Desmos Activity – Exploring Domain and Range

Today we will explore domain and range using the Desmos online graphing calculator. All answers should reflect
descriptions and comparisons in terms of the domain and range. Let’s start by zooming out so that your calculator
scale is by 5’s. Now, enter the following equations into the Desmos Calculator and make an observation.
Part I
1) On line 1 enter: y = 3 Describe the graph: ____________________________________________
Domain: ____________________ Range: _____________________________________
2) Now include y = 3{-2<x<2} a) What changed about the graph?
_________________________________________________________________________
3) On line 2 enter the equation y = 3x {-2<x<2} Describe the graph: __________________________________________
Domain: _______________________ Range: ______________________________
4) Compare the graph in #2 to the graph in #1: _______________________________________________________
5) On line 3 enter the equation y = x2; Describe the graph: ______________________________________________
Domain: _____________________ Range: ________________________________
6) Now include y=x2 {-2<x<2} a) What changed about the graph? _________________________________________
7) Compare the graph on line 3 with the graphs on line #1 and #2. _________________________________________
8) Before we graph the next equation let’s make a prediction. Do parts a and b without using
a) Consider the equation y = (x+3)2 -2.
b) Consider the equation y = (x+3)2 – 2 if {-5<x<3}
Graph the equation using the transformation.
Graph the equation with the restrictions on x.
*How can you be sure about the values of y? Calculate!
Domain ___________ Range______________
Domain____________ Range _______________
c) Compare the domain and range for a) and b): ___________________________________________________
Check your answers by
entering the equations on the
Desmos calculator only after
you have graphed them on
your own!
Part 2: Now we are going to recreate a given graph on the calculator by writing the equation and determining any
domain or range that is restricting the graph. Use your notes on parent graphs to help you.
