RRCC has seen the emergence
of a new student club for those
interested in or considering a career
in healthcare. The club is named… you
guessed it “Healthcare Career Club”!
This group has been meeting monthly
in the Nursing Classroom and is for
anyone who wants to know more
about healthcare professions.
The club was designed to help
those who are unsure of what area of healthcare they might want to explore
and also to nurture the interest of those students who are in the pre-requisite
stage of their education. The importance of good grades in pre-requisite
classes was stressed along with the amount of time a program requires to
ensure you achieve success.
Guest speakers have included
Shailynn Shipley, current RLMC Nurse
Manager and full time Nurse
Practitioner student; Eric Woll, LPN
and Certified Surgical First Assist, and
Sethen Ettestad, Speech Language
Pathologist. Attendees have ranged
from high school students, pre-nursing
students, Practical and Registered
Nursing students and those “just
interested”.
The group will begin to meet again in September with more guest
speakers including a physician, physical therapist, occupational therapist and
others. Members will have an opportunity to explore the simulation lab and
develop new skills. A service learning project will be selected in the fall and
developed over the school year to be presented in the spring. Anyone
interested is welcome to attend! For more information contact Donita
Ettestad, 285-2229 or [email protected].

Joe Chlebecek’s European History and Ethics
Class studies the Holocaust
By RRCC History Instructor, Joe Chlebecek
During the week of April 5-12 at Rainy River
Community College, Joe Chlebecek’s European
History and Ethics classes studied the Holocaust,
human behavior, and cultural relativism. Through
lecture, discussion, documentaries, and
interviews, students studied the history of the
Holocaust, the Milgram study on authority, the Asch
study on conformity, and the different standards of good and evil.
The photo, originally a photo posted by u/FTZ on Reddit, depicts a
Jew liberated from the Holocaust, aiming a gun at a Nazi soldier. Whether
this photo inspires or depresses, it helps students better understand just
how complicated the idea of justice can be.

Sets Sites High and are off to a Strong Start
By RRCC Baseball Coach, Josh Koenig
After finishing the 2016 season 2nd in the State of Minnesota and 3rd in
the Region, the 2017 Voyageur Baseball team have set their sites high and
are off to a good start this season, but are looking to play better baseball
going forward. The team is comprised of 10 returning Sophomores and 15
Freshman. They traveled to Florida over Spring Break to start off the season
and also took in a Detroit Tigers/New York Yankees Spring Training game!
Since returning home, they have traveled to Worthington, MN,
LaCrosse, WI, and most recently down to Minneapolis to play at U.S. Bank
Stadium (Home to the Minnesota Vikings) for competition and finished the
non-conference schedule at 12-12 overall. On Wednesday, the team opened
up conference play v. Vermilion CC at Ely. Rainy River CC split the
doubleheader losing a close first game 4-3, before winning the second game
in exciting fashion with an 8-7 win in 10 innings! The Voyageurs are now 1-1
in the MCAC Northern Division and 13-13 overall.
