FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) is the UK's leading
organisation for commissioning, exhibiting, promoting and supporting artists’
work and innovation in the fields of film, video, and new media. We believe
in the ability of individuals and communities to express themselves creatively,
and work with international artists to develop exhibitions, increase knowledge
about new technologies and their social impact. Housed in the iconic FACT
building in the historic Ropewalks area, two galleries, FACT Connects – a
public engagement space and state-of-the-art cinemas invite visitors to
experience a range of FACT activities from exhibitions and live web casts, to
training and conferences; and finding new and interactive ways to encourage
engagement throughout its programming spaces and in partnership with a
broad range of participants and audiences.
Technical Services Department
The Technical Services Department within FACT will be responsible for
providing the IT and technical needs of the organisation. The department
works in a coordinated way to cover all technical needs across FACT. The
Technical Team is run by FACT’s Head of Technical Services and is
composed of an Exhibitions Technician, Audiovisual Technician and IT
technican.
The team is responsible for the systems and networks in the FACT building,
IT support, maintenance of all technical equipment, external services such
as hires and audiovisual production facilities, staging of live events, as well
as the development of all technical aspects of its artistic programme.
FACT’s Artistic Programme

FACT’s Artistic Programme includes four strands of work which all bring
people,
art
and
technology
together.
Through
its
Exhibitions;
Collaborations; Research and Innovation and Public Programmes, FACT
initiates and develops cultural projects in close collaboration with artists
and creators., researchers and cultural producers. FACT’s Programme
Techician will be their interface for all technical matters, and will contribute
to all stages of the production process, from early conception to final
public presentation.
Purpose of post
The Exhibitions Technician will work closely with FACT’s Programme Team
to design, produce and deliver - from a technical point of view - a diverse
and
challenging
array
of
projects
around
art
and
new
creative
technologies.
This includes exhibitions and other forms of presentation to the public
including newly commissioned art works, residencies for artists, practical
workshops,
professional
training
activities,
community
oriented
collaborative projects, performances and live events.
The post will also play an instrumental role in the technical development
of newly commissioned art projects, collaborating closely with artists to
ensure that all artistic works are produced to high standards, within FACT’s
timeframes and allocated resources.

As part of the Technical Team, the post will contribute to the management
and maintenance of FACT’s technical equipment, and will ensure that it is
fit for purpose.
Who are we looking for?
The Exhibitions Technician will be expected to have a good working
knowledge of exhibition presentation
and production technologies,
including design software, installation build, digital tools, audiovisual
equipment and be able to plan and manage wide-ranging technical
matters relating to the production and presentation of artists’ work.
Key Responsibilities:
• Act as FACT’s technical interface for artists, curators, researchers,
producers, and any other external collaborators involved in FACT’s Artistic
Programmes.
• Provide technical consultation and advice to artists and curators, as well
as internally to FACT staff..
• Liaise with artists to gather, process and assess all technical requirements,
to ensure that exhibitions and projects are produced and staged to the
highest technical standard within the available resources, especially when
developing newly commissioned works to identify needs and to recruit
skills where necessary
• Design and produce technical floor plans (2D lay-outs and 3D
perspective drawings), and provide all necessary detailed materials for
fabrication.
• Clearly communicate the exhibition design giving realistic schedules and
coordinating FACT equipment alongside additional outsourced equipment

• Subcontract and manage a team of contractors for exhibition building,
installation of artworks and staging of artistic projects.
• To order all materials required for exhibition designs and technical
production of artworks.
• Produce a maintenance plan for all exhibitions and projects and
implement it on a day-to-day basis.
• Provide training, advice and information to invigilators – and other staff
regarding daily switch on and off, as well as other technical operational
issues.
• Contribute to the inventory, servicing and maintenance of FACT’s
technical equipment, making sure it is fit for purpose.
.• To organise and maintain FACT’s loading bay as a space for
workshopping as well as temporary storage.
• Diagnose technical faults and carry out simple repairs
Essential Criteria

Evidenced
experience
of
planning
and
designing
spaces
and
installations

Proven knowledge of design, fabrication and construction techniques
suitable for building installations both indoor and outdoors

Competent
use
of
computer
aided
design
software
VectorWorks or AutoCAD

Knowledge of working with artists or in artistic environments

Solid experience of managing contractors and suppliers

Exposure to working with new technologies from a creative perspective

Skills in managing and maintaining technical equipment

Desirable Criteria

A knowledge of the context in which FACT is operating and the
function
of the role in relation to artists

Accredited training in design software

Experience of A/V installations including projection, lighting, and audio
design and installation

Experience in planning & designing in the artistic, cultural or theatrical
sector

Project management training

Full, clean driving licence
