Comparative Analysis Thesis
• When doing a comparative analysis essay, it
will depend on what you will be focusing
on/arguing- Do they extend, corroborate,
complicate, contradict, correct, or debate one
another?
• In this particular piece, you are doing a
compare and contrast, which means you’ll
need to find a way to write one claim that has
two parts to it.
Introduction
• To this particular comparative analysis, the
introduction strategy I want you to use is
Background information or more specifically
Frame of Reference. In this particular strategy, for
this particular assignment, you are providing
background information about the Civil Rights
Movement, the two speeches and the speakers.
You may also start with a quote and then lead to
the Frame of Reference, but the Frame of
Reference must be included. You end the intro
with a thesis.
Thesis
• If my body paragraph claims are“In order to connect with and persuade his audience, Dr.
King and President Kennedy each relied on the use of ethos
by referring to the children of America.”
AND “Dr. King’s audience was primarily composed of
supporters so his purpose was to motivate them to
continue their fight, whereas President Kennedy’s audience
had varied beliefs so he had to focus on persuading them to
support him and the equality movement”
Your thesis may read, “Despite the dynamically different
audiences and purposes, Dr. King and President Kennedy
both chose a similar rhetorical device to deliver his
message.”
Entry Task
• Grab “your” chromebook. Log in using your
student number and password. Log in to the
iBoss filter, leave the filter box open and then
click the drive button (bottom left).
• Continue work on your intro- finish, and have
a clear/strong thesis statement.
Organization
• Then, take a look at your body paragraphs.
Based on your thesis’ wording, which body
paragraph should logically come first.
• In my case, because the difference paragraph
is about the difference in audience and
purpose, I should probably start with that one
to establish the audience and connection to
purpose before I then give the statement of
similarity that is connected to audience.
Transition
• Then you’ll need to add a transition between the
paragraphs. I typically think this should build off
of the previous paragraph’s ending idea, but be
written as an introductory clause in the second. It
should also have a connection to the thesis of the
paper.
• IE: Despite the fact that these two men had a
different purpose and needed to address his
audience differently, Dr. King and President
Kennedy each relied on the use of ethos by
referring to the children of America.
Concluding
• There are many options for concluding an
essay, but for this particular one, because the
connecting idea is the Civil Rights movement,
as both men were supporters, I want you to
start with a wrap up of your argument: 1-2
sentences of addressing what was said, and
then answer the “so what” question by
connecting to the overall effect of these
speeches in terms of American History.
Example conclusion
• These dynamic and amazing men used the power of persuasion to
connect with their audience and motivate them to alter the course
of the country. Dr. King and President Kennedy knew that a change
needed to be made, and they used everything at their disposal to
push for that change: from ethos to analogies and logos. It was due
to people like them, that America saw the change from a country
ripped apart by segregation and discrimination, to a country on the
road to equality. It may have taken years, and there is still a need
for change, but the two speeches, given in the summer of 1963,
have a lasting power. In the words of President Kennedy, “Effort and
courage are not enough without purpose and direction,” and the
speeches by these two men showed the courage they had, and
gave purpose and direction to their country- a purpose we still fight
for today.
