What is Lync?
It’s like Skype, MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger or Google Chat, but better. The service is
provided by the UOA and is available to staff.

What is my Lync User name?

What are the server setting?
Server names etc. are not needed. Everything should just be set to Automatic.
What is the preferred Lync client?
Lync 2013 but the Lync 2010 client also works well

What are the requirements of LYNC?
UOA Exchange Mailbox (Recommended)
Headset (USB) or Speakers / Mic (Recommended) or USB Phone
Webcam (Recommended)
Computer running Windows XP or above
Can I use LYNC on a MAC:
Yes but a few things don’t work as well as on a PC
Can I use LYNC on a PC running Linux?
Yes but there is no Microsoft Lync client for Linux. There a few third part tools compatible it Lync
(OCS).
Can I use LYNC on an iPad, iPhone, Android, Windows Phones etc.?
Yes install the Lync 2013 app.
Enterprise Lync Voice FAQ’s
Enterprise Lync Voice, do I require specific training to use Lync Voice?
No, but if there is demand a learning session will be run every few months.
Enterprise Lync Voice, how do I configure team calling (not a hunt group)?
A team-call group is a set of people who can answer your work calls (They need to also be Lync
users).
To create a team group: Click the settings icon, call forwarding then “edit my team-call groups
members”
Next select simultaneously ring on the Call Forwarding setting tab then select “My Team-Call Group”
from the drop down list.
How do I access voicemail?
Call 80003, Click on the attachment in your email, Hold down the 1 key on the Polycom CX300 for 3
seconds or click the voice mail icon within the Lync client.
How do I divert my calls?
From the Lync client click call forwarding at the bottom on the screen.
How do I configure Call delegates?
Yes, click settings icon “call forwarding” then “edit my delegate members”. Delegates can schedule
Lync meetings, make calls, and receive calls on your behalf.
Must my whole department be using Lync for me to convert?
Only if you are part of a hunt group.
Enterprise Lync Voice - Can my incoming calls ring on both my client and mobile
phone at same time?
Yes, click settings “call forwarding” then “simultaneous ring
Can I see when other university non - Lync phones users are using their
extensions (Presence) and will the busy call back option function with legacy
phones?
No
I do not like wearing the wired headset type supplied, what are my options?
I have used the headset but would like to convert back to legacy Cisco or Aastra
handset, what are my options?

Can I have both a desk phone and Lync Client USB device working together?
A Lync USB headset and USB desk phone will work together
Can I use my existing headset if not on the supported Optimized device list?
Maybe, give it a go.
Faulty Lync headset devices or is that responsibility of my department?

My co-workers pick up my incoming calls (Call pick-up Group) when my phone
rings, how will this function in Lync?

Will I continue to be billed for my toll calls or are they free?
Yes you will continue to be billed for your toll calls.
I am a member of a hunt group how does this function using Lync Client?
Just the same but all member of the hunt group need to be migrated to Lync at the same time.
I answer calls for my manager and other key staff members does that mean we
both/all need to be using Lync Clients?
Just get them to add you as a delegate. Click settings icon “call forwarding” then “edit my delegate
members”. Delegates can schedule Lync meetings, make calls, and receive calls on your behalf.
I would like to use Lync at locations where just access to handset is available
such as labs?
There are Lync IP phones available that don’t require a computer. EG Polycom CX500 and CX600
I understand that 111 calls can be made from my client, what happens afterhours when handsets not readily available in an emergency like at present for
Fire / Ambulance / Security Calls?
Lync IP phones can be placed in shared area and don’t require a computer or mobile phones can be
used.
With my Lync Client installed on my laptop can I make voice calls from outside
the campus i.e. home or when travelling overseas?
Yes
Will 0800 numbers work with Lync extensions?
Yes you will be able to call 0800 numbers
Voice conferencing is a great Lync Enterprise Voice feature how can I use this
for internal and external conferencing?
In outlook, go to your calendar then click new Lync meeting at the top of the screen. A link to the web
version of Lync and a dial in phone number will be displayed that can also be used for internal and
external conferencing.
I am a telecommunication coordinator in my department, what is my role and will
I receive training to support my staff?
If there is demand, leaning sessions will be run. Also just contact the service desk support and
assistance.
