Math Game
Name of game: Last Shape In Wins
Concept to practice/learn:
-Names of shapes
-How shapes can be broken down into or built from other shapes
Materials needed:
-Game board
-Pattern blocks (triangles, rhombuses, hexagons, and trapezoids only)
Grade level: 1st
Time to complete activity: about 15 minutes
Special considerations:
I introduced this game by playing against the whole class. They really enjoyed playing
against me and got very excited during the game. At the end of the game, there was the
opportunity to have a great math discussion about the decisions being made, which pieces we
could use to win, and how many more pieces it was until the end of the game.
Procedure for playing the game:
The point of the game is to be the last one to put a shape on the board.
1. Decide who goes first.
2. Take turns choosing a piece and putting it on the board. Each new piece needs to
touch a piece already on the board and must fit within the triangles.
3. At the end of the game, students may discuss their choices and discuss which pieces
are needed to win.
