for Comeragh Gaels footballers in last Friday nights Under 21 'B' Western Football Final, played in Dungarvan's Fraher Field, where they lost out by three points to a very good Brickey Rangers side. Hard luck to all the lads and everyone involved here. MINOR FOOTBALL Our Minor footballers, playing with St. Pats, have two games in the Minor "A" County Championship this week. By the time you read these notes, they will already have played De La Salle, a game which was down for decision on Monday night of this week, April 2nd at the Colligan venue. Then on Wednesday night, April 4th, they travel to Rathgormack for their second game in three days. The lads go into these games having won their opening two rounds of this championship against Gaultier and Ballinacourty, so hopefully we will be able to bring you news of further success in next weeks notes. UNDER 16 FOOTBALL Our Under 16 footballers kick off their Division 3 County Championship this coming Saturday when they face Kilmacthomas in Colligan at 11:30 am. The lads have prepared well but face a Kilmacthomas side who had a high scoring win in their opening game two weeks ago, so they could have a tough test of their ability here. This championship is run on a 13-a-side basis, and the lads will play seven rounds of games before determining who advances to the County Semi-finals. We wish the lads the very best of luck in this campaign. St. Pat’s 2012 GLEESON CUP West Waterford regained the Gleeson Cup for the first time since 2010 after an excellent second half performance secured a deserved victory over their Eastern counterparts in the 31st annual u-16 divisional hurling tournament final which acted as the curtain raiser to Waterford's league clash with Dublin at Dungarvan's Fraher Field on Sunday afternoon last. UNDER 14 On Monday, 26th March we commenced the Feile Peil competition for 2012 when Ardmore travelled to Clogherane to play the semi final of the competition. Indeed Ardmore showed that had every intention of progressing as they displayed a delightful brand of football right from the start. Luckily for us we weathered the Ardmore early attacks and a Stephen Donovan goal and a brace of points gave us an early lead. However, some hesitation amongst our defensive lineup allowed the concession of a sloppy goal and midway through the half Ardmore had got back on level terms. The game was now delicately balanced before a powerful run by Shaun Murray produced a tremendous goal to see us edge back in front. Further points saw us go into the half-time break leading by a 2-5 to 1-2 scoreline. The second half saw a gallant effort from the Ardmore lads and minute-by-minute they narrowed the deficit. Thankfully we knuckled down to the challenge ourselves and at the final whistle we hung on for a 2-7 to 1-8 victory. We now progress to the Western Feile final where our opponents will be Ballinacourty. This game was due to have been played last week but due to the extenuating circumstances that the Ballinacourty club endured last week, it was quite rightly deferred to Tuesday 3rd April. Panel: Crohan McGregor, Conor Duggan, Peter Queally, Gary Donnelly, Mark Allen, Jack Lacey, Dion Keoghan, Glen Waters, Conor Hayes, Dylan Murphy, Shaun Muray, Kealan Daly, Stephen Donovan, Brendan Cullinan, Luke O’Callaghan, Lee Moore, David Baumann, Rory Donovan, Eoghan Flynn, T. J. Kiely, Conor Sheehan, John Power, Greg Waters, Mark Allen. Further fixtures for this group include: Thursday, 5th April Western Feile Hurling Q/F V Abbeyside at Clogherane Time 7.00 p.m. Monday, 30th April Western Football League Round 4 V Ballinacourty at Abbeyside. To be confirmed Western Football League Round 3 V Ardmore at Ardmore. UNDER 13 There seems to be a bit of a gap now for this group as our next game in round 5 is not due to take place until Sunday, 22nd April when we are due to travel to Ballymac to play the Nire with an 11.30 a.m. throw-in. UNDER 12S All the lads in this age group are currently involved with the under 13 age group and are presently fairly busy with both matches and training sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Competitions for this particular age group are not due to take place until early April and as with last year will have a Friday evening game schedule alternating with their under 11 counterparts. More about the schedule when fixtures and opponents become available. UNDER 8 AGE GROUP This age group were at the Sports Centre last Saturday morning where they continued their Winter/Spring training sessions. When this group started out last October some would have been just introduced to the game of hurling for the first time and thence their level of ability in the art would not have been great. However, due to a lot of hard work and endeavour great credit must be due to the children who continue to make great progress in the skills of the game. Indeed not alone has their attendance over the winter months been excellent but their willingness to learn has been a great help too. With the Summer months now ahead of us and hopefully some favourable warm weather it is now time to move outdoors and on this Saturday, 7th April training for this group will take place at the club grounds at Clogherane with a starting time of 11.00 a.m. FRIDAY EVENING Attendance at the Sports Centre exceeded all expectations last Friday evening when the largest numbers to date showed up not alone to put strain on the coaching staff but also on the floor space of the Sports Centre itself. Having received their Easter Holidays from school earlier that day it was a very enthusiastic and boisterous group that set about enjoying themselves for the hour. The talk over the hour was the rumour of the Easter Bunny arriving after the session and this may have added to the excitement amongst the children. Thankfully, that rumour was confirmed when after a gruelling and exhausting session (for the coaching staff only) each child was presented with an Easter egg to complete a great day. We can all take comfort from a recent medical survey that recommends a limited intake of chocolate so lets all enjoy this wonderful season where we can enjoy these pleasurable treats without feeling a sense of guilt. Unfortunately last Friday, 30th March was the last Friday for this age group in the Sports Centre and many thanks to the Centre staff for all their help since last October. As the schools have also broke up for the Easter Holidays and Summer time is not too far away training for this age group will resume outdoors at the Club grounds at Clogherane on the first Saturday, 21st April after their return to school. Meanwhile lets enjoy our eggs and have a very enjoyable holiday. SUNDAY MORNING APRIL 1st Last Sunday morning was a very busy day for the club when Dublin Club Kilmacud Crokes made the journey down to Clogherane with not only groups of Under 10’s, 12’s, 14’s teams but saw fit to bring their senior team along as well prior to attending the league game in the Fraher Field. Preparations for this visit have been ongoing for the last few weeks and we were delighted to be able to accommodate Kilmacud Crokes once they issued their desire to travel. Again the facilities at Clogherane came to the fore, as all three juvenile games were able to take place at the same time on the three different fields. On the top field the Under 10’s were divided into two groups and accounted themselves well. For those who attended the Waterford game later that afternoon these four teams were also in action at halt time displaying their skills. The middle field was occupied by the Under 14 age group who got the better of the Kilmacud lads after a tremendous game. It was going to be an eventful weekend for the Dublin lads as they were staying in Cork later that evening before going on to play Cork city team Na Piarsaigh on Monday morning as they continue their preparations for the forthcoming Feile Iomaint competition which will be hosted in Dublin in 2012. Talk about a professional preparation. The lower field was occupied by the Under 12 age group where despite their best efforts had to succumb to a powerful Kilmacud group. With all juvenile games finished it was left to the seniors to entertain where it was great to see former local man Jamie Burke line out at right half forward for Kilmacud. Many thanks must go to the field committee for having the fields laid out in fine condition. Pride of place however must go the parents, guardians and people who not alone contributed with a supply delicious food but gave of their precious time to serve the food to the best part of 300 adults and children. Its not often that we get an occasion where everyone gets involved in some form or other in club activities but its great to know that such excellent co-operative and coordinated efforts can be produced when called upon. Great credit to all involved for making such a memorable day. Many thanks. DUNGARVAN LADIES INTERMEDIATE 11-A-SIDE COMPETITION Our intermediate ladies got their campaign off to a winning start with a good win over Clashmore on the scoreline 2-7 to 0-4. The girls showed no sign of rustiness and are now looking forward to the next match in the league section against Ballymac. UNDER 16 CHAMPIONSHIP The under 16 team played Comeragh Rangers recently in the championship. The team got off to a very good start and were four points up at half time and a major upset looked on the cards. In the second half constant pressure from a very strong Comeragh Rangers team proved too much for the girls who were well beaten in the finish. Next up for the team will be a home match against St. Pat’s/Na Déise. UNDER 14 Our under 14 team got their year off to a good start in Dungarvan field on Saturday last with a good win over Inch Rovers. Despite a slow start the team settled down well and played some good football and showed excellent team work. Well done girls. COUNTY UNDER 14 TEAM Well done to all the girls from the club along with their team manager Pat Sullivan on their excellent win in Stradbally last weekend against an excellent Tipperary team. They now face Clare in their final group game with a 100% record having also defeated Limerick. COUNTY UNDER 16 Best wishes to the girls and Crohan who will start their campaign against Limerick in the Munster championship this week. SYMPATHY The ladies club wishes to extend our deepest sympathy to Conor Lannen and family on the death of Mrs Annabelle Lannen who died recently. We also wish to extend our deepest sympathy to the Walsh and Enright families and the Abbeyside GAA club on the tragic deaths of Mary and Mollie Enright. Leaba i measc na Naoimh go raibh acu. COIS BHRIDE Sponsored by Cunningham's Hardware, Tallow UNDER12 HURLING - MICHAEL CONDON MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT Last Saturday we hosted the Michael Condon Memorial Tournament in Tallow for the very first time. Played in glorious weather and both pitches in great condition, four teams played in two very competitive semi-finals, Cois Bhride v St. Mary’s and Cappoquin v Brickey Rangers. The winners of both games would go through to the final with the two losing teams playing each other. We played St. Marys in our first game and what a game it turned out to be. We were very slow to settle and extremely rusty and before we knew it we were two goals down. St. Mary’s were very fast and skilful and were playing some great hurling. Things were looking very bleak for us as we went in at half-time 3 goals down. We had to make a few changes to the team and as a result we came out in the second half a totally different team, as each player upped their game and improved their hurling. We managed to draw level at full time to force the game into extra time, 5 minutes each half. Nothing separated both sides as it looked like it was going to end in a draw again when Kieran Crawford sent over a wonderful point to win the game for Cois Bhride in the dying seconds. After a short break we played Brickey Rangers in the final. Playing with a strong wind we started like we ended the first game, hurling brilliantly, fighting for every ball and not giving our opponents any time to settle. A great goal by Ciaran McCarthy just before halftime put us in a commanding position leading 1-6 to 0-1 at half-time. In the second half we didn't let up and never looked like losing the game, with all the team hurling fantastically. When the final whistle blew the lads were delighted to be the first ever team to win the Michael Condon Memorial Tournament. A big well done to all the panel: Dean Beecher, Oisin Ormonde, Tony O'Donoghue, Ivan O'Neill (capt.), Shaun Henley, Ciaran McCarthy, Eoin McGrath, Kieran Crawford, Ben Ahearne, Micheal Condon, Liam Motherway, Shannon Murray, Faye Curley, William Cunningham, Anthony Walsh, Rebecca Hannah. A special thanks to the Condon Family for kindly sponsoring the tournament and providing a wonderful trophy and medals for the blitz. Thanks to St. Mary’s, Cappoquin and Brickey Rangers for taking part in the tournament and also to John and Brian for refereeing all the games. Also thanks to all the people who made sandwiches and refreshments and helped out in the clubhouse after the games. It was a fantastic day and it was great to see such a crowd at the field to give encouragement to all the lads. U-9 GO GAMES On Monday evening we hosted Lismore in the first round of the U-9 Go Games Hurling. We started slowly as Lismore scored a goal after 5 minutes before Tom Dalton put Cois Bhride level with help from Shane Martin and Rachel Roche. We were forced into a change just before half-time as Ethan Scotton got a knock and had to come off. At the beginning of the second half Darragh Spillane picked up the ball and after a solo run scored a lovely goal, before we added another from Tom Dalton. Rachel Roche, our only girl, had a great game before she was substituted due to injury. We finished the game with goals from Shane Cronin and Tom Dalton and a fantastic Cathal Hunt save in the dying seconds making sure it was Cois Bhride's night. Stephen Roche, Jake Curley O'Brien, Dylan Beecher and Cian O’Brien all played fantastic games for Cois Bhride. Next up is an away game versus Abbeyside next Monday. Team: Cathal Hunt, Shane Martin, Jake Curley O'Brien, Stephen Roche, Rachel Roche, Darragh Spillane, Dylan Beecher, Mark Dalton, Tom Dalton, Shane Cronin, Cian O Brien and Ethan Scotton. CHAMPION YOUR LOCAL CLUB Just a final reminder that the "Champion Your Local Club" promotion in the Irish Independent is due to finish this Saturday, April 7th. If successful in collecting the required number of tokens the sports equipment will be donated to both Knockanore and Tallow Primary Schools. SCOR NA bPÁISTÍ The County Finals of Scor na bPáistí were held last Friday night in Cappoquin. Scor has been an important part of the GAA calender since 1969, with this year's Scor na bPaisti being the biggest in recent years, with three qualifying rounds and a large attendance at last Friday's County Finals. Cois Bhride were well represented on the night with all eight of our players, who represented Na Seamroga, taking home honours. First up was Oisin Ormonde who finished second for his confident recitation of Frank O'Connor's "A First Confession". This was followed by bronze medals for the Ballad Group of Ivan O'Neill, Liam Motherway, Jack Sliney and Mark Stewart who gave brilliant performances of The Fields of Athenry and Teigh Abhaile, before all four claimed bronze again in the Set Dancing. The lads then turned their attention to the Novelty Act and put in fantastic performances in their brilliant production of "Doctor Hypno" to deservedly win the gold ahead of tough competition. (Novelty Act - Mark Stewart, Ivan O'Neill, Liam Motherway, Ciaran Hunt, Jack Sliney, Oisin Ormonde, Kieran Crawford, Diarmuid Costelloe.) Well done to all involved, it is a great achievement in what was the first year entering Scor na bPaisti for most of the lads. CHILD DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME The second session of the Child Development Programme will be held in Tallow GAA Clubhouse next Tuesday evening at 7 pm. The first session of the programme was a great success and was enjoyed by all participants. It is important that all juvenile coaches attend this programme, so please make an effort to attend next Tuesday evening. It is important to remember that Membership needs to be paid by players for insurance purposes. Membership is only €20 for a family or €10 for a player. Ardmore FUNDRAISER CYCLE Well done to the eighteen cyclists who made the journey from Glanmire to Ardmore on Saturday week last. Everything went to perfection on the day, we had excellent weather and after leaving Glanmire at noon we had stops at Lough Darragh and Youghal Bridge before arriving in Ardmore at 4.00 p.m. Many thanks to those who cycled and, of course, the van drivers and car drivers on the day. LIAM GLEESON CUP Well done to the West in their big win over the East on Sunday last at Fraher Field. Our own Michael Cronin held the full back position on this very talented team and I am sure he will go on to wear the county jersey in the years to come. MINOR FOOTBALL Affane 2-11; Ardmore 2-8. This was our second game in this year’s championship and even without the services of a number of players the team fought all the way to the end to be narrowly beaten. SENIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE We played Dungarvan in the first round of the senior league on Friday night last. It was a very fast moving game with some great scores delivered by both teams. Ardmore’s work rate is improving with each game as every player gave it their all. Had not been for a great save by the Dungarvan keeper in the last minute , we could have snatched a victory. U-21 FOOTBALL: BRICKEY RANGERS SECURE U-21 WESTERN TITLE Fraher field was the venue for the Albert McGrath Newsagent's under 21 Western B football final which saw our under 21’s take on the hotly favoured Comeragh Gaels. It was our men in black and amber though that made a blistering start with some well taken scores and courageous defending to edge ahead of their opponents. The turning point of the game however was the scoring of two goals by full forward Laurence Houlihan in the first half which put daylight between the teams. The awaited onslaught from Comeragh Gaels came at the beginning of the second half with a string of points to narrow the gap. Brickeys responded well with some well worked scores from the forwards and determined defending by the backs that kept the well earned lead. The pressure reached breaking point with only three points in the difference until Conor Walsh broke clear to point and bring the lead to four points. The final minutes saw a last burst of effort from Comeragh Gaels but the outstanding Brickeys defence fought hard and made some last stitch tackles that allowed them to hold on until the eagerly awaited final whistle was blown. This is the first time the titled has returned to the Brickey Valley since 2006 so well done to all involved. They will now go on to play the County final on Sunday next (8th of April) in Walsh Park at 2pm, So come along and give the lads all your support. Bonmahon A VERY SAD PERIOD In the last week or two a number of deaths have occured of people associated with the club or its members. On March 22nd Mary Lannon of Seafield House passed away and is mourned by her mother and brothers Maurice and Edmond to whom the club extends its sympathy. This was followed by the death of another local man, Tommy Mooney. Tommy had played for Bonmahon in the very early days of the club almost fifty years ago. Although he later transferred his allegiance to Kill he remained a totally dedicated GAA man all his life. Then on Monday 26th came the very tragic news of the death in a horrific car crash of Mary Enright, nee Walsh of Dungarvan. Mary was a niece by marriage of Fr. Michael Enright, former P.P. of Ballylaneen and a good friend to this club and its members. Then came the sad news of the death of Mrs. Hannah Wall, whose family, and extended family, have played a major part in this club. At the funeral Mass Hannah was mourned by her sons Pat (for so many years Chairman of the Club), Gerry, Michael and daughter Carol and her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. During the Mass all of her grandchildren took part in reading the prayers and son Michael movingly sang one of his mother's favourite songs. Then Pat spoke to the congregation about Hannah' life and achievements. It was a moving speech but also captured the essential good humour and kindness which led to her having so many friends and such a devoted family. Her passing leaves a void in the history of this area, but she will not be forgotten. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dilis agus anamna na daoine eile a fuair bas i rith na seactaine caite. GAMES We have had two League games at Intermediate Football level recently. On Monday, March 19th. we met Kill at Portlaw and took away a good win after a hard fought contest. Then last Saturday we met Tramore in Tramore and came away winners by one point. During this game the selectors made the brave decision to bring on some of the younger and newer players on the panel. This paid off well with these players striving to show what the could do and justifying future selection. Interesting times ahead and all the more reason for supporters to attend traing sessions and see what is coming up at the different levels. FIXTURES LIST We have now received a fixtures list for half the coming season. After a competitive hours football the match finished level, Rathgormack 1-12, St. Saviours 2-9. Both teams were under strength and showed signs of it being their first match of the year. A big improvement will be required for our next match in the league away to intermediate team Bonmahon in two weeks time. We send our sympathies to his brother Buddy, his nieces, nephew, relatives and friends. May he rest in peace. Full tribute next week. SHAVE OR WAX The club held a very successful 'Shave or Wax' night recently, or should I say the players and managment did. All proceeds from the night went to a players fund for injuries, physio, footballs, hurleys, sliothars, referees etc..... DEEPEST SYMPATHY Sincerest sympathies are extended from Na Déise Ladies Football Club to the Walsh and Enright families on the death of Mary in a tragic accident. Mary was the heart and soul of Ladies Football in Abbeyside and will be a huge loss to Ladies Football throughout the county. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dilís. COMMITTEE MEETING There will be a committee meeting held tonight (Wednesday, 4th April) at 7.00 p.m. in Modeligo Community Centre. All committee members are asked to attend. 11 Abbeyside/Ballinacourty SYMPATHY On behalf of all our members and supporters at home and abroad we would like to send our deepest sympathies to the Walsh and Enright families on the tragic and heartbreaking death of Mary Enright (nee Walsh) and her daughter Mollie Enright last week. When news of this terrible accident began to break around the Parish on Tuesday morning all who heard it were struck by a sense of disbelief and shock at this terrible taking of two young lives which held so many years of joy and promise for many people especially those close to them. As this news slowly began to sink in, all of our prayers and thoughts turned to Mary’s husband Pa Enright, to David and Ursula Walsh and their families and to Jack Lacey and his family. To say that the Walsh and Enright families are steeped in the GAA would be an understatement. Mary has served ladies football in our club and at County level in numerous capacities for many years and there was rarely an evening in the playing season when she wasn’t on duty with a club or county team. Pa has, of course, played for the club for many years now winning County titles in both codes as dependable goalkeeper, and at all times the ultimate team player. Mary’s father David is well known to all involved in GAA circles and he has been involved with the club for many years where his role as an outstanding fundraiser has seen him raise substantial funds for the club on many occasions. Mary’s sisters were involved in Ladies Football also while her brother Kevin is a member of the Minor Football team who had played on Monday night. The Enright family are, of course, part and parcel of our club for many generations as Pa’s father Liam is a former club Chairman and along with his brothers played in many of the club’s finest hours in the 60’s and 70’s, whilst Pa’s brothers Eoin and Stephen are valued players today. This year, Pa came on board as a Club Committee member and typical of his dedication to the club agreed to take over our Minor Football team. Mary as was always the case supported Pa in this job and was on the sideline supporting the team at last Monday week’s game against St. Pats. Those who know Pa and Mary would not be surprised by this, as since they started going out together many years ago they were almost inseparable and supported each other in so many ways, they were a true team if you like. It seems like only yesterday when so many club members joined Pa and Mary in The Park Hotel last Summer for what was a fitting night of celebration on their wedding. It is perhaps the fact that these happy memories are so fresh in all our minds, that makes accepting this tragedy all the more difficult. Despite their young years Pa and Mary had already given so much to our Club and were serving the club when tragedy struck their lives in such a cruel way. No words of ours can express the genuine feeling of despair felt by all of our members at this tragedy or indeed the feeling of concern that they feel for Pa, David and Ursula and their wider families. Whilst we all experienced an awful sense of loss last week our pain and suffering is nothing compared to that currently being experienced by those closed to Pa and Mary. The esteem they were held in was obvious to all by the enormous crowd present in Ballinroad for Mary’s burial on Thursday and those that took part in the Guard of Honor. We would also like to thank the many clubs within and outside the county who contacted us in the past week expressing sympathy and support. It is at times like this that the true strength and value of the GAA can be seen. It is a cliché perhaps, but at times like this words really do fail to justice to Mary and the life she lived and also to express our own pain for Mary’s loved ones in their time of suffering. All we can do is to once again say to Mary’s loving husband Pa, her adoring parents David and Ursula, sisters Elizabeth, Hillary, Clare and Rachel, brothers Billy, John and Kevin, parents-in-law Liam and Antoinette and all those who were close to her that you will all remain in our thoughts and prayers and that we will be there to support you in whatever way we can in the difficult times that lie ahead. GET WELL WISHES All of us in the club would like to send our best wishes to Jack Lacey who was seriously injured in the tragic accident last Monday in Tipperary. The Lacey family moved into our parish a number of years ago and since then Jack has played both hurling and football for the club. Throughout this time Jack was a popular player with teammates and selectors alike. This year he played on all our under 21 football games in the Western Championship and had returned home from college in Limerick on Monday night to play in the Minor Football Championship against St. Pats. As well as being a very good hurler and footballer Jack is an exceptionally talented golfer and had recently travelled to France with the Irish boy’s team. All in the club especially Jack’s team mates would like to wish him a full recovery and hopefully he will be back at home shortly to continue his recovery with his parents Mick and Anne. JOKER FUNDRAISER Our popular Jack the Joker Fundraiser will continue this Sunday night in The Stables Bar where the Jackpot will be €5,484. This week Tom Foley was drawn out of the drum but did not find the joker but did win €50 while Bernie Lonergan and Orla and Ann Power won €25. We appeal to all our supporters to continue purchasing the tickets as the funds raised will go towards our ongoing development works at the club grounds. CLUB BINGO Our club bingo will continue in the CBS Hall this Sunday night where the Jackpot is €2,000. UNDER 21 FOOTBALL The County Final of the Under 21 Football Championship has been fixed for Easter Sunday in Walsh Park where our opponents are Roanmore and we appeal to all our supporters to come along and support the team. GRANVILLE HOTEL/WLR FM AWARD On behalf of all in the club we would like to congratulate Mark Ferncombe on being chosen as the March winner of this prestigious award. Mark who has won numerous County Titles in Hurling and Football with the club was given the award for his displays with the Waterford Senior Football Team especially his three goal haul against Wicklow in Aughrim. GAA CLUB NOTES BOOKING OF PITCHES We would like to ask all team managers to please ensure that they have booked the pitch with Bernard Shields before they arrange training sessions. MEMBERSHIP Please note that membership can now be paid to Jonathon Donovan or any member of the committee. DEISE DEVELOPMENT DRAW It is that time of year again when our promoters are out on the doorsteps of the parish promoting the 2012 Deise Development Draw. The format is similar to previous years with a nine month draw costing ten euro a month to join. Whilst the Board retains some of the money to cover prizes etc the draw is crucial to helping us meet the costs involved in running our club in these difficult times. We would ask all our loyal supporters to please continue to support the draw as best they can, and if you have not been approached to join the draw but wish to do so, then please don’t hesitate to approach any club committee member. CLUB WEBSITE Our club website has undergone a major renovation recently and is well worth a visit to catch up on all the upcoming fixtures and recent results as well as containing some photos from previous years. Log onto www.abbeycourtygaa.com to see for yourself. CAMOGIE On behalf of everyone involved with the camogie club we wish to pass on our condolences to the Walsh and Enright families. To say that the community has been put into shock is an understatement. Mary will be sorely missed by anybody who ever had the pleasure of knowing her. Mollie would have had a football in her hands before she was able to walk. Ar dheis de go raibh a ainm. Given a patient ride by Bryan Cooper, the eight-year-old hit the front over the final fence and readily drew away to record a 31⁄2 lengths success. The main supporting race on the card was the Listed Kevin McManus Bookmaker Champion INH Flat Race and it produced a great result for the Walsh family, with the Ted Walsh-trained Summer Star running out the impressive winner under the trainer’s daughter Katie who was wearing the silks of her mother Helen. The daughter of Medicean delivered a1 withering turn of foot in the straight on her way to running out the 2 ⁄2 lengths victor. Groups and families are being advised to slap on the suntan lotion, saddle up and get ready for a fantastic two-day festival at Waterford & Tramore Racecourse on April 14 and 15. Pictured at the track were trainer Henry de Bromhead and jockey Andrew Lynch with a bit of help from young "Jockeys" Wayne [www.noelbrownephotographer.com] Hogan and Amy Power from Glór na Mara NS in Tramore. Saddle up for special April 14th and 15th race Bolger strikes again at Dundalk meetings at Waterford & Tramore Racecourse The second two-year-old race of the season, the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Auction Maiden, was the main event on Friday evening’s card at Dundalk and, as had been the case in the first juvenile race of the season at the Curragh, Jim Bolger supplied the winner. Bolger saddled the Rory Cleary-ridden Verbal Honesty and the son of Elusive City had to battle hard to see off Angela’s Dream by a head in a blanket finish. Perhaps the most promising performance on the card came in the thetote.com Median Auction Maiden with the Dave Marnane-trained Suehail getting the better of the strongly-fancied Exhortation by 1⁄2length under Fergal Lynch. Bolger and Manning continue fast start at Leopardstown JIM Bolger and Kevin Manning have made a fast start to the new turf season and they continued their good run by teaming up to complete a double at Leopardstown on Wednesday. The pair opened their accounts in the Follow Leopardstown On Facebook Race courtesy of the win of the promising Light Heavy. The son of Teofilo was the least experienced runner in the field, but he still managed to grind out a game 1⁄2-length victory over the smart Furner’s Green. The Bolger/Manning brace was completed in the Intervarsity Challenge Handicap, with Vastitas making every inch of the running on her way to recording a comfortable 11⁄2 lengths success. Daddy Long Legs prevails at Meydan Aidan O’Brien’s raiding party to the Dubai World Cup meeting at Meydan on Saturday generally acquitted themselves very well and they secured a win courtesy of Daddy Long Legs in the Group 2 UAE Derby. Ridden by Colm O’Donoghue, the son of Scat Daddy stretched out impressively in the straight to prevail by 11⁄4 lengths. The pick of Ballydoyle’s other runners was St Nicholas Abbey in the Dubai Sheema Classic, with Joseph O’Brien’s mount failing by just a neck to reel in Cirrus Des Aigles. THE Tramore Racecourse Centenary year celebrations continue, with even more on offer for punters and families at the seaside track, living up to their motto of ‘Much more than Racing!’ Groups and families are being advised to slap on the suntan lotion, saddle up and get ready for a fantastic two-day festival at Waterford & Tramore Racecourse, the renowned seaside track which is pulling out all the stops as it celebrates its centenary year in 2012. The track is in pristine condition ahead of its April 14th & 15th meetings with tickets selling fast, according to racecourse general manager, Sue Phelan. The new online ticketing facility on the racecourse website www.tramore-racecourse.com has proven particularly popular, she revealed. With the Aintree Grand National on April 14th, Tramore is planning a special package for groups, companies and punters who will be able to watch the big race on a giant screen at the track. A €29 admission fee covers a reserved table in the Graun Hill Suite, Main Course & a drink from the bar, with a tipster on hand to ensure you get plenty of winners! The second race day, Sunday, April 15 is very much focused on families with a special Family Friendly Afternoon planned at the track with free children’s entertainment including bouncy castles, face paint- ing and a Punch & Judy Show as well as lunch for families in the Graun Hill Suite. “We have had a phenomenal start to our centenary year,” according to Sue Phelan. “We have welcomed punters back to the track who haven’t been here in years and the memorabilia for our Centenary collection and exhibition continues to pour in. “We are very thankful to all of our loyal supporters for their continued good wishes and we look forward to seem more familiar faces along with some new ones over our two days in mid-April. Our new Waterford Rose will be with us for the meeting and we look forward to welcoming dancers from the Hip Hop Dance School on our family day.” Waterford & Tramore Racecourse is one of only a few in Ireland that races throughout the year, with 11 meetings on the calendar. Highlights during the year include the four day August Festival, which offers an exciting programme of Flat and National Hunt racing, attracting great crowds and playing host to all the big names in the racing industry Ireland’s Eurovision hopefuls and most famous twins, Jedward, will undoubtedly cause a huge stir when they perform at a Pop Picnic on June 3. For more, check out www.tramoreracecourse.com; Facebook.com/TramoreRacecourse BARRY Geraghty stole the show at Navan on Saturday, completing a treble that included the two most valuable contests on the card on horses trained by Edward O’Grady. The pick of those wins was unquestionably his success on Tranquil Sea in the featured Grade 2 Webster Cup Chase, with the former Grade 1 winner out-battling Zaarito by 13⁄4 lengths. His other success for O’Grady came in the thetote.com Novice Chase, with Slieveardagh surviving a dramatic moment on the run-in where he almost ran off the course, but the eight-year-old rallied gamely to prevail by 1⁄2-length. Geraghty’s other win came in the thetote.com Handicap Hurdle on the Robbie Hennessy-trained Table Mountain, with the fiveyear-old rallying to lead close home and score by 3⁄4-length. Stack doubles up at Limerick TOMMY Stack tends to start off the turf season with a bang and his string exploded into form at a packed Student Raceday at Limerick on Thursday, securing a double on the card. Croi An Or got the ball rolling for him by winning the Jog For Jockeys 29th July Median Auction Maiden, with the son of Windsor Knot battling gamely to see off the challenge of the strongly-backed Diplomat by 11⁄4 lengths under Wayne Lordan. Stack’s apprentice jockey Shane Gray was in the saddle for the second of his wins, with Cnocan Diva getting up close home to win the limerickraces.ie Online Special Packages Handicap by 1⁄2-length. Montjeu dies Tote Ireland to sponsor Punchestown Gold Cup Montjeu, the sire of three Epsom Derby winners, has died aged 16 after a short illness. Winner of six Group 1 races on the track, the stallion developed into one of the world's leading sires for Coolmore, producing numerous top-class runners. A statement from Coolmore said on Thursday: "Montjeu, the highest-rated racehorse ever by the great Sadler's Wells, has died this morning at Coolmore Stud after a short illness which was due to complications from an overwhelming septicaemia." It has been announced that Tote Ireland are to sponsor one of Ireland’s top staying chases, the Punchestown Gold Cup at the Punchestown Festival. The race will now be called the “thetote.com Punchestown Gold Cup”, promoting Tote Ireland’s online pool betting website. The 2012 Gold Cup is valued at €140,000 with €85,400 going to the winner. The race has recently been highlighted as a possible option for 2011 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Long Run and will as usual attract all of Ireland’s leading staying chasers. Added to this we also thank through their Running specialist manager, Samina Zia of Nike Ireland, for their generous and kind involvement in association with Wyley Sports who together ensure that this great West Waterford AC summer event continues to attract such increasing numbers to all of its 10 race programme. On behalf of the club and all the runners who take part in this series we owe them a great amount of gratitude for their ongoing input into the local running scene. This series is the original and still the only 10 race summer series in the country a fact that we are very proud of here in West Waterford AC While Wyley Sports and Nike sponsor the overall series itself, of course, we also must not forget the very kind sponsorship received from the individuals and companies who sponsor each of the 10 individual races in the summer programme and the various personnel involved around the county who give of their time to organise their particular race in their area. Finally, thanks of course to Coillte who give us permission to hold this league and without whose co-operation this league and, of course, the Colligan Cup would not take place each year. Detailed results can be viewed on: www.westwaterfordathletics.org IT was sunshine all the way this week in Colligan as we experienced summer like conditions for week 3 of the Mason’s Mortgages and Financial Services Spring Running League. Add in the fact that the clocks have changed and we had a beautiful evening at the Colligan venue. Tonight (Wednesday, April 4th) is the final night of this league but after 4 weeks running in this league it really will stand to all the runners when the Marine Climb, the first race in the Ger Wyley Sports/Nike Summer Series comes round on Friday, April 13th. 2 LAPS Stephen Hogan made it 3 wins from 3 in the 2 lap distance and this week, Stephen was just outside the 20 minute barrier recording 20.08. Mag Budds finished in second place again this week on 22.31. Onra Power (22.37) was faster again this week as indeed were almost all 12 runners who took part in the 2 lap distance this week. David O’Leary (25.01) will surely break the 25 minute mark on the last night while Laura Fitzgerald went from 29.58 in week 2 to 27.56 this week. Well done also to Liam O’Donnell who similarly went from 29.57 last week to 28.28. 5 MILE FLAT In the absence of Jason Travers this week Michael Ryan took full advantage and also recorded an excellent time of 31.01 which is great running by this young athlete. Eoin O’Riordan (32.28) finished second this week almost a minute faster than last week while Tony Ferncombe finished in third place in 34.33. Newcomer to the league Conor O’Neill finished in 4th place in 37.02. Eddie Doran (37.36) is recovering nicely from his injuries while Ann O’Donnell (40.48) and Gráinne Ni Cheirín (45.12) made good progress again this week as did Lorraine Dixon (45.53). Congratulations also to Jason O’Riordan (53.35) who took a full minute off his time again this week. 5 MILE HILLS After 3 weeks of this league it looks like Kevin Kenneally is in control with 3 wins under his belt Paul Brunnock and Conor O'Neill cross the bridge at last week’s Mason Mortgages and Financial Services Colligan league. and barring injury Kevin will surely be crowned King of the Hills in the Mason Mortgages and Financial Services Colligan Spring League for 2012. Kevin’s time this week was 30.30 while Sean Stilwell filled second spot once again this week in a time of 31.15. John Leahy was in third place this week in 32.22 knocking another 40 seconds off from week 2 while Joe Gough fresh from his exploits in the Munster Masters Road Championships where he was part of a winning club and county over 50 team showed no ill effects and recorded a time of 34.08. In the ladies league we had a few injuries and absentees this week and Laura Flavin has now taken up pole position taking first place this week in a time of 38.14. This is great running from Laura who is a relative newcomer to the sport and is very dedicated to her running. Ann Dunford (39.10) filled second spot this week followed by Josie Ui Chuirín (39.41) another Munster Champion at the weekend where she too led her team to gold medals in the over 50 category. Last week we were confident that Liam Byrne would break 40 minutes. Well he duly obliged, clocking 39.20 this week while Donal O’Donoghue who comes all the way down from Cork to take part in this league is also making great progress and this week his time was down to 41.30 Calling all joggers and walkers from Villierstown and surrounding areas ARE you or do you intend getting ready for the John Treacy fun run this May, or maybe are you interested in getting fitter, feeling healthier or changing your life style. Well if you come under any of the above mentioned categories we are here to help you with our beginners and regular runners 5 km mini league where our aim is to help you get fit and up to speed by taking part in our league which will be held on the John Treacy 5k Route in Villierstown the same route which will be used for the Annual John Treacy 5k run/walk in May. The league is open to all levels of runners, Joggers, walkers or even former runners and it’s on Wednesday evenings starting on tonight 4th April at 7:00 p.m. The mini league will be held for 8 weeks and registration each Wednesday from 6.45 p.m. at the VECP Office, Villierstown. A small entry fee of €2 each week. We would love to see you there. All are welcome from beginners to Olympians! from 42.21 last week. Jacinta may have been absent this week but she obviously gave her gang instructions that there would be no slacking because there were great improvements in times recorded this week by Caroline Russell (48.42), Jackie Tobin (48.57), Martina Walsh (49.13), Rita Cronolly (50.54) and Nicola Dee (50.55). LEAGUE TABLES AND PRIZEGIVING This is a 4 week league and the rules of the league are that you have to run all 4 weeks to appear on the league tables and of course these must be in the same distance i.e. 4 weeks of the 2 lap and not 1 week 2 laps and the next week hills. There are separate men’s and ladies tables with divisions of 5. There will be movement between divisions which means you could be top of your division after 2 or 3 weeks but if someone in a higher division doesn’t turn up then you will move up. Mark Mason of Mason Mortgages and Financial Services has kindly sponsored this league once again this year and the prize giving will take place after the Marine Climb in the Marine Bar Pulla hosted by Christy and Helen O’Neill on Friday, April 13th at 9.30 approximately. THANK YOU As always we are indebted to our stewards Dixie and Michael and our finish line team of Shirley, Liam and, of course, Tony. Once again thanks to Mark and of course Amy who were on hand again this week to help out at the Athlete of the year competition WITH the racing calendar getting busier at this time of the year, we would like to remind all athletes that if you run in a race outside of the local races you must contact Angeline Drennan at 086 3843934. Sympathy WEST Waterford Athletic Club extends sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Mary and her daughter Mollie Enright, Abbeyside, who tragically died last week. May they rest in peace. Last Saturday saw Dave bring his charges to Tramore and they continued to keep up their recent good run by beating the hosts 4-2. All in all this squad is a testament to what hard work will achieve. The under 15s travelled to Mooncoin seeking to secure victory to possibly become champions, with their nearest challengers Railway not playing. It was of utmost importance to get a result. In the end the lads came away with a draw. The story now is that Railway have two games and require full points from both games to become champions, anything less and we secure top spot. Well done to the boys for a brilliant effort throughout the season, whatever the next few weeks may bring. On the Junior side of things, all games were cancelled due to the sad passing of former league referee Gene Roche. CLUB GEAR Orders for club gear are now being taken. A brace of Aaron Donnelly goals inside the opening 10 minutes saw the Western side lead comfortably by 2-5 to 0-1 midway through the opening half. East Waterford did claw themselves back into contention mainly thanks to the accuracy of Shane Ryan from placed balls and when John Ahearn rattled the Western net there was only a goal between the sides (2-5 to 1-5) with 10 minutes remaining in the opening half. Conor Gleeson restored a 4 point lead for the Westerners but it was the East who finished the half strongly with 3 unanswered points (2 from Shane Ryan and 1 from Sean Colfer) in quick succession to leave just the minimum between the sides at the change of ends (West 2-6 East 1-8 at half time). West Waterford captain Conor Gleeson opened the second half scoring with a fine point on 32 minutes with Sean Tracey responding for the East but this proved to be their last score of the day as the West dominated from here to the final whistle. Substitute Shane Bennett struck over a 40th minute point before both sides were reduced to 14 men as Colm Roche and Sean Barlow both received their marching orders. The game was effectively ended as a contest in the 46th minute as twice in a minute West Waterford had the ball in the net as Sean Daly and Patrick Curran raised green flags to put the result beyond doubt. Shane Bennett and Conor Morrissey struck over a brace of points each with Gearóid Hearn also getting his name on the score sheet as the West won back this prestigious tournament following a deserved victory over a gallant Eastern side who kept playing right to the final whistle. Scorers: West: Aaron Donnelly 2-0, Patrick Curran 1-3, Sean Daly 1-1, Conor Gleeson & Shane Bennett 0-3 (each), Adam Crawford & Conor Morrissey 0-2 (each), Gearóid Hearn 0-1. After the game County Bord na nOg Chairman Sean Breathnach thanked Liam Gleeson for his help in the running of this unique tournament and also complimented both teams on a fine game of hurling. Austin Flynn (All-Ireland winner with Waterford at full back in 1959) was on hand to present the trophy to the West Waterford captain and Fourmilewater club man Conor Gleeson. Once again all involved in Bord na nOg would like to sincerely thank Liam Gleeson for his help in the organis- ing of this ever popular tournament which is now 31 years on the go. The fact as well that this game acted as a curtain raiser to the Allianz League game between Waterford and Dublin further enhanced the reputation of this tournament and certainly will be looked at of making this an annual event in the County Bord na nOg calendar. Many thanks also to Ollie Drummey and the Fraher Field committee for the use of the pitch which was in immaculate condition and well done to all the players and team mentors for putting on a wonderful display of hurling and I have no doubt many of these hurlers on display last Sunday will adorn the Senior inter – county jersey in the years to come. RACING TEAM UPDATE – MORE GOOD RESULTS IN FERMOY The Silver Pail GP has provided good results for DCC in the past and last Sunday was no exception with Marc Flavin taking 3rd in the A3 race and Michael Ahearne and Emma in the prizes in the A4. On a perfect day for racing Marc, Stephen Murray, Cian Dwyer, Maurice Hickey and Sean Dwyer lined up for the A3 race; four 20km laps of the Glanworth/Castlehyde circuit. True to form Stephen, Cian, Marc and Maurice were on the attack from the gun, to the discomfort of your scribe who was still trying to get his legs up to speed in his first outing of the season. On the second lap a group of 12 went clear, with none of your heroes in it. However, Marc and Youghal's Eoin Whyte bridged across to the break and this was to become the break of the day. They worked hard and quickly built up a lead of 40 seconds, which then went out to 90 seconds. Back in the bunch the lads were doing a super job of policing any moves. On the last lap the break began to shed riders and was down to 8 in the last couple of miles when a rider went down hard. This caused the group to split and it took a big effort from Marc to regain contact. Inside the last kilometre Marc came round and was leading out the sprint but the line wouldn't come fast enough and 2 riders Cappoquin Camogie Club FIXTURES Our first under 12 blitz takes place on Saturday the 7th of April at 11.00 a.m. in Ballyduff Upper. Texts have been sent to mams/dads of those on our U-12 lists and it would be great if you could give Gina a ring to let us know if your daughter is available for this date. Many thanks The first date for the under 14 squad is a home venue on the 17th of April against De La Salle – the girls have had a couple of challenge matches over the last week and are progressing well under the watchful eyes of the two Martins. So put the 17th in your diaries and pop along to the GAA pitch to cheer on the girls. Our Junior squad eagerly await their first round in the Junior League which commences on Monday the 9th of April with a home fixture against the Brickeys at 11.20 a.m. So the next week or two are pretty active - keep up the training girls and remember new mem- bers are always welcome so feel free to head along to one of our training sessions – these (for the moment) are on Thursday evenings at 7.00 p.m. and Saturday at 5.00 p.m. EASTER FUNDRAISING DRAW Brisk ticket sales were reported outside of Kellehers over the weekend. Many many thanks to the personnel who gave up their time to do a ‘slot’ on the rota. Could all the girls please bring back their tickets this week as the draw takes place on Saturday and it would be fright to leave out someone who has bought a ticket. Drop them to your trainers, Cara in the Credit Union or to Gina or Trish by Thursday please. Please do your utmost to sell as many as you can as this is the clubs main fundraiser toward running costs for the 2012 season and all proceeds will be used for that purpose. We have some great prizes on offer and look forward to your support. Tickets are still available from players and committee members and are €2 each or a book of 3 for a €5. WINNIE’S TRAD FEST Well done to the Committee who run this event every year. This year was a great success yet again and it brings some extra business to our town which is always welcome. The weather even ‘played ball’ with some bright sunshine and not a drop of rain in sight over the entire weekend. Well done lads and roll on next year! HOLIDAYS Happy Easter to all players, committee members, mentors and supporters. Exam students enjoy the break – once back after Easter it’s a quick trot to the state exams. Get a little bit of study too though! eventually came round him with Eoin Whyte taking the win. The rest of the lads came home safely in what was left of the bunch after a big crash took down a lot of riders 500m from the line. We had another big representation in the 3 lap A4 race with Emma Walsh, Tony Hickey, Colin Organ, Anthony Dwyer, John Flynn, Keith Kenneally, Michael Ahearne, Dermot Gough, Michael and James O'Mahony in action. At the end of the first lap Tony got caught behind a big crash and had to take evasive action, his off road skills coming into use. Despite the lads' efforts none of the attacks were sticking and another big bunch sprint was inevitable. Another big crash just before the line split the pack but Michael Ahearne was best positioned and got up to take 10th with Emma taking first lady. As ever, there was a tremendous spread back in race HQ and as ever DCC weren't found wanting when it came to cake. LIAM ROSSITER PYT WEEK 1 – MARC FLAVIN NAILS IT Who needs the Tour of Flanders when you have the bog road on your doorstep. DCC's very own cobbled classic got underway last Wednesday night with Week 1 of the Liam Rossiter PYT league. Roadworks in Cappagh meant a deviation from our usual route and double the bumpiness as riders turned left at Powersfield House through Ballyduff and out to Ballinameela before turning back in the bog road. On a beautiful night for cycling 31 riders signed on and there were some superb times recorded with Marc Flavin getting closest to his predicted time, and Stephen Murray recording the fastest time of the night. Thanks to Pádraig and Sean for timekeeping. Frank Browne and Maurice Fennell will be looking after the clock tonight (Wednesday). We will be looking for people to look after the times for the next 3 weeks. These events depend on contributions from all members so don't be shy. Deise Kickboxing Club ALL 3 travelled to Tipperary recently with head coach Vinny O’Brien to fight on 'The Brawl In The Hall', fight night. First up for the Dungarvan Team was Kryzstof who was competing for the first time. Kryzstof fought a tough opponent and despite some sustained pressure from Kryzstof the fight went the full 3 rounds with the Dungarvan man getting the well deserved victory. Next up for us was Shane McGrath who was also fighting in the ring for the first time. Shane’s fight started at a very high tempo right from the very first bell and also went the 3 rounds with Shane coming out on the wrong side of the judges decision. This was a very entertaining fight and Shane will surely come back stronger and compete again in the near future. Sarah Kiely was our third fighter in the ring and she fought a tough fighter from Tipp town in a fight which had the capacity crowd on its feet for all 3 rounds. Both girls stood toe to toe for the 3 rounds and put on a cracking fight which saw the girls be called back to the ring at the end of the night and be awarded fight of the night. This was such a good close fight that the girls will fight again in June on a show in Kilmac. DÉISE DEVELOPMENT DRAW The first Déise Development Draw will take place this Friday night. SYMPATHIES The club wishes to express its deepest sympathies to the Lombard family, Clashmore on the recent death of Molly Lombard. Her son’s Eamonn and Michael were, of course, heavily involved in our club in year’s gone by as players and officials and indeed many of her grandchildren and great-granchildren have worn the redand-green down the years and still do so. Molly will be sadly missed from the life of the village by all who knew her. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h’anam dílis. COUNTY FOOTBALL LEAGUE Our Senior Footballers made their season debut on Sunday last in the County Football League when they took on Gaultier at Clashmore. Score 2-10 to 2-10 at full-time so a good first workout. The focus turns to hurling this weekend with an Western Intermediate Hurling league fixture down for decision as we are due to travel to An Rinn to play them at 6.30 pm on Saturday evening, so we hope to see plenty of support going down to that one. CLUB LOTTO Our Club Lotto Jackpot has hit the magical €10,000 mark which will be a fine prize indeed for whichever lucky patron will win it, so from last week on we have capped the prizemoney and split the jackpots with a second jackpot beginning now at €1,500 and building up by €150 every week which will come into play only when the original €10,000 jackpot is won. DEEP SADNESS A deep sadness was felt around West Waterford last week after the tragedies which befell the Enright and Walsh families of Abbeyside. The Club would like to send their sincere condolences to Pa Enright and his family and to the Walsh family on the death of Mary and Mollie in such tragic circumstances. Anyone that was acquainted with Mary knew her for being a larger-than-life character who had an infectious personality and she will be a huge loss to those closest to her, as well as within ladies GAA circles and indeed within business life in Dungarvan. MINOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP Our minor footballers were in championship action on Friday night last against Clan na nGael which they won by 2-16 to 2-2 on the night. This week is a busy one for them again with an away game against Roanmore having been played last Monday night which was also a victorious outing by 3-13 to 3-8 and yet another game tonight at Clashmore against Tramore at 6.30 pm so we hope to see you all up at the field to cheer them on in that game.
