Unbeknown to the lads, on a crisp and windy spring morning, they were about to play second in the league; a
team that had beaten us 6-0 on our own pitch earlier in the season. With Callum and Andrew both missing
through illness, it was going to take a special performance to get anything from a difficult match.
Continuing with one defender and a four-man midfield, which had worked so well the previous week, the
boys made a splendid start to the game. They passed freely, exploiting the wings with their triangles and
being first to the second ball every time. It was Chaddy who took a well-deserved lead with a neat strike from
Josef Rimmer. However, against the run of play, Bury scored two quick goals. This may have got The Lions’
heads down earlier in the season but not now. Josef Rimmer’s shot took a slight deflection and rolled into the
net to give the halftime score line a much fairer look. 2-2.
At half time the boys were told how well they had played and that they were more than capable of winning
the match. Some fantastic goalkeeping and brave defensive heading from Alex and George respectively kept
the team confident. In midfield, Ethan and Joe continued to win the ball well and spread the play effectively.
Luke Evans and Lewis were bright and skilful, turning their defenders inside out at points. Meanwhile, Josef
was rewarded with some good forward play and better tackling while Luke Smith was on hand to score the
winning goal with ten minutes to go, after some very good build up.
This was probably our best performance of the season so far and the lads seem to have a strong belief that
they can beat anyone they play now. Keep it up Lions!
