CHAMPIONS TROPHY IN
MELBOURNE
The world number one men’s hockey team
will compete for an unprecedented fifth
consecutive Champion’s Trophy title in front
of a home crowd in Australia this year. The
Champions Trophy will be held in Melbourne
from December 1-9, 2012, and the
Kookaburras will be aiming to win a record
13th Gold medal.
The tournament promises to provide a
spectacular hockey extravaganza, with the
top five nations from last year's Champions
Trophy, the winner of the Champions
Challenge and two invited nationsexpected
to compete.
UMPIRING ACCREDITATION
If you are, or intend to umpire local Geelong
games, or want to umpire the Rep (Hockey
Victoria) games, then you need to get
accredited under the HockeyEd programme!
From 2013, only accredited umpires (or
those in training) will be able to umpire.
Scott O’Reilly will facilitate a HockeyEd Level
1 (used to be Beginner) course session on
MONDAY, MAY 14.
There are many "badged" umpires whose
accreditation has expired, and because
Hockey Australia has changed the
accreditation process, they have to start at
the beginning. But, here is the perfect
opportunity to jump to Level 1. Practical
assessments will be scheduled at a later
date.
LEVEL 1 UMPIRING THEORY - Monday,
May 14 7pm - 9.30pm at Stead Park
Scott will talk through the Level 1
requirements, and with lots of practical hints
and discussion you'll take home everything
you need to complete the On-line course on
the Hockey Australia website.
If you haven't done so yet, please text,
phone or email Pam Sutton on 0412 914 586
or [email protected] to secure your seat.
NO JUNIOR HOCKEY ON MAY 26/27
There will be no Hockey Geelong junior
matches on May 26/27 because of the
Victorian Junior Country Championships
which are on in Melbourne on that weekend.

MATCH REPORTS MAY 5/6
Minkey Gold vs Geelong College
Gold played well again this week to hold
back a flood of goals from College, who had
more players on the field and several older
more experienced players. The game was
played at a faster, more intense pace and
was a good learning experience for the team.
Strong hitting off the back line has improved
over the past few weeks and has become an
important part of the teams defensive play.
Minkey Maroon vs College Blue
A great game by Maroon this week with
Isabelle Paul and Amelia Charleson both
showing great determination to get the ball.
Great passing from defence by Amelia with
Sam Robson creating space and making
some great position. Best Team Player
Awards to Isabelle Paul and Amelia
Charleson.
Minkey White vs Geelong
Great calling for the ball this week, and
excellent goal defence in the first half.Leah
Stengler and Kasey Hamill-Dean did a great
job in full back, staying in their positions.
Excellent intercept from Angus Ayerbe in the
first half showed how the team is starting to
follow the ball. Thanks to Matthew Hannan
from Minkey Maroon for playing for us
U11 Newtown Golden Plains vs White 1-4
White scored goals early putting pressure on
Golden Plains but backs Luka Steinwedel
and Alex Adams were able to steady the flow
of goals, as well as good work from Matthew
Boardman. Golden Plains applied plenty of
pressure in the second half and were able to
score their first goal for the season thanks to
Callum Seaton. Well done Golden Plains.
Best Team Players: Luka Steinwedel and
Alex Adams
U11 White vs Golden Plains, 4-1
A great game by White with some excellent
positioning by players, and a speedy playing
style which gave White the opportunity to
attack. Brayden Caldow at centre half kept
tackling and distributed the ball well. The
second half saw an improved team game,
although Golden Plains were able to limit the
team’s scoring success. Annabelle Brook at
left wing was always in good position and
created opportunities to spread the ball wide.
Eneko Fischer and Tommy Doggett-Williams
showed some very impressive linking play.
Best Team Player Awards to Brayden and
Annabelle.
U11 Green vs Geelong
A great first half goal by Rachel van der
Ploeg opened the account for Green with
follow up goals by Austin Lee and Rosie
Maiden. The Green team is starting to get a
better understanding of the words team work
and getting to know their team mates. Josh
D’Arcy, Sienna Linguey and Emma Baker
continually helping out their team mates in
some pretty crowded situations. Terrific
defensive work by Emma who did a great job
stopping a number of Geelong attempts. In a
really close game the two teams traded
goals however Geelong didn’t have it all their
own way with some terrific tackling by Byron
Lanyon, Jamie Van der Ploeg and Angus
Richardson. Lachy D’Arcy displayed
excellent endeavour to continue to run the
match out again showing some skilful tackle
work. Unfortunately Green finished the game
with weary legs and Geelong scored two late
second half goals to win the match. A superb
effort Green – now we’re looking forward to
next week.
U11 Maroon vs Geelong College 1-2
Maroon worked hard with only 8 players, and
never gave in even though they were
outnumbered. Great work by Henry Rodda
who covered nearly the whole field, working
hard to gain possession and pass it to the
advantage of the team. Lachlan Davis
shows great skill and understanding of the
game even though this is his first season.
Some nice passing from defence by Tom
Shanahan, and good covering by Arnie
Shanahan. Best Team Player Awards to
Henry Rodda and Lachlan Davis.
U13 Maroon vs Kardinia 1-1
Shots at goals were the theme of the first
half with Hudson Stoop and Ailish Seaton
using great team work to set up the first half
goal. Kelly O’Halloran did alot of running and
catching the ball out wide. Adam Peucker
ran hard during one short corner, with his
stick ready at the corner goal, the ball only
just going wide of goal. Making it an exciting
game to watch. Good team work prevailed
into the second half with the width of the field
being used and team members trying hard to
pass out wide.
U13 White vs Geelong 0-0
A very even game this week against an
undermanned Geelong side but our team
showed great team work in the first half with
Molly Duncan showing great skills in defence
with great support from Corey Stella and
Hailey Wyld. Thomas Pearson looked like
having the ball on a string as he tried to find
the goals. The second half showed much the
same as Molly, Corey and Hailey kept the
Geelong forwards at bay. The Newtown
centreline had some run towards the goals
led by Erin Ward, Thomas and Luke HamillDean and great passing out of defence to
find Cam Mutsaerts all but put a score on the
board. A tough nil all result.
U17 Maroon vs Kardinia 14-0
A great opportunity to practice our skills
against a highly skilled team. Tianna Lee
had her work cut out for her and still
managed to deflect a few goals from the
powerful Kardinians. Melissa Davis was able
to deflect a few shots and so did Captain
Christopher Warner. Leo Fitzgerald had the
field covered and Alex Baensch met the
challenge in his first game for the season. A
Great save by Christopher Edwards and
Katie Warren is a force to be reckoned with.
All in all we put up a good fight and it can
only improve our team skills.
Division 1 Women vs Geelong 1-10
Geelong got away to a fast start with a few
quick goals scored in the first 15 minutes.
The defence were under pressure but
worked hard, to slow Geelong’s scoring
down. Against the run of play, Shannon
Ryan scored a goal. All players were trying
hard without a great deal of luck or success.
The 2nd half saw much better team play by
Newtown, with more forays into attack. Good
work by Elese French, Penny Beckworth,
Emma Hattonand Nerida Thompson, with
Tianha Proebstl and Steph Wilson
interchanging on the wing doing a great job.
One passage of play saw Peta Hanley take
on a lone attack, beating 4 defenders to
carry the ball into the D, without scoring. A
good effort by all players against an older
and stronger competitor. Better results will
be expected as the team gels.
Women’s Maroon vs Whites 3-0
A crisp night and a cracking game by both
sides. Maroons adjusted to the open spaces
left with 10 players and made great use of
the gaps to set up lots of passing
opportunities. Strong defence from a moving
half line saw new recruit Pam Oliveiro pivotal
in the centre and well supported by Bron
Charleson. Jacinta Gebert continues to
improve each week with great stops and
switches. Complementing the halves, Narelle
Dickson and Hillary Davis did a great double
act to keep backing up and supporting Edna
Crassini in goals. Marita Seaton saw stars
but went on to score. In the second half Bron
made history with her first goal and the fans
went wild. Maree Poje in her first game found
her position and directed play for the
forwards. Jo Peters made great tackles and
advances on the right. Marita and Nicola
Maher teamed up to seal the score with a
fast 1-2 pass off. Overall a great running
game with lots of backing up from all
players. Well done!
Women’s White vs Maroon, 0-3
A good game by White, with Jess Welsh and
mum Janette combining well on the right
side of the field, creating some nice forays
into the attacking zone. Great running by
Kellie Barnes, working in both attack and
defence, with good leads from Keely West –
unlucky not to score at least one goal. Great
defence by Jocelyn Morgan and Jessie
Johnson, with Emily Matthews playing a
solid game at full back.
