Board of Trustees September 26, 2016 Inspired by Christ. Learning Together. Serving Together. Welcome . . . “We have been waiting for you!” World Festival of Children’s Theatre June 2016 Stratford Who is My Neighbour? by Henri Nouwen “Love your neighbour as yourself” the Gospel says (Matthew 22:38). BUT WHO IS MY NEIGHBOR? We often respond to that question by saying: “My neighbours are all the people I am living with on this earth, especially the sick, the hungry, the dying, and all who are in need.” But this is not what Jesus says. When Jesus tells the story of the good Samaritan (see Luke 10:29-37) to answer the question “Who is my neighbour?” he ends by asking: “Which, … do you think, proved himself a neighbor to the man who fell into the bandits’ hands?” The neighbour, Jesus makes clear, is not the poor man laying on the side of the street, stripped, beaten, and half dead, but the Samaritan who crossed the road, “bandaged his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them, … lifted him onto his own mount and took him to an inn and looked after him.” MY NEIGHBOUR IS THE ONE WHO CROSSES THE ROAD FOR ME! Who is my neighbour? “We become neighbours when we are willing to cross the road for one another.” H. Nouwen Who is my neighbour? System Faith Goal – “What” To become a more welcoming, inclusive, safe, Christ–centered community inspiring service and engagement. Students Teachers Principals Senior Team “Seek first to understand then to be understood.” (Covey) SWST meets SPST Research Pilot & Visit with East Coast Educators SWST – understanding student learning needs SPST – responding to student learning needs How do we use what we learned from the Student Work Study approach to learn more about students identified with learning disabilities and behavior exceptionalities and respond to their needs? How do we use what we learned from our collaboration with educators in New Brunswick? Our LDCSB Renewed Math Strategy Informed by our SWST/SPST, SSSI Research and Visit with New Brunswick Educators The Provincial Renewed Math Strategy Builds upon whole-school (elementary) and wholedepartment (secondary) professional learning approaches to support improvement classroom embedded professional learning time to examine student work examining the needs of the whole child considering teaching strategies knowing the student and student learning through the lens of mathematics assessing impact on student learning and documenting the results Our Renewed Math Strategy System Improvement Learning Cycle (SILC1) Lead Math Teachers (Primary or Applied) + SPST + Principal TEAM CI = Classroom Teacher(s) + SPST + Principal School Improvement Learning Cycle (SILC2) Focus on the Learner ◦ Address the learning needs of a particular set of students with a particular set of challenges. Root cause analysis Continuous Process of Inquiry ◦ For these students undertake the process of understanding ‘why’ Targeted Intervention ◦ Use of documentation to determine students’ assets, track results and identify next steps Responsive Teaching ◦ Using a range of strategies to respond to the needs of students The primary site for professional learning is the classroom to address the learning needs of a particular set of students with a particular set of challenges. System/ School Improvement Learning Cycles (SILC1 + SILC2) Teachers – consider the specific things the students need to learn to achieve greater success Principals – consider the specific things the teachers need to learn in order to meet their students’ learning needs Senior Team – considers the specific things principals need to learn to meet the needs of their teachers *All considered in light of the local context to address the learning needs of a particular set of students with a particular set of challenges. Practice, Reflection and Refinement Practice of Plan & Reflect; Act & Reflect; Observe and Reflect ◦ What did we do? Implementation of the strategy. Reflection on the Overall Impact ◦ What worked? How do we know? ◦ Under what conditions did our practice produce results? Refinement of our Strategy ◦ If it is not working, why? ◦ What is our next best move? Ensure that everyone stays focused on these priorities and fully commits to them through practice, reflection and refinement. M.
