Leadership Team volunteers - National Society of Apprentices

Leadership Team volunteers
National Society of Apprentices Scotland Leadership
Team – volunteers needed
The Leadership Team sets the direction of the work for
National Society of Apprentices Scotland and is made up
solely of apprentices. The Leadership Team is always
looking for apprentices new to the society to get involved.
What does the National Society of Apprentices Scotland do?
The National Society of Apprentices Scotland believes that the more apprentices that we hear from
about their experiences, the more we’re able to make positive changes for apprentices.
The National Society of Apprentices Scotland is run by a Leadership Team. This Leadership Team
sets the direction of the work for National Society. The leadership team is made up of apprentices
and is made up solely of apprentices. The leadership team is always looking for apprentices new to
the society to get involved.
In the first year of the National Society, the Leadership Team decided that the focus of our work
should concentrate on increasing membership to the National Society by running engagement days
in colleges and by building relationships with employers of apprentices. Increased apprentice pay
has also been a priority for the leadership team and through our campaign we’ve secured national
press coverage on apprentice pay – making it an issue for decision makers in Scotland.
We’re looking for volunteers
You don’t need to have experience of being in a leadership or representative role. All you need is a
passion for making apprenticeships the best they can be, and the determination to be part of
making this happen. If you’d like to be part of a movement representing the voice of apprentices in
Scotland, then get involved with the National Society of Apprentices Scotland and volunteer to be a
part of our Leadership Team.
By getting involved you’ll get the experience of talking to MSPs, and other decision makers firsthand about the future of apprenticeships in Scotland. You’ll also get the chance to work with other
apprentices across Scotland and abroad. Most importantly you’ll get the chance to represent
apprentices from across Scotland and make lasting positive changes to the way apprenticeships in
Scotland operate.

Being part of the leadership team: advantages to apprentices
Being part of the Leadership Team for the National Society of Apprentices Scotland is a unique
opportunity. Apart from working with other apprentices and getting to know how apprenticeships
work in Scotland, there are many different skills you can get from being part of the Leadership
Team.
Here are just a few:

Presentation skills – As a member of the Leadership Team you are a crucial advocate for
the work that the National Society does. As part of this role you may end up giving
presentations to other people, and organisations, about the work of the National Society –
some of whom might be hearing about the apprentice experience for the first time.

Engagement and facilitation skills – In your role you may be asked to run engagement
activities, such as a focus group or hosting a stall at a college, to find out what other
apprentices think.

Leadership skills - You will be responsible for shaping the direction of the National
Society’s work. This means that you will be making decisions, analysing information from a
variety of sources to make good decision, and convincing others both in the Leadership
Team and apprentice members about what the National Society of Apprentices Scotland is
working on and why others should get involved.
Apprentices on the Leadership Team: advantages to employers
Employers benefit from having their apprentices on the Leadership Team. As a member of the
Leadership Team, your apprentice will have the opportunity to work with a team of apprentices to
lead the work of the National Society of Apprentices Scotland.
Your apprentice will learn good practices from other apprenticeships, bringing new ideas into the
work place. Your apprentices will also be connected with apprentices in Scotland and across the UK.
Your apprentice will also gain confidence in public speaking, gain experience of working in, and
negotiating with, teams to form policies and engaging with other apprentices across a variety of
sectors.
