The course aims to introduce students to politics and economics of the Asia-Pacific region; it does so from the perspective of International Relations. It examines the role of US in the region, the Japan-led economic model in East Asia, the rise of China and evolving Asian order, and the ASEAN and multilateral institutions in Asia-Pacific. It also looks specific issue areas, such as maritime issues in the East China Sea and South China Sea, and non-traditional security and human security issues in the region. The objectives of the course are to enable students to make informed assessments and enhance their sharp and critical thinking about today’s regional and global issues. By the end of this course, students should familiarise with important issues of East Asia and Asia-Pacific in the context of globalization and global transformation, and to develop policy oriented analytical skills. ************ 课程要求 Course requirements: The class will be taught by faculty member (Dr. Shunji Cui), across Spring quarter (8 weeks in total, meet 2 times a week), and conducted in English/Chinese, using both English and Chinese language materials. Class meets twice per week and each class builds sequentially on what we discussed/studied in the previous class/lessons, students are expected to attend each class unless unusual circumstances prevent it. In such cases the instructor would appreciate being notified by the student, beforehand if possible. It is expected that all students will have completed all of the required readings and be prepared to discuss them by class time on the day for which they are assigned. All students will be expected to participate actively in class discussions, do one essay, one presentation, and take a final exam. Plagiarism or any other form of academic 1 dishonesty will be grounds for failing the course. REQUIREMENTS/GRADING: Participation and Class Discussions ---------------20% Presentations --------------------------------------------30% Final Exam------------------------------------------------50% Participation: Participation concerns attendance and active participation in class discussions. Attendance matters. Numerous unexcused absences will have a very tangible effect on one’s overall grade, and excessive unexcused absences will result in a failing grade in the course. Presentation: Students will do a presentation on one of the themes covered in this class. We will have approximately two student presentations per week. Presentations should be done in English. Final Exam: The final exam will be in the form of essay writing. Students are required to submit their exam essay by the end of the class. The length of essay should be (around 1500 words in English, but who cannot write in English can write in Chinese around 2500 words), and should meet academic writing styles. The topic of exam essay will be given in the beginning of the class.
