Men's soccer gets first w in in 21 games
Elon opened the scoring just
1:56 into the second half, when
Backman scored off the assist from
Broscious and Byrd.
High Point tied the match 8:58
later, when Shane Curran knocked
in a pass from Kelly Harris to tie it.
The Panthers then took a 2-1
lead when Sean Forte scored at the
71:01 mark.
Elon forced overtime when
Beaney took a quick pass from
Roberts off a restart.
The game remained scoreless
through the first overtime, but the
Harris goal gave the win to High
Point.
“We played well in a exciting
game, it was a battle out there,”
Reilly said. “This could be the
start of a great rivalry with High
Point since they just went Divi­
sion I like us.”

It’s not about whether you win
or lose, it is how you play the
game.
On Saturday, the Elon Col­
lege men ’s soccer team kicked that
statement right into the goal.
Playing on the home field of
the Virginia Military Institution
Cadets, theFightin’ Christians got
their first win in 21 games and their
first win at the Division I level.
Elon came away with a con­
vincing 7-2 victory.
Elon jumped to a quick lead
and never looked back opening the
scoring with four straight first half
goals.
Joe Broscious opened the scor­
ing with a goal at the 2:52 mark.
Elon’s next goal came off a header
by Breon Byrd at the 16:26 mark.
Byrd and B roscious also
scored the next two goals for Elon
at 18:45 and 26:38.
Rich Daughtridge got VMI on
the board with a penalty kick at the
34:48 mark.
Elon then answered back when
James Bonniwell scored at the
38:46 to extend the lead back to
four goals.
Elon’s Scott Backman scored
his first goal of the game at the
63:33 off an assist from Damian
Smith and his second goal at 81:40
Elon fell to the University of North
Florida 3-2 at home on Saturday,
Elon opened the scoring with a
goal from 5 yards out by senior
Stephanie Sorrells at the 13:13mark.
North Florida responded back
with an u nassisted goal from
Rachael Gagliano.

Morse scored Elon’s second goal
just before the half to give Elon the
2-1 edge.
Elon held the lead until the
57:07 mark when Jennifer Hobson
tied the score.
The Lady Christians hung tough
until the 78:18 mark when Leigh
Ann Tabor headed one in to give
North Florida the win.
“We did enough good things
today to win,” Webster said. “We
had great chances. As long as we
keep a positive attitude about our
play we’ll be okay.”

added two.
With the win, a big burden
was lifted from the back of the
entire team.
Coach Mike Reilly hopes the
win boosts the confidence of the
team.
“Today for the first time ev­
erything clicked,” Reilly said.
“We had a great overall team ef­
fort and played for a full 90 min­
utes. This win should make the
players feel better about them­
selves and the team.”
Last Thursday, the men took
on High Point at Bakatsias Field.
In a hard fought match, Elon
fell to High Point in sudden death
overtime, 3-2.
Kelley Harris poked in a re­
bound off the crossbar 10 min­
utes into the second sudden death
overtime period to give the Pan­
thers the win.
