Sporting Schools is a national program available to all Australian primary schools. It will help children foster a lifelong interest in sport, gain a healthier mind and body, have fun and learn sport activities and games in a safe environment. Sporting Schools will provide primary school children with an opportunity to experience the NetSetGO program in their school environment. To ensure a consistent approach to delivery in Sporting Schools, Netball Australia has developed resourcing to support coaches in this area. GO S ES S I ON PL ANS 3 I NT RO D U CTI O N NetSetGO Net Tier (5 – 7 years) GO Tier (10 years and above) Focus: Developing Fundamental Motor Skills through netball games. Focus: Training to play. Delivery: The Sporting Schools Net session plans have been developed to provide 4 sequential sessions for delivery within the Sporting Schools program. Players will be encouraged to develop the fundamental motor skills in a netball environment by being involved in individual, small and large group games. Activities should allow for maximum participation and repetition with the key outcomes for each having a direct link to a netball specific skill. Set Tier (8 – 10 years) Focus: Applying skill to small games. Delivery: The Sporting Schools Set session plans have been developed to provide 4 sequential sessions for delivery within the Sporting Schools program. Players will be involved in activities that have a specific netball skill outcome and activities will allow players to make more decisions and execute skills in small-sided netball games whilst learning the rules of the sport. Players will hone their skill execution and decision making in this program. 4 Delivery: The Sporting Schools GO session plans have been developed to provide 4 sequential sessions program for delivery within the Sporting Schools program. This program is intended to be used for school teams to engage in a small training block before or during involvement in school sport competitions. Players will be engaged in small-sided games to continue to develop skill execution, decision making and tactical awareness. Players will be required to have a greater understanding of the rules and positions on the court. This program will allow players to confidently engage in match play situations within their school sport model. This program has been designed with a number of minor games in the Get Into It section, however coaches may choose to use this time to play modified matches dependent on the development level of the group. Activities Activity Cards Pass and Run Variations As part of each session plan, a number of activity cards have been designed to ensure a consistent approach to delivery for coaches delivering in Sporting Schools. The Pass and Run Variations are included in the Get Into It sections. These invasion games allow players to play a modified version of netball, using the NetSetGO rules and often in smaller groups with more opportunities to be involved. The coach can decide whether they use the game identified in the session plan, or another pass and run activity. What’s on a card? Objectives – Clearly defined netball specific learning outcomes relevant to the activity. Coaches should base their coaching delivery and questioning around the stated learning outcomes. Start Out/Get Into It/Finish Up – The format of each session broken up into a warm up (start out 10 – 15 minutes), main session (get into it 40 – 45 minutes) and cool down (finish up 5 minutes). Equipment/Area – What equipment and area is required to play the activity. Group Management – What group numbers are required. Description – Provides simple instructions on how to deliver the activity. Look for – Provides key technical and tactical coaching points to guide coaching as participants are engaged in the activity. Change it – Ideas on how to change the activity to reflect the developmental stage of the group and individual. Questions – Examples of individual and group questions that can be asked to develop awareness around technical or tactical aspects of the game. 5 6 SESS GO Session Plans GO S ES S I ON PL ANS IO N 7 START OUT (1 0– 1 5 M IN) Find the Court Space Objectives To develop running and footwork movements within the areas of the netball court in preparation for game play. To reinforce the concept of spatial awareness – knowing where you are in relation to others and where the spaces to move around you are. Equipment/Area Netball court or suitable playing area. Group Management Individuals. Description Players move in a variety of ways within the defined area avoiding collisions with other players. The Coach or nominated player signals a variety of ways to move around specific areas of the netball court, for example: ·· jogging in the goal third ·· jogging backwards with vision over shoulder ·· leaping over the transverse line ·· side step from sideline to sideline, repeat with cross-over steps ·· fast quick steps in the goal circle ·· jumping in the centre third. 8 Safety Define the area appropriate for numbers. Look for Encourage vision of other players when deciding where to move next and quick changes of direction. When introducing the leap encourage players to imagine ‘picking the ball out of the air’ and reinforce bent knees on landing. Change it Leaping over the transverse line can be extended to incorporate a ball or bean bags. Questions Where are the spaces to move around you? SESS G ET IN TO I T (4 0 – 45 M IN) IO N Triangle Tag Objectives To reinforce the concept of ‘tricky dodges’ to encourage quick footwork, dodging and change of direction. To develop quick footwork and a variety of short, sharp and continuous attacking movements to evade your partner and ‘shake the shadow’. Equipment/Area Markers/cones. Safety Define the area appropriate for numbers. Ensure space between groups and awareness of safety considerations such as avoiding the area near the goal posts. Look for Players can use a variety of attacking moves to tag the Runner. Netball court or suitable playing area. Group Management Continued... Pairs. Description Three cones or markers are placed in a triangle formation. The Chaser must move around the outside of the triangle to tag their opponent, the Runner. To avoid being caught, the Runner can move around the outside of the triangle, continually repositioning to keep away from the Chaser. The Chaser cannot move into the area of the triangle. GO S ES S I ON PL ANS 9 G ET IN TO I T (4 0 – 45 M IN) Triangle Tag (cont.) Change it Designate a tagging time frame, e.g. 30 seconds to tag the Runner. After both players have had a turn they choose whether to increase or decrease the size of the triangle. Add a third player in the middle of the circle who can pass the ball to the runner when appropriate. Tricky dodges: Introduce the concept of tricky dodges through targeted questions: ·· Were you standing tall with eyes up and looking at the goose or bent over looking down at your feet? ·· Did you move your feet in even steps in each direction or try to trick them with quick changes? ·· Were you up on your toes ready to move or standing with both feet flat? ·· Did you push off strongly with the outside foot to change direction or by jumping with two feet? Use player’s responses to the suggested questions to guide the demonstration for ‘tricky dodges’. As players respond ask them to demonstrate the technique and finish with the challenge to move with ‘tricky dodges’ within the defined space. Questions What moves helped the Chaser catch the Runner? 10 Coach Tip ‘Tricky dodges’ is reinforced at every level of the program. This concept directly transfers into attacking patterns of play and the ability to move in confined areas of the court. SESS G ET IN TO I T (4 0 – 45 M IN) IO N Shake the Shadow Objectives To develop quick footwork and a variety of short, sharp and continuous attacking movements to evade your partner and ‘shake the shadow’. Equipment/Area Size 4 netballs (or equivalent), markers/cones. Netball court or suitable playing area. Group Management Pairs. Description Set up players along each transverse line and the centre court sidelines. Encourage tricky dodges before the whistle is blown, then drive strongly into the centre third on the Coaches whistle. Add a defender who shadows the attackers ‘tricky dodges’. Continually swap attacking and defending roles. Extend to groups of 3, with the thrower positioned in the centre third. The attacking player uses a variety of attacking moves to ‘shake the shadow’ and receive a pass from a stationary thrower in the centre third. Safety Define the area appropriate for numbers. Look for Continue to re-enforce vision up, strong push off with outside foot, pump arms and standing up tall. The aim of the attacker on the Centre Pass is to get the defenders ‘head turning’ with the opponent losing sight of the attacker so that when the whistle is blown the attacker can sprint across the transverse line. The defender tries to follow and maintain vision of their opponent over one shoulder. Opportunities to encourage players to discuss tactics on how best to ensure the attacking player receives the pass. Change it Encourage players to think about using a variety of passes appropriate for the situation. Mix up the numbers, e.g. 2 v 1. Questions Why would tricky dodges help the attacker get the ball on the Centre Pass? Where should an attacker/defender position their body? Where should your eyes be? What techniques could the defender use to stay close to the attacker? GO S ES S I ON PL ANS 11 G ET IN TO I T (4 0 – 45 M IN) Circle Name Game Objectives To develop ball handling skills and controlled passes to a team mate on the move. To encourage co-operative passing and catching. To reinforce the concept of spatial awareness. Equipment/Area Size 4 netballs (or equivalent), markers/cones. Netball court or suitable playing area. Group Management Groups of 6 – 8. Description Players form a circle within each third of the netball court with 2 netballs. The balls are passed from player to player in the same direction around the circle. As each player receives a pass they say the name of the player who they received the ball from and the name of the player they are passing the ball to. On the coaches signal the players ‘break’ the circle and begin to move anywhere within the defined area. The same passing and receiving pattern continues. Safety Define the area appropriate for numbers. Look for Allow players to use a pass that suits their ability level whilst also encouraging tracking the ball into hands. Ensure the next receiver is ready to catch with their hands extended forward and fingers spread. Change it The circle passing pattern can be re-set a number of times to extend and apply different movement or passing challenges (e.g. change of direction before receiving a pass, only using a particular pass, changing the pass from the last pass received, altering the timing of the release of the ball). Questions What passing options can you use to clear the ball over the top of another player? Why were you successful at getting into the right position? Why? If a quick release is required what type of pass can you use? If your team mate is off balance can you adjust your lead or position to ensure a successful pass? 12 SESS G ET IN TO I T (4 0 – 45 M IN) IO N End Ball Objectives Description To explore passing options to move the ball to set up a scoring opportunity. One team begins with the ball from the goal line and aims to move it to the End Zone (goal line, goal circle or a mat/hoop placed at the end of the court). To encourage decision making and determine options to make passing, receiving and scoring difficult for an opponent. Equipment/Area Size 4 netballs (or equivalent), bibs. Netball court or suitable playing area. Group Management Groups of 10 – 14. To score, the players must move the ball into their designated End Zone. If the ball is intercepted, possession changes and the roles of attack and defence swap with the new attacking team working the ball towards their End Zone. Possession changes after a goal is scored, when the ball is intercepted or when the ball goes out of court (throw-in taken by opposition team). The coach can select the level of challenge and alter the game structure to emphasise different aspects of the game. For example: ·· allow only one player to enter the goal circle for up to 6 seconds to encourage timing of leads and strong drives in and out of the goal circle ·· add a bonus 2 points for a goal scored from within the End Zone (goal circle) ·· restrict playing space or passing restrictions ·· only allow players to pass a ball below the shoulder to encourage players to lead forward for the ball. Look for Opportunities to pair players with opponents of similar ability to increase participation. Change it Instead of having end-line players, use targets such as hoops or bins behind the line. Questions What can passers do to keep possession of the ball? Where will you aim to pass the ball when in possession? How close will you get to the interceptor before passing the ball? Where will you move to receive the ball when your team-mate has possession 14 Pass and Run Variation Add a Pass and Run activity to the end of the session by selecting an appropriate activity from the Pass and Run resource. To practice footwork and landing skills in combination with passing and running. Equipment/Area Size 4 netballs (or equivalent), bibs. Netball court or suitable playing area. Group Management Groups of 10 – 12. Description 4 players are designated Taggers who wear a bib or tag. Taggers pass the ball to each other in an attempt to close the space and tag any of the free players with the ball (taggers cannot run with the ball). All other players must move around the space to avoid being tagged. Once a player is tagged they put on a bib and join the tagging group. Play continues until all players are tagged or a winner has been declared. Safety Define the area appropriate for numbers. Look for Ensure the ball does not leave the taggers hands and is not thrown at the player. All footwork rules can apply to the player with the ball. Change it Ratio of tagging to running players: the ratio of tagging players to running players can vary depending upon the ability level and size of the group. Counting Netball Tag: the tagging group aims to make as many tags as possible in a defined time. For example, 5 tagging players count the number of tags they can make in 1 minute. Rotate tagging and running groups with each separate group aiming to make the greatest number of tags. Vary the size of the playing area: for example, two thirds of the netball court with a larger or more experienced group of players. Questions Where are the spaces to move within the playing? Why is it important to find a free space? How does this relate to a Netball game? 18 SESS START OUT (1 0– 1 5 M IN) IO N Pairs Passing Objectives To develop ball handling skills and controlled passes to a team-mate on the move. To encourage co-operative passing and catching and reinforce the pass and run sequence. To experiment with different passes to discover the value of each type of pass. To develop decision making and skill execution. Equipment/Area Size 4 netballs (or equivalent), bibs, markers/cones. Netball court or suitable playing area. Group Management Groups of 2. Description Players pair up and place 2 cones (‘gates’) about 1 metre apart anywhere on the court. Players pass to each other three times through the ‘gates’, move to a new set of gates and repeat. Players score a point for each gate they get to within a set time period, e.g. 2 minutes. Safety Define the area appropriate for numbers. Look for Correct skill execution and the opportunity to use discrete coaching to support identified players. Encourage players to attempt different types of passes appropriate to the distance and situation. Change it One player moves to a different set of gates to change the distance of the pass. After 3 passes the player who caught the last pass stays there whilst the other player finds a new set of gates. Add in defenders. This ensures players are making decisions about the type of pass and when to execute it whilst defenders are looking at timing their leap. Change the area (bigger/smaller) to change the challenge for attackers or defender. Questions What allowed you to pass successfully to avoid the defenders? What pass should you use when the defender is right in front of you? What strategies did you use as a defender to intercept the ball? GO S ES S I ON PL ANS 19 G ET IN TO I T (4 0 – 45 M IN) 10 Goal Shoot Out Objectives To develop an age-appropriate shooting technique by encouraging players to have their feet, hips and elbows pointing towards the goal post. To develop a high ball lob action when attempting a shot at goal. Equipment/Area Size 4 netballs (or equivalent), cones, hoops or modified goal rings. Netball court or suitable playing area. Group Management Groups of 4 – 5. Description Group players into teams of 4 – 5 and line them up from the corner of the goal third to a cone/marker placed in the goal circle. On ‘go’, the ball is passed down the line in a catch, pivot and pass action to reach the front player who has an attempt at goal. Regardless of whether or not the shot is successful, the player gathers their ball and runs back to the end of their line and the passing sequence begins again. The first group to ten wins. Safety Define the area appropriate for numbers. Look for Encourage players to have their feet, hips and elbows pointing towards the goal post. Players should avoid shooting with ‘chicken wings’ (elbows sticking out to the side) as this develops poor technique for shooting. Maximize the activity time by using any of the goal post equipment options detailed in Coach's Support Notes to keep the group sizes small. Change it Scoring can be changed dependent on the goals (e.g. 2 points for a goal, 1 point if the ball hits the ring). Time restrictions – challenge each group to reach the highest number of goals in a set time frame. Add in a defender. Questions Which technique gives you more control and a greater chance of the ball going through the ring? Coach Tip ‘Tricky dodges’ is reinforced at every level of the program. This concept directly transfers into attacking patterns of play and the ability to move in confined areas of the court. 20 SESS G ET IN TO I T (4 0 – 45 M IN) IO N Corner Ball Objectives Description To develop the skills of footwork/movement, ball handling, attacking, defending, and decision making skills. The ball begins with a ‘corner’ player standing in a hoop and passing to a teammate. To create a quick transition between the roles of attack and defence. Equipment/Area Size 4 netballs (or equivalent), cones, hoops, bibs. Netball court or suitable playing area. The attacking team aims to move the ball from one ‘corner’ player to the opposite ‘corner’ player (both standing in hoops). If the defending team intercepts a pass they roll the ball to their nearest ‘corner’ player and immediately become the attacking team. Group Management After intercepting the ball or after a goal is scored the attacking team immediately transitions into defence. Groups of 5 – 6 (3 – 4 on court, 2 corner players). Regularly rotate the corner player. Scoring: Consider awarding points for getting the ball successfully to the corner player or add in goals at the corners (hoops/basket). Continued... Opportunities to stop the game to highlight great examples of spatial awareness, passing, or shooting. Reinforce the importance of bending knees on receiving the ball; pivot then pass and run. Change it Change the ratio of attackers to defenders to alter the level of challenge (e.g. 2 v 3, 4 v 5). Increase the playing area: i.e. two thirds with the option of a greater number of players in attack and defence. Questions Questions should be directed to raise player’s awareness about game strategies such as choosing correct passing options, leading into space, defending the opposition and working as a team. 22 Pass and Run Variation Add a Pass and Run activity to the end of the session by selecting an appropriate activity from the Pass and Run resource. Develop skill execution in a match situation. Attack and defence principles. Equipment/Area Size 4 netballs (or equivalent), markers/cones, bibs. Netball court or suitable playing area. Group Management Groups of 5, 7 or 9. Description Players work in uneven teams (e.g. 2 v 3, 3 v 4) in an identified space on the court. The attacking team aims to keep possession of the ball for as long as possible using a variety of leads and passes to achieve this within the area identified. The defending team aims to intercept the ball whenever possible. Points can be scored for the number of passes in a row or for how many times the defenders intercept the ball. Play for a set period of time. Safety Define the area appropriate for numbers. Look for Opportunities to incorporate appropriate netball rules to this match like activity. Encourage players to try a variety of leads, including: ·· Straight lead on an angle (change the straight lead forward to an angled lead). ·· Change of direction (combine two straight leads into a change of direction). ·· Lead and drop (receiving a high ball lob on a lead and drop). ·· Double leads (continue to work the change of direction on an angle forward). Change it Change the playing area. Vary the numbers. If you like, change it to even numbers to eliminate the loose player. Questions How many times did you have to lead to ‘shake your shadow’? GO S ES S I ON PL ANS 27 G ET IN TO I T (4 0 – 45 M IN) 4 on the Move Objectives Description Game practices to develop the skills of footwork/ movement, ball handling, attacking, defending, shooting and decision making skills. Groups of 4 for each team – C, GA, GS, GD (C begins with the ball on the Centre Pass, only GS and GA can attempt a goal). To encourage players to find the spaces within the playing area to move to receive a pass from a team mate or away from an opponent. 1 player from each team is nominated to start as the hoop player (stationed at each attacking end). To develop an understanding that each team shoots to a different end. To create a quick transition between the roles of attack and defence and introduce some of the tasks of specific playing positions on court. Equipment/Area The Centre player begins with the ball in the centre circle (or equivalent if using goal third). The attacking team moves the ball until either the nominated GA or GS are in a position to attempt a shot at goal (hoop held by attacking team player). Only the two Centre players can move in each half of the court. Netball court or suitable playing area, divided into the three thirds. The GA, GS, GD are only able to move in their respective halves of the playing area. This creates a 2 v 1 set up into attack from the Centre Pass (to increase the attacker’s chance of success). Group Management Rotate hoop holders as goal posts after every successful shot at goal (or every 2 – 3 minutes). Size 4 netballs (or equivalent), hoops, bibs. Size 4 netballs (or equivalent), bibs. Netball court or suitable playing area. Group Management Groups of 7. Play matches using NetSetGO rules. At the completion of the time allocation the team with the highest score wins. Round 1 1v2 3v4 5v6 2v5 4v6 Round 2 1v3 Depending on the court space available, matches may have to be modified, e.g. using hoops as goal posts if only using a third of the court per match. The winning teams move up one playing area (until they reach the top playing area – left on this diagram) whist the losing teams move one playing area right. For example; If 1, 3 and 5 win; Team 1 stays on the top playing area, 3 moves up to the next playing area to play against Team 1, Team 5 moves to the middle playing area. For the losing teams; Team 2 moves to the middle playing area, Team 4 moves to the playing area right. Each game can range from 5 – 10 minutes, with teams re-allocated to their next court depending upon the result. After 2 – 3 rounds, and depending upon the number of teams moving between courts, it is possible for two teams to replay each other. This is often indicative that these teams are well matched and should result in a more even contest than re-allocating teams based on a number draw where ability and team strengths are not taken into consideration.
