Queensland Health Junior Doctors Research Fellowships The Junior Doctor Research Fellowships provide opportunities for junior doctors with limited research experience to build research skills under the mentorship and supervision of experienced researchers. “It is a wonderful thing to work as a clinical scientist who not only asks the questions and pushes the boundaries but still remains intimately involved with patients and their families. Translating medicine from the bed to the bench for the better and then importantly taking what you learn back to the patient, improving their health, is the ultimate achievement of medical research.” Ken O’Byrne Round 1 Junior Doctors Research Fellowships mentor “I do think there needs to be a greater understanding of clinical research because medicine is ever evolving and always assessing new information. So I feel critical assessment is a necessary requirement for all doctors and I would like to see some level of research training for all physicians.” Jonathon Golledge Round 1 Junior Doctors Research Fellowships mentor “In a practical sense, the funding awarded via the Qld Health Junior Research Fellowship has allowed me to start my own small team. Leading a team is a key step for me in establishing my career as an independent researcher.” Dr Kate Markey Round 1 Junior Doctors Research Fellowships recipient Pictured Dr Kate Markey (Round 1 Junior Doctors Research Fellowships recipient) and Dr Geoff Hill (Dr Markey’s Junior Doctors Research Fellowships Mentor) Pictured Round 1 Junior Doctors Research Fellowships recipients: Dr Matthew Cheng, Dr Dylan Flaws, The Honourable Cameron Dick (Minister for Health and Minister for Ambulance Services), Dr Kate Markey, Dr Claudia Curchin and Dr Tavis Read (absent Dr Vikram Iyer). “this new Queensland Health fellowship scheme allows us to nurture our brightest young clinically trained researchers, like Dr Markey.” “I am thrilled to have dedicated time for my research now, rather than having to fit it around a full-time clinical registrar role.” “This scheme will confirm that Queensland can take young talented researchers within our system and get them to nationally and internationally competitive levels.” “I needed to have more dedicated time for my research role rather than juggling it with my clinical duties. And the wonderful bonus of the Fellowship is that the allocated funding allows me protected research time as well as the ability to employ a technician, giving me an extra set of hands fulltime.” Geoff Hill Round 1 Junior Doctors Research Fellowships mentor Dr Markey has embraced the Fellowship as an important professional opportunity to progress her medical career. “Previously I often used my weekends or late nights to work on my research, but the Fellowship has allowed me to start my own small team and slowly build that group, thereby establishing a career as an independent clinical researcher.” “One of the best things about being a researcher is that you are moving all the time; not stuck doing the same things and the challenge of trying to solve problems that have not been solved before is always exciting.” Dr Kate Markey Round 1 Junior Doctors Research Fellowships recipient
