Behavioural training for health and safety
Lower costs
| Reduce lost time injuries | Avoid accidents
Background
In times of demographic change, growing automation as well as ever-increasing cost and competitive
pressure, companies have to achieve top performance in all areas of their everyday operations. This can
only be realised if a company prioritises health and safety issues adequately. Given the ever changing
challenges, new strategies and innovative concepts are needed.
Accidents and injuries put in figures (Germany)
No assertion without facts: According to statistics, the number of deaths by accidents at work decreased in 2013. That is a positive development, however, it probably makes us lose sight of the following:
Æ
In 2013: 1.074.212 notifiable work and work-related road accidents were reported!
In the light of 42m employees in Germany, the accident rate is at 2,56%. Or to put it in other words:
that is 2,943 accidents per day (365 days/year), 122.63 per hour (24 hours/day) or two every minute!
And please note, these are only the ones which were reported!
And while we are talking about behaviour which does not end at the factory gate, here are some more
figures:
Æ
On the road
Im Jahr 2013: 3,340 deaths occurred, 2.4m accidents were reported by the police
and 374.048 people were injured (source: German Federal Office of Statistics 2014,
www.destatis.de)
Æ
At home
Im Jahr 2011: 7,868 deaths occurred and 2.8m accidents happened at home
(estimate by the Robert Koch-Institut)
The German Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (www.baua.de) took it even
further and summarised all accidents. They calculated the staggeringly high number of
8.72 m accidents in 2011, i.e. one in ten had an accident.

Humans seldom act rationally
DBy improving techniques, organisation, design and particularly the
approach to health and safety, significant results were achieved
in the last 30 years. But in most firms accidents do still happen.
It is well-known that most incidents, which lead to injuries
and/or damage, can be traced back to actions associated
primarily with human behaviour.
Often we only shake our heads in disbelief after an accident
analysis and ask ourselves: Why? How could that have happen? We secure, train, make aware, sign, discuss, caution
– but however, accidents still happen!
The question remains:
How can we sensitise people to
strongly change their behaviour?
WEKA has developed a concept which sums up various aspects of modern adult education in a sustainable
training programme aimed at improving health and safety on and off the job.
WEKA move is a new safety training, which puts focus on the value of personal safety. With clear examples as well as handy, catchy methods and the right tools, all employees in a company are encouraged to
behave health and safety oriented - not just at work, but also in their free time. More importantly, the
advantage of WEKA move move is that it offers the possibility for every employee to share their new
knowledge with the people closest to them: family, friends and colleagues. The fundamental principle we
follow reads as follows:
Safety by all for all
WEKA move | Behavioural training for health and safety
[3]
All of this is based on a simple principle
Our ac’ions are carried by ’he ever lively
awareness ’hat humans are not free in ’heir
’hinking, feeling and ac’ing, but are causally
bound just as ’he s’ars are in ’heir mo’ion.
Albert Eins’ein (1932)
„My thinking determines my actions!“
That is a sentence which is said and heard often. But the reality is that our thinking and acting is completely
dependent on the situation we find ourselves in. But the situation is often influenced by what we perceive:
be it by what we see or by what we feel in that particular moment
To put it in other words:
Humans are not machines, thus, the causes and reasons for mistakes are often not technical or caused by
the company. In fact, they can be based on
l our attitude, i.e. the way we approach a task,
l the task we are doing, or
l psychological factors we are exposed to, which influence us externally but also internally
(e.g. stress, difficulties, imprudence, trouble, lightning and climatic conditions, smells,
expectations, etc.)
As a consequence, our approach to tasks is changed, because our attitude in that moment is decisively
changed. This attitude (carelessness, haste, recklessness, etc. …) results in actions (e.g. the wish
to be quicker, avoid safety barriers, consciously or unconsciously not using protective gear). And these
actions in turn lead to injuries, damage and, consequently, cost.

The training concept
The training is not supposed to be a punishment. It stimulates us positively and thus acts in a preventive
manner. The premises are:
Æ Accidents can always be avoided.
Æ Most injuries can be avoided beforehand through adjusted behaviour.
Æ Those who act safely at home, will do
the same at work.
This knowledge is the basis of our modular WEKA move – a concept, which is implemented exclusively in
the German-speaking world by us.

Main focus of training
The training is designed to be personal and emotional. The main focus is to recognise the value of
one’s own safety, opposed to the classical approach to occupational safety and health, where the subject
is addressed technically and/or organisationally. Enjoying what has been learned and retelling it combined
with the simple application of the method facilitates its implementation. The participants are motivated and
realise that safe actions are first and foremost in their own interest.
The best way is to assure yourself!
Targeted training for employees takes place at all company levels. This has numerous advantages for you:

measurable improvements of safety due to a reduced amount of injuries and accidents
constant improvements of communication on the topic of occupational safety and beyond
quick implementation and fast success
standardised approach with provable results
clear structure – simple implementation
valuable for companies AND its employees
Sample calculation:
A midsize company (500 employees) in the metalworking industry is insured by BG Holz und Metall (occupational insurance association for wood and metal). The
basic contribution is 540,000 € p.a. (incl. a surcharge
of 8% for an increased amount of accident costs in
the previous year).
Furthermore, costs arise due to days lost by employees
(continuing pay, costs for contract workers, overtime
as well as other costs). They calculated internal costs of
600 € per accident at work.
In the previous year, the company had 120 days lost
due to accidents. Furthermore, costs arose for acci
dents off the job in form of continuing pay, which were
not statistically recorded.
Through preventive measures, the company significan
tly decreased the number of accidents in the following
year. The company was even awarded a bonus of
5% by the BG and does not have to pay a surcharge
anymore. Only 50 days lost were reported, and the
rate of illness drastically improved. The measu
res
amount to about 100,000 € and are invested
sustainably. Further improvements can be expected in
the following years.
Some figures:
Year one:

notes due to accidents off the jobs as well.

Training programme
Course modular WEKA move
For employees
Basic training
The basic training for all employees is structured into four individual trainings, which will take place at your company.
The basic training is the foundation for long-term improvement in behaviour in regards to occupational health and safety
protection.
Refresher training
In order to guarantee a permanent and lasting increase in safety, refresher trainings are offered at fixed intervals (e.g. every
6, 12 and 24 months).
Web Based Training (WBT) – optional addition to basic and refresher training
Web based training ensures that the subject matter stays up-to-date even after the trainings took place
Each course lasts 60-90 minutes with a break of 3-6 weeks between each course. Each group consists of max. 25 participants.
Special trainings
Manager training
Training of managers is an integral part of WEKA move. The half-day seminar covers topics such as to what extent the employees’ know-how regarding health and safety can also positively impact other areas like quality assurance and efficiency.
Project team training
In order to guarantee a smooth order of events and good organisation, it is useful to appoint a project team, which will manage
the internal implementation. The one-day seminar is intended to prepare said team for the upcoming implementation.
Aside from the general order of events and the main topics of the training, factors are to be determined, which will ensure
an assessment before, during and after the training.
Workshop „Train the Trainer“ (TTT)
There are various options how WEKA move can be implemented in your company. On the one hand, WEKA provides experienced trainers and consultants, who will conduct the implementation on the basis of the course by training employees
and managers. On the other hand, it would also be reasonable to qualify people in the company to hold the courses. The
advantages are acceptance and integration of the training within the operational process. Thus, it depends on your needs
how WEKA move can be implemented. The Train the Trainer is a three-day-workshop.
Further courses for e. g. contractors, families and situations on the road
WEKA move is to work holistically and affect everyone in the company. This way, the employees’ surroundings as well as
strangers on the premises can be integrated in the topic. There are various options we offer, e.g. courses focused on behaviour of strangers on the premises or special trainings with main topics such as defensive driving, cycling, domestic tasks,
safety on holiday …
