Thanks to a group of local dog lovers,
the Oakville and District Humane
Society will be hiring a trainer for dogs
waiting for adoption at the shelter.
Oakville’s R-Dog Post Park Leash
Free volunteers have raised $42,451
from its 5th annual Cause for Paws
fundraiser hosted by Wayne and
Beverlie Rockliffe, attended by some 400
people in June. Over the five years,
Cause for Paws has raised more than
$100,000 for the humane society.
“We’ll be designing a new enhanced
dog-training program where our staff
will be better trained and be able to
spend more one-to-one time with the
dogs,” said Johanne Golder, executive
director of the Oakville and District
Humane Society.
“The biggest thing you can give an
animal is your time.”
Currently, the humane society
assesses the dogs physically and behaviourally and provides as much training
as possible through its volunteer dogwalking program.
“Most of the dogs that come through
the shelter have little training, are poorly socialized and have developed behavioural issues,” said Golder, adding many
are strays.
“A lot of the strays that come here
have had bad experiences and we have to
build their trust.
