Volume 96 : November 2016
Results for 12th November
Thanks to everyone that supported the
Ladies teams, whilst they didn’t get the
results they wanted the performances
were vastly improved. The Men’s section
faired slightly better but there is still too
much red on the board, let’s aim for
some clean sweeps before Christmas and
with Race Night this Saturday please stick
around to support the other home
games, all fixtures are on the final page
of HawkTalk.
Men’s 1st XI
The Hawks entertained Addiscombe in a 9 goal thriller and stole the win to
maintain their undefeated home record. The game started with the home
side dominating possession and with a couple of chances they were unable
to convert, but a quick breakaway down the right flank saw the visitors
take the lead and despite more pressure and sustained possession from
the Hawks they were again caught napping at the back as Addiscombe took
a 2-0 lead. Hawks reacted in the best way possible, some slick passing
through midfield and some excellent movement of the ball, allowed Captain Shane Haughton to find an inch of space to squeeze out a reverse stick
shot to the bottom corner. Hawks continued to look the dominant side but
were unable to convert a plethora of chances and went into the break the
losing side. With Addiscombe having travelled with the bare 11 players, the home side knew their chances would come in the final quarter of
the match and the game plan was to keep attacking, moving the ball and
forcing the visitors to tire early. Unfortunately Addiscombe extended their
lead, capitalising on a loose pass in midfield and overloading the defence to
make it 3-1. Hawks rallied and unlike the week earlier they didn’t lose composure, recognising that a result was completely within their capabilities
the intensity was increased and Mark Gausden capitalised from close
range. It would however be Addiscombe that scored the 6 th goal of the
game, a penalty corner won and expertly dispatched with a bullet like drag
flick to the top left corner, leaving keeper Hannick no chance. At 4-2 down
the Hawks began their fight back and started to witness the away side tire,
along with the patience of the umpires as cards began to get shown for dissent, the visitors were at one point reduced to 9 men. This really appeared
to be the turning point as Shane Haughton was able to add another with a
near identical finish to his first and shortly after, forward Martin Delaney
turned his defender just outside of the circle and earned the team a Penalty Corner that was worked nicely with Ed Wildbore adding to his season’s
tally for 4-4. With under 5 minutes on the clock the game was being played
entirely in and around the Addiscombe goal and with the player advantage
still paying dividends the Hawks saw Player/Coach Mark Collins finish a
sweet move to take all 3 points. Next week they host local rivals Camberley
& Farnborough at The Nest.

Ladies 2nd XI
The Ladies 2nd XI have struggled a bit
this season but with a side of 13, dry
weather and a nice timed home game on
Saturday they felt that the omens were
good. They were paired against a Surbiton side that combined hard hitting old
school defenders with ridiculously young,
fit and quick forwards. The Hawks tried
hard with a guest appearance from Alice
Moxon at the back and Eleanor Larby
stepping into the centre midfield position
for the first time, leaving Roisin Ayling to
progress from left back to left wing. Although there was some good linking play,
unfortunately it seemed that Surbiton
had been practising because they nailed
three goals in the first half. At the half
time talk we resolved to keep working
hard for each other and try and get some
play in the oppositions circle. The second
half was much more promising with the
Hawks seeing the majority of possession
and much better attacking form but still
unfortunately no goals. With everyone
on the pitch working as hard as possible
tempers started to fray with two members of the Hawks side being reprimanded (one for trying to enlighten the
umpire as to his grievous error and the
other for refusing to stop swearing until
the opposition stopped “hacking through
our players”). We gave it everything we
had right until the final whistle and although we had a much better second
half (we only lost it 1-nil- yay) we couldn’t seem to find any goals of our own.
Onwards and upwards - the Ladies 2’s
are determined to smash a win this Saturday.
Men’s 2nd XI
Hawks began the game in a similar fashion to the travel arrangements
made by the Sunbury locals with no less than forty seven (47) Whatsapp
messages to decide, confirm and reconfirm which train and which carriage
to meet fellow team members on. This dallying crept in to the early stages
of the game. A lack of organisation meant Hawks struggled to deal with
Wanderers' deep defensive line of a couple of spritely fellows and two
portly full backs and were quickly on the back foot as flicks and long balls
down the line opened up the usually tight Hawks press. Hawks rallied, however as Nathan Rueben created space down the right and created two
good chances. Brothers Dowdeswell combined with the younger, hairier of
the two hitting the post, a chance he should have taken. Quickly Wanderers were back at it with a long ball resulting in a short corner which they
converted. After ten minutes of simple passing hockey though, Seb Hymas
pulled one back for the visitors with a trademark turn and shot. The opening exchanges of the second half suggested this game would be a tight affair however Louis Wright wriggled down the right side to thread a ball to
an unmarked Bryn James Lawler who tapped in from close range. Hawks
soaked up any pressure applied by Wanderers and won a short corner
which injector Mike Smith converted; a move straight off the training
ground. Seb Hymas was back in action again when he turned and shot having rolled a helpless defender - Hawks could smell victory. Both James 'JT'
Taylor and Mike Smith took ones for the team, the former polaxed by a
Wanderer and the latter wearing one on the hand from an errant cross.
Man of the match Smith was in action again as he hooked a Wanderers
drag flick on goal over fine leg and shortly after Damo Thompson collected
a loose ball at the far post and slammed home to complete the dominant
display. Hawks take on Old Reigatians away next weekend as they look to
make up ground on second placed Kenley.

Men’s 3rd XI
This week the Men's 3rd XI hosted top of
the league Old Cranleighans at Bishops
Wand, knowing we would be in for a very
tough game having played this lot twice
last season and having seen their record.
We talked about repeating our performance from the final game of last season
where we played in a belter of a game
that finished "Desmond at the Nest" to
send both teams up but knowing full well
we currently have a very different team.
The game started at a fast pace with the
Hawks side having to scrap hard for possession in the midfield and finding it hard
to stretch the OC’s defence because of
their high pressure game. The game toed
-and-froed with neither team able to
really dominate, decisions heavily contested and the game becoming increasingly ‘aggy’. The Hawks then played some
lovely hockey, a switch from right to left
let us burst up the wing into an attacking
position. After a half tackle the ball bobbled around at the top of the OC’s 25
meter line where Will Gray took control
of the situation, jinking past a tackle to
give himself half a yard to have a pop, he
duly did just pummelling an effort past
the keeper to find Ozzy on the backpost
to make sure. Clearly rattled by our lead,
the OC’s started to play some good, aggressive passing hockey around our circle
and, having withstood a torrent of pressure throughout the first half, Gut was
finally beaten by a crafty finish from their
centre forward.
Continued opposite....
Men’s 3rd XI continued....
Soon after we trailed after a superbly worked short corner routine from
this OC’s side full of nouse switching it back to the left slip, after a 1,2 between the man at the top of the D and the right slip, for an impressive slap
right into the bottom corner. At half time we were again content with our
performance but knowing full well the job was far from done. The Hawks
set up more compactly in the second half with the strikers dropping off and
Wrighty migrating to the middle. The OC’s side seemed panicky having so
much time on the ball at the back and then none at all in the midfield. This
led to numerous turnovers with the Hawks gaining possession and opportunities to attack started to appear. At this point the OC’s side decided they
didn't have the ability to play us off the park anymore so the game turned
nasty with the big, brutish OC’s men piling into the young Hawks players.
However we weren't going to go down without a fight and Wrighty, Ozzy
and most comically Henri all letting the opposition know we weren't going
to let them push us around. Sadly, having dominated the second half, the
Hawks switched off for one moment and the OC’s capitalised with the ball
bobbling under Wrighty's stick and past Khal for a simple finish and 3-1
leaving the Hawks a steep uphill climb to get anything out of the last 10
minutes. We gave it a fantastic go though, with balls flying just wide of
both posts as we had them well and truly under the thumb. In a rare release of pressure the OC’s gained a short corner with 5 minutes to go. Having defended the effort the Hawks broke with Wrighty finding Steve who
found Will Gray. Typical of the day he'd had Will made a great driving run
for 35 yards before finding Henri on the left hand side of the D to slot
home a clinical finish across the keeper in the composed style of someone
far his senior, but it's what we've began to anticipate from the "English
Xavi". After this we threw everything including the kitchen sink to try and
salvage a point, but sadly to no avail as they just hung on. An encouraging
performance but sadly another loss. Next week we travel to fellow strugglers Cheam to search of our first win of the season.

Ladies 4th XI
Another 10am start at The Nest for the
Ladies 4th XI. After putting last week’s
match into the dim and distant past &
never to be spoken of again, and feeling
fired up from an excellent training session with Conrad, we faced OC Vamps,
who tonked us 6-0 in a pre-season
friendly, but let us not dwell on that. We
welcome two new players – Alex, a forward and Robyn who plays in goal, freeing Nikki Hartley from a 10 year incarceration behind bars. We also welcomed
back Vicky Rich - first match of the season after injury (lord only knows what
she gets up to over summer). Heather
had so much fun last week (she was the
only one), she came back for more. Two
goalies outfield, what could go wrong.
The teams were quite evenly matched,
which was quite refreshing. With some
great encouragement from the sidelines,
both teams had shots on goal, but none
found the back of the net. Mia and Reece
worked well together on the right making
the OC’s defence work hard. Laura had a
great game in a new position of Left Half
and Robyn made some amazing saves.
Jana and Vicky were as usual, amazing in
defence. Thankfully having the 2 goalies
on the pitch was a good move, as Robyn
suffered an unfortunate injury in the second half (speedy recovery!) and Heather
padded up to take her place. The Hawks,
who were getting a bit tired, conceded a
goal in the 2nd half from a short corner. A
1-0 loss, but felt like a win to us. A great
match and great sideline support kept us
focussed. Next week is Richmond away!
Under 12 Boys
The mighty and ever reliable Sunbury & Walton Hawks were invited to
bring a team along to Guildford at the last minute, so thanks to the players
who turned out and apologies to the two who we asked to be on stand-by
so we didn’t have too many players on the sidelines. The squad started
against Guildford Lions, possibly the strongest they faced, personified by a
roofer of a shot from the edge of the D that was too high even for keeper
Dan Buckley as it nestled in the top corner. Hawks worked their way back
into the game; however they were undone by a Guildford breakaway for a
2nd goal. The game ended 2-0. The 2nd game was against Guildford Panthers. The Hawks were a little complacent thinking they must be against
weaker players. A similar shot from the top of the D into the roof of the
goal proved this was no easy game. Again Hawks dug deep, but couldn’t
find a goal. 1-0. The final match was against a Surbiton team of unknown
strength. Hawks were finally passing the ball around fluidly and quickly
found themselves 1-0 up. However, again not learning from their earlier
game and with players too high up the pitch, Surbiton broke and were able
to find their way into the D and past keeper Dan for 1-1. Hawks had already
missed a couple of chances before the equaliser and missed a couple more
before securing the win with an emphatic short-corner strike from the top
of the D. The team learnt how to play through the tournament and started
doing more of what the coach asked of them and were therefore rewarded
with numerous chances on goal, thanks to quick and incisive passing from
defence through to attack. The remaining criticism was therefore a little
too much selfishness by the senior players in the team that allowed the opposition to pick off the ball far too much and reverse the play; leaving us
back-peddling frantically. A similar thing in front of goal was responsible for
numerous saves and misses when we could have passed the ball past the
keeper 3 or 4 times instead. A good lesson and a good finish.

Ladies 3rd XI
Richmond away normally means we play
against a gaggle of leggy blonde 16 year
olds with lots of skills but little match experience. Not this year and it was an
older, more vociferous, useful team that
greeted us. No worries we thought - we
can do this as we had 14 players and a
more youthful look to the squad this
week. Unfortunately it just didn't come
together. The situation wasn't helped by
the opposition providing two people with
bobble hats and whistles who stood at
either end of the pitch. Unfortunately the
message that the whistle might occasionally need to be blown was not passed on.
Did it make a difference to the score? No
(well apart from the last goal so let's call
it a 3-0 loss, not 4-0). One early goal from
Richmond showed they were terrier-like
in attack, even if not that skilful and as a
defence we tightened up but not enough
to stop 3 more getting past us. Upfront
we had chances that went untaken. Individually, we had the skills in the right
place on the pitch; Nicky Lovegrove moving up to left half with some great runs
and passes, Fiona back sweeping; Rachel
Foreman and Abby upfront with Michelle, Steph and Heidi, playing only her
second adult game, having a stormer at
right back. But it's the team play element
that now needs the work. We know this
will come as we play together more so
whilst disappointed we look forward to
Surbiton next week.
