What to Expect in Second
Grade
Welcome to Second Grade
Second Grade is an exciting year. Your child is learning important skills and
moving toward becoming more independent. Our Goal is to help your child learn the
skills from the Common Core and North Carolina State Curriculum so they are
prepared for future learning. We also want to help your child build their
independence with setting daily responsibilities, goal setting, and recording their
progress. These skills are necessary for a successful school year and to build
confidence.
The Common Core Standards for Reading, Listening and Speaking,
Writing, Mathematics, Listening and Speaking are located on this user-friendly
website.

the folder on a designated day. Homework will include reading and math assignments and a
few projects.

give to their teacher.
-We celebrate birthdays with our friends at the end of the day. Students can bring in a
store bought treat and drink.
-Students will be allowed to have two friends sit with their family during a lunch visit. This
gives you a nice visit and still allows space for other families to visit.

-Shady Brook will continue to use the Positive Behavior Support System using the punch
cards to reinforce good choices. In the classroom, each child will have a behavior chart
that they will get signed each week.
