Who is My Neighbour?
by Henri Nouwen
“Love your neighbour as yourself” the Gospel says (Matthew
22:38). BUT WHO IS MY NEIGHBOR? We often respond to that
question by saying: “My neighbours are all the people I am
living with on this earth, especially the sick, the hungry, the
dying, and all who are in need.” But this is not what Jesus says.
When Jesus tells the story of the good Samaritan (see Luke
10:29-37) to answer the question “Who is my neighbour?” he
ends by asking: “Which, … do you think, proved himself a
neighbor to the man who fell into the bandits’ hands?”
The neighbour, Jesus makes clear, is not the poor man laying
on the side of the street, stripped, beaten, and half dead, but
the Samaritan who crossed the road, “bandaged his wounds,
pouring oil and wine on them, … lifted him onto his own mount
and took him to an inn and looked after him.” MY NEIGHBOUR
IS THE ONE WHO CROSSES THE ROAD FOR ME!
Who is my neighbour?
“We become neighbours when we are willing to
cross the road for one another.” H. Nouwen

System Faith Goal – “What”
To become a more welcoming, inclusive, safe,
Christ–centered community inspiring service and
engagement.
System Faith Goal – “How”
“By becoming neighbours willing to cross the road
for one another.”
Moving forward, can our Belonging Strategy be
described as our Crossing the Road Strategy?
System Goals
Promoting faith formation, student achievement and well-being by:

Becoming a more welcoming, inclusive, safe, Christ–centered
community inspiring service and engagement.

Increasing the percentage of students achieving at or above the
provincial standard with specific emphasis on students with
behavioural or learning disabilities and students enrolled in applied
courses.

Ensuring successful transitions of all students through engagement of
students, staff, families, parishes and communities.

Supporting implementation of teaching practices enabled by
technology to address learning needs and engage students.
Leading Implementation with
Clarity and Precision
Our Board Improvement Plan / School
Improvement Plan must be understood by those
who will implement it
We need to translate our plan into clear, visible
objectives
We need to communicate our plan clearly,
concisely and often
Leading Implementation by Listening
We move people forward by listening to where
they are at first.


Focus on the Learner
◦ Address the learning needs of a particular set of students with a particular set of
challenges. Root cause analysis

Continuous Process of Inquiry
◦ For these students undertake the process of understanding ‘why’

Targeted Intervention
◦ Use of documentation to determine students’ assets, track results and identify next
steps

Responsive Teaching
◦ Using a range of strategies to respond to the needs of students
The primary site for professional learning is the classroom to address the learning
needs of a particular set of students with a particular set of challenges.
System/ School Improvement Learning
Cycles (SILC1 + SILC2)
Teachers – consider the specific things the students need to
learn to achieve greater success
Principals – consider the specific things the teachers need to
learn in order to meet their students’ learning needs
Senior Team – considers the specific things principals need to
learn to meet the needs of their teachers
*All considered in light of the local context to address the
learning needs of a particular set of students with a particular
set of challenges.
Practice, Reflection and Refinement
Practice of Plan & Reflect; Act & Reflect; Observe and Reflect
◦ What did we do? Implementation of the strategy.
Reflection on the Overall Impact
◦ What worked? How do we know?
◦ Under what conditions did our practice produce results?
Refinement of our Strategy
◦ If it is not working, why?
◦ What is our next best move?
Ensure that everyone stays focused on these priorities and fully commits to
them through practice, reflection and refinement.
