Prejudice affected the lives of some United States immigrants because it kept them from getting good jobs. European immigrants coming to the United States arrived at Ellis Island. Most immigrants coming to the United States today are from Asia and Latin America. African Americans were the people that took part in the Great Migration. An example of migration would be people moving from the northern to the southern United States. Why did many immigrants move to the United States? o Possible answer: They wanted to find new opportunities, such as more freedom and better education and jobs. Some also wanted to escape dangers in their countries. Lesson Two: Sharing Cultures (pgs. 332-337) People of the same ethnic group share the same language. Adams Morgan in Washington D.C. is special because it is a multicultural neighborhood. A tradition is a custom that is passed on to others. Washington D.C., Cleveland, Ohio, and Chamblee, Georgia are all examples of multicultural communities. Vietnamese, Italians, and Mexican Americans are all ethnic groups. Customs such as music, food, and dances that are passed on are traditions. Lesson Three: Our American Heritage (pgs. 338-341) The Statue of Liberty symbolizes freedom. Mount Rushmore and the Statue of Liberty are examples of landmarks.
