Ahead of the Game: Achieving Best Practices in Youth Concussions

Course Description
This state-of-the-art conference hosts nationally
recognized experts, Drs. Gerry Gioia and Kevin Guskiewicz
who will present up-to-date research, assessment tools
and best practices regarding assessment, evaluation and
return to play protocols for concussed youth. Designed
for medical professionals including physicians, physician
assistants, nurse practioners, neuropsychologists, therapists,
athletic trainers, school nurses, school personnel and
others, this important program addresses pathophysiology,
epidemiology, biomechanics, evaluation tools, areas
of research and return-to-play decision making.
Course Objectives
• Describe best practices for concussion diagnosis, return-to-play clearance and management of recurrent concussions.
• Describe a mode of active intervention to assist post-concussive recovery including metabolic factors,
conditions and targets for cognitive/academic, emotional and physical symptomatology.
• Review the latest imaging techniques.

The Concussed Student and Implications for Schools and Physicians

Course Description
The afternoon program targets physicians, school
administrators and staff, athletic directors, coaches,
school nurses, athletic trainers and professionals
functioning as part of a concussion team. The focus is
on helping districts comply with existing state law and
manage the concussed student in the school setting.
Course Objectives
• Describe Max’s and Jenna’s Law as it applies to school districts.
• Describe current research, identifying concussions on the field/at play
and protocols for restriction of play and return-to-play.
• Discuss school options and protocols for return to academics and
accommodations for prolonged post-concussive symptoms.
• Discuss physician interaction and communication with schools and coaches
regarding return-to-play and long term management of concussion.

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies
of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint providership of St.
Charles Health System and TCF (The Center Foundation). St. Charles Health System is accredited by
the Oregon Medical Association to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Conference Chair
VIVIANE UGALDE, MD, PMR, attended medical school at the University of Nevada and completed her residency training
at the University of California Davis. She spent 11 years as an academic physician at UC Davis with emphasis on sports
medicine, electro diagnostics and spinal cord injury. Dr. Ugalde provided coverage at sporting events including Sacramento and
Reno volleyball festivals, the Olympic Track and Field trials, 2000 and the U.S. Track and Field Nationals 1995. She was team
physician for UC Davis and WNBA Sacramento Monarchs, the Sacramento Ballet and Ruth Rosenberg Modern Dance Ensemble.
Dr. Ugalde currently practices at The Center: Orthopedic & Neurosurgical Care & Research, is the Director of St. Charles
Outpatient Rehabilitation, sits on the TCF Board of Directors and functions as the TCF Concussion Program Medical Director.
Faculty
GERRY GIOIA, MD, PHD, is a pediatric neuropsychologist and chief of the Division of Pediatric Neuropsychology at
Children’s National Medical Center where he directs the Safe Concussion Outcome, Recovery & Education (SCORE) Program.
An Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Psychiatry at George Washington University School of Medicine, he directs the
Neurobehavioral Core Research Laboratories for Children’s National’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute. Dr. Gioia
has been the principal investigator of several CDC funded pediatric research studies and works closely with the CDC on their
“Heads Up” educational programs. He consults with the national governing organizations of hockey, lacrosse, football, rugby and
soccer related to concussion management. Dr. Gioia is currently on the American Academy of Neurology Sports Concussion
Guidelines Author panel and was a keynote presenter at the May 2014 White House Summit on Youth Concussions.
KEVIN GUSKIEWICZ, PHD, ATC, FACSM, is the Kernan Distinguished Professor and founding director of the Matthew
Gfeller Sport-Related Traumatic Brain Injury Research Center and the Center for the Study of Retired Athletes at Chapel Hill,
University of North Carolina. Over the past 20 years, Dr. Guskiewicz’s research has focused on sport-related concussion and
investigating the effect of sports-related concussion on balance and neuropsychological function, the biomechanics of sports
concussion and the long-term neurological effects of concussion and sub-concussive impacts in retired professional football
players. In 2010, he was named to the NCAA Concussion Committee and the NFL’s Head, Neck and Spine Committee. Dr.
Guskiewicz received the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship in 2011.
JOHN BARRESSE, ATC, MS, holds a masters degree in sports medicine from the University of Oregon. He is also an
American Heart Association BLS instructor and certified orthopedic technician. As an Athletic Trainer for the past 8 years, Mr.
Barresse specializes in high school sports medicine and is currently assigned to Sisters High School where is supports young
athletes in injury prevention strategies, injury identification and treatment and sport illness management. He is the TCF (The
Center Foundation) Concussion Program Coordinator.
SUE HAYES, MA-SPEECH PATHOLOGY, is the administrator of special programs for Central Oregon Regional Programs.
As a special education teacher, she has been involved in traumatic brain injury study and interventions since 1993. She has
participated in state and regional committee work to design service systems and teacher coaching approaches. Ms. Hayes coauthored the TBI Toolkit for Transition of Individuals with TBI currently available on the Oregon Center on Brain Injury Research
and Training website and presented to the Oregon and Pennsylvania Brain Injury Associations. Currently, she supervises
services for deaf and hard of hearing, autism, vision and TBI.
Faculty
SONDRA MARSHALL, PHD, a licensed psychologist practicing at St. Charles Health System, completed her doctorate
at the University of Utah. Dr. Marshall specializes in pediatric neuropsychological services and has been instrumental in
developing the Central Oregon youth concussion model of care. She is director of a multi-disciplinary specialized assessment
clinic for children and youth ages 0-26 with complex neurodevelopment problems such as learning disabilities, attention
deficit, autism spectrum disorders, fetal alcohol syndromes, disruptive disorders and emotional disturbances. Dr. Marshall
serves as Behavioral Health Consultant at Central Oregon Pediatric Associates, the largest pediatric clinic in Oregon, and
offers consultation to providers, patients and their family for a broad range of medical, behavioral and mental health issues.
DR. FRAN MCCABE, MD, is an attending physician in the Emergency Department at St. Charles Health
Care in Bend, Oregon. A colonel in the USAF Reserves, she serves as an emergency physician/flight surgeon
and international health specialist. She is an Assistant Clinical Professor for the Uniformed Services University
of Health Sciences and has a special interest in world health and trauma. Dr. McCabe is certified to instruct
Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advance Life Support and Advanced Trauma Life Support.
KIRSTEN SCOTT, DOCTOR OF OPTOMETRY, is board certified in optometry and currently practices at Integrated
Eye Care in Bend, Oregon. She is the department head for Ancillary Services, Branch Health Clinic, Paris Island, South
Carolina and department head of Optometry at Beaufort Naval Hospital in Beaufort, South Carolina. Before beginning
her practice in Bend, Dr. Scott served as an optometrist for the military. She has a special interest in sports vision
issues and traumatic brain injury and the use of ocular therapies to assist in concussion identification and recovery.
LAURIE SHANK, PSYD, received her doctorate in psychology from Pacific University in Hillsboro, Oregon and currently
practices at St. Charles Behavioral Health providing pediatric psychological and neuropsychological services. These include
outpatient neuropsychological assessments, developmental evaluations and autism specific assessments for infants, children
and young adults. Dr. Shank provides outpatient concussion assessment and management services as well. Her practicum
experiences include Doernbacher Children’s Hospital and Oregon Health Sciences University. She has specialty training
in child autism and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. Dr. Shank has published multiple articles relating to child autism.
KAREN WALZ, PT, MA, OCS, COMP, FAAOMPT is currently working on a doctorate through the University of Montana. As
a physical therapist practicing at Therapeutic Associates, Inc. in Bend, Oregon, Karen experienced an advanced curriculum in
musculoskeletal and neuromuscular dysfunction through Stanford University in her Masters of Arts program. As the Director of
the Occupational Rehabilitation program she developed and implemented clinics on injury management and injury prevention.
She is a member of the Work Injury Management Association of Oregon and the American Physical Therapy Association.
