The new Gamma Irradiation Facility at CERN
Status of 137Cs Irradiator Procurement
Market Survey doc’s are now in the hands of Procurement Service (FP):
– Tech. Questionnaire, Tech. Description, Tech. Specifications are ready;
– Start-up meeting held last week;
 10 companies identified by us/FP over 6 different countries
 4 weeks given to the companies for the reply
– The list of “qualified” companies for our irradiator will be valid 1y for another
project having similar requirements.
Criteria were defined to select ONE firm capable:
– to supply the complete irradiator with the 16.6 TBq 137Cs source;
– to supply the radiation attenuator (lead filters are in option);
– to install it, perform annual maintenance and short notice service calls;
– to dismantle the new irradiator at the end of the service life in addition to the
dismantling of our present irradiator BA102.
Market Survey should be sent out next week (“announcement” already published)

What next?
Prepare the following step: Invitation to Tender (IT) ...
This basically means to develop the present Technical Description into a
final Technical Specification document. Work ongoing in collaboration with:
– DGS/RP for the radioactive source requirements;
– GS/ASE for the integration of the irradiator with the access control;
Present schedule agreed with FP:
– Call for tender to qualified firms is expected to be issued in 2012/4th quarter;
– Contract to be awarded in 2013/1st quarter at latest.
