Defining Chemical Equilibrium
Chemical equilibrium exists when the
forward rate of a chemical reaction
equals its reverse rate.

For a system to be at chemical equilibrium it
must:
1. have constant macroscopic properties
2. be closed
3. ‘shift’ when conditions are changed

How Equilibrium is Established
As a reaction proceeds, the reactant concentrations
fall and hence the forward rate (rf) decreases. In a
closed system the product concentrations
simultaneously rise and hence the reverse rate (rr)
increases. This continues until rr = rf.
