The club is named… you guessed it “Healthcare Career Club”! This group has been meeting monthly in the Nursing Classroom and is for anyone who wants to know more about healthcare professions. The club was designed to help those who are unsure of what area of healthcare they might want to explore and also to nurture the interest of those students who are in the pre-requisite stage of their education. The importance of good grades in pre-requisite classes was stressed along with the amount of time a program requires to ensure you achieve success. Guest speakers have included Shailynn Shipley, current RLMC Nurse Manager and full time Nurse Practitioner student; Eric Woll, LPN and Certified Surgical First Assist, and Sethen Ettestad, Speech Language Pathologist. Attendees have ranged from high school students, pre-nursing students, Practical and Registered Nursing students and those “just interested”. The group will begin to meet again in September with more guest speakers including a physician, physical therapist, occupational therapist and others. Members will have an opportunity to explore the simulation lab and develop new skills. A service learning project will be selected in the fall and developed over the school year to be presented in the spring. Anyone interested is welcome to attend! Through lecture, discussion, documentaries, and interviews, students studied the history of the Holocaust, the Milgram study on authority, the Asch study on conformity, and the different standards of good and evil. The photo, originally a photo posted by u/FTZ on Reddit, depicts a Jew liberated from the Holocaust, aiming a gun at a Nazi soldier. Whether this photo inspires or depresses, it helps students better understand just how complicated the idea of justice can be.
