participate
– 15 questionnaires were sent out and 7 valid
responses were received
– 1 people attended all the past Roundtable
meetings- policy and geo science sessions
– 2 people attended 2 Roundtable
meetings(2007&2009)
– 4 people attended Roundtable meeting once (2 at
2007& 2 at 2009).

• Did you propose any bilateral data cooperation
project(s) during any of these meetings
– 4 submitted proposals
– Cooperation with UN GAID e-SDDC proposal
• A joint group was established
– enlarge cooperation on bilateral seismology data
exchanges
• Since May 2009, CENC has been providing waveform data of
seismology to IRIS
– A joint study on data policy

• If you encountered any scientific, technical,
funding, policy, or socio-cultural barriers to
your proposed project(s) please describe
them as specifically as possible.
– Without any funding it is very difficult to carry
forward those projects proposed in the
Roundtable.
– There exist differences on data sharing strategy in
the two countries.
Question 4
• What recommendations would you make in
order to reduce any barriers
– Expecting US side to forward a framework for
scientific data cooperation including data on which
US side hope to cooperate. Then both sides can
discuss deeply and propose concrete cooperation
schemes according to the availability of Chinese data,
which is effective.
– Li Guoqing will propose a cooperation project on
China-US historical natural disaster data archiving and
service. Problems that may occur is that there exists
protection of data policy in US side, or there is no
counterpart institution to take the lead to cooperate.

• Funding
• focus on relevant strategy of improving scientific
data sharing.
• both sides strengthen in-depth study on the 2nd
phase research plan of UN GAID e-SDDC
• Advancing China-US seismologic data cooperation
needs related institutions in both countries to
strengthen cooperation, sign cooperative
agreements, then there will be substantial
progress

• What recommendations would you make for
improving future Roundtable meetings
– establish a small bilateral expert group, who will
determine main aspects of cooperation(Draft)
based on asking for advice of relevant experts,
including likely data sharing content and means;
on this basis, submit this Draft to a wider range
discussion, calling for comments on cooperation
content and means, etc.

• future conferences should focus meantime 2 aspects
– keeping comprehensive macroscopic exchanges with
continuous expansibility, and specially tracking and
improving several meaningful cooperation projects.
Particularly it is expected to have deep discussion into
concrete funded projects on data sharing and application
technology cooperation and exchanges. Each conference
can determine name list of exchange visits and projects, so
as to effectively improve cooperation and exchanges
between CAS and NAS and bilateral CODATA committees.
• More scientists and researchers should be invited to
the Roundtable.

• Suggesting the further Roundtable should
include three phase/sections
– keynote presentations, introductions and
exchanges, as well as common actions and
cooperation progress and plans.
• Further strengthening bilateral exchanges,
enrich cooperation contents under the
condition of obeying national policy.
