EXPECTATIONS OF TEAM OFFICIALS (COACHES, ASSISTANT
COACHES, MANAGER and TRAINER)
The Kamloops Wolves Hockey Club runs a developmental hockey program
with a primary goal of instilling a lifelong passion for the game in all
players. Key principles supporting that goal for the Kamloops Wolves
Spring Tournament Team include: fair play; assisting all players to
achieve
their
individual
highest
development
potential;
equal
developmental support for all players; equal playing opportunities for all
players; and players having respect for the game, the rink, their team
mates, their coaches, the officials, the opposing team, and the
spectators. Consistent with those principles, Team Officials of the
Kamloops Wolves Spring Tournament Team commit to meeting the
following expectations:
1. All Team Officials shall conduct themselves at all times in such a
manner as to further the best interests of the Kamloops Wolves
Hockey Club.
2. No Team Official or Player shall be on the ice, or be present on the
bench, while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
3. No Team Official of the Kamloops Wolves shall engage in a
controversial manner with league or game Officials or with
representatives from other Associations.
4. The Team Officials shall promote pride in the uniform, and respect
for the game, the playing facilities, their teammates, coaching staff,
the opposing team and spectators, using a positive attitude.
5. The Team Officials shall prepare players for transition to playing at
higher levels.
6. The Team Officials shall prepare the players for life long hockey
friendships and continuing participation in the game of hockey.
7. The Team Officials shall develop structure and experiences that
prepare players for appropriate social behaviour while in the
community or on a road trip.
8. The Team Officials shall start every game motivated with the intent
to win while having fun.
9. The Team Officials will always remember that they are role models
for the players and that their actions will directly impact the future
and love of the game for our children.
10. During practices, the Coaches will provide equal developmental
attention to all players- regardless of their ability- to assist all
players in developing to their highest individual potential.
11. During games, the Coaches will provide equal ice time opportunities for
all players, regardless of ability. Standard practice will be “rolling the
lines” to afford all players opportunities for first shift of the game or
period, full strength, power plays, and short handed situations, with
the following exceptions only:
•
A line’s shift may be shortened where critical mistakes are being
made and immediate correction or instruction is required to ensure
the team’s effort is not compromised. The line will then return to
their normal rotation to have an opportunity to put into play what
they have just learned.
•
A player may be required to sit a single shift, or more, as a
disciplinary action if the player is repeatedly refusing to follow a
Coach’s instructions, and other tactics have failed to get the
player’s attention. Where such disciplinary action is taken, the
Caoch will provide an explanation to the player’s parent(s) so the
parent(s) can be supportive of the Coach’s actions in at home
discussions with the player.
•
Normal procedure will not involve shortening the bench in game or
tournament play. However, the bench may be shortened for a
maximum of 5 minutes at the end of the 3rd period in a crucial
game. A crucial games is defined as a game in which the score is
tied, or our team is down 1 or more goals with still a chance of
winning, and failing to win would result in the team failing to
advance to the next game in the tournament, or the team would
place 2nd instead of winning a division, or the tournament overall.
Rationale: proceeding to the next game in a tournament will give
the entire team an additional 60 minutes of ice time; and winning a
tournament when all members of the team have had an opportunity
to contribute for most for the game is just great!
12. During both practices and games all Coaches will maximize the number
of teachable moments for all players. Coaches will offer individual
and collective praise where due; correction where required- with
demonstration or explanation of the appropriate decision or action
expected of the player; and will utilize individual and team successes
and failures as learning opportunities to improve individual and team
performance in the future.
13. Coaches will provide periodic updates to the parents on items such as:
explanation of successful and unsuccessful performance in
tournaments; team strategies; and developmental progress of players
and the team.
As a Team Official of the Kamloops Wolves Spring Tournament Team, I
commit to meeting the Team Official Expectations described above.
