PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
The Central Algoma Exhibition, will be celebrating it’s 131st year of existence. I would like
to say a special “Thanks” to everyone who contributes to this family oriented weekend of fun
and hard work. We, The Bruce Mines Agricultural Society, and the many volunteers, hope
your Family enjoys what we have to offer.
Fresh ideas are always welcome. Please look for our new 3 year Prize Book at the Fair.

Competitors will guide their alpaca through a prescribed course of obstacles of varying

To qualify for Bernardin prizes, all winning competition entries – home canned foods – must
have been submitted in mason jars with properly sealed, two-piece metal SNAP Lids. (Regular
gold BERNARDIN SNAP Lids and colourful Bernardin Collection Elite SNAP Lids are equally
acceptable for competition. Unsealed jars, items with lug caps or wax seals are unacceptable.
Mason jars are specifically designed for home canning.)

Contest is open to youth ages 10 to 15 years (as of December 31 of current year)
One class only.
Number of cookies to be shown at local Fair, to be determined by each individual Fair.
The winner from each Fair will be eligible to enter the District Competition.
Prize money at District Comp. will be paid by District.
It is recommended that the District competition follow the guidelines for the Provincial
competition and are:
 District entry must consist of 8 cookies displayed on a firm, disposable plate.
 Cookies must be no larger than 3” in diameter and no smaller than 2” & be plain
chocolate chip cookies with no nuts.
 Entries must be tagged with the exhibitor’s name, address & District represented
using the entry tag provided.
 Cookies will be judged according to the OAAS Homecraft Judging Standards.

Annual Machine Quilted Quilt/Wall Hanging Competition

Eligibility, Rules & Regulations
General Conditions
- Quilt/Wall Hanging must be solely made and machine quilted by the exhibitor, exhibited and
judged at a local Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies (OAAS) Fair to be eligible for
this competition.
- Quilt/Wall Hanging to be measured on the perimeter. Total perimeter to be a minimum of
192” (480 cm). Note the article can be square, rectangular, round, etc.
- Judging will occur at local fairs and District levels. A Provincial Grand Champion Machine
Quilted Q/WH will be selected at the Annual Convention of OAAS.
- Upon making an entry into the OAAS Machine Quilting Competition, the Exhibitor agrees to
participate in any related promotional activities.
- The winning OAAS Machine Quilted Q/WH will not be eligible to compete in any future
District and/or OAAS Provincial competition.
- The winner’s name to be displayed at the Fair on sign provided by OAAS.
- The Quilt/Wall Hanging must not be quilted using a long arm machine and must be
machine-quilted by the exhibitor and have visible machine quilting.
Local Fair Competitions
- Each local Fair is entitled to send only one Grand Champion Machine-quilted Q/WH, judged
best of show of all eligible machine-quilted Quilts/Wall Hangings, to the District Competition.
OR
If any entry wins Grand Champion or Best of Show of all Machine Quilted Q/WHs, at more than one
Fair, the other Fairs at which this item was entered and won, should enter their Reserve Champion or
Second Best of Show of eligible Machine-quilted quilt/wall hanging in the District Competition.
NOTE: If an Exhibitor wins Grand Champion or Best of Show of all eligible Machine-Quilted classes
at other than his/her own Fair, or at more than one Fair, the Exhibitor must consider the Agricultural
Society nearest his/her home address as the one from which the Q/WH will be sent to District Meeting.



An Exhibitor who wins more than one Best of Show title with a different machine-quilted Q/WH at
different Fairs, shall be entitled to enter each winning Q/WH to compete at the District Competition.
Local Homecraft Divisions are requested to judge a Grand Champion or Best of Show of all
eligible Machine-Quilted Q/WHs as well as Reserve Champion or Second Best of Show of
eligible Machine-quilted Quilts/Wall Hangings.
The Grand Champion and the Reserve Grand Champion are judged from all first and second prize
eligible Q/Whs.
District Competitions
 Judging at the District Competitions will be the responsibility of each OAAS District.
 The first place winning machine-quilted Q/WH from the District Competition is eligible to enter the
OAAS Championship Machine Quilting Competition at the Annual Convention. In cases where the
winner of the District First Prize Machine-quilted Q/WH decides not to enter the Final
Championship Competition, the Second Prize Q/WH winner at the District Competition, will be
eligible.
Ribbons will be awarded at District Level for 1st, 2nd & 3rd prize machine-quilted quilt/wall
hangings.
Annual Hand-Quilted Championship Quilt Competition
Eligibility, Rules & Regulations
General Conditions
- Entries must be solely made and hand quilted by the exhibitor, exhibited and judged at a local
Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies (OAAS) Fair to be eligible for this competition.
- Entry quilts must be a minimum of 324” (823 cm) smaller quilts will not be eligible to proceed
to the next levels of competition.)
- Judging will occur at local fairs and District levels. A Provincial Grand Champion Quilt will be
selected at the Annual OAAS Convention.
Upon making an entry into the OAAS Quilt Competition, the Exhibitor agrees to participate in any
promotional activities related to the competition.

The winning OAAS Champion Quilt will not be eligible to compete in any future District and/or
Convention OAAS competition.
The winner’s name and pattern, to be displayed at the Fair on sign provided by OAAS.
Local Fair Competitions
- Each local Fair is entitled to send only the Grand Champion Quilt, judged the best of show of
all eligible hand quilted quilts to the District Competition.
OR
If any entry wins Grand Champion or Best of all Eligible Quilts at more than one Fair, the other Fairs
at which this Quilt was entered and won, should enter their Reserve Champion or Second Best of Show
Of All Classes quilt in the District Competition.
NOTE: If an Exhibitor wins Grand Champion or Best of Show of all eligible quilts at other than

The loaf of bread must be solely made by the person entering the competition.
The entrant must have won the 60% Whole Wheat Bread competition at the local Fair/Exhibition
to be eligible to enter the District Competition.
The entrant must have won the District Competition to be eligible to enter the Ontario
Association of Agricultural Societies competition at the convention February 2012. The
convention winner will become the (OAAS) Ontario Bread Baker Champion for the year. If the
District winner is unable to send a loaf to convention, the 2nd prize district winner is acceptable.
Pan size: minimum– 8” x 4” x 2.5” (20 x 10 x 7cm)
maximum– 9” x 5” x 3” (23 x 13 x 7.5cm)
A full loaf of 60% Whole Wheat Bread is required.
District Winners must send to the committee by January 15, 2011– recipe for entry on card
provided and signed “consent to publish” form.
Exhibit must be in a clean, clear plastic bag, tagged with the exhibitor’s name, address and
District represented, using the entry tag provided.
Judging will be according to OAAS Homecraft Judging Standards for 60% Whole Wheat Bread.
Provincial Prize Money – 1st - $50.00, 2nd - $30.00, 3rd - $20.00

Country Fair Baking (C.F.B.) Contest
Rules & Regulations

All entrants into the contests must submit entries that were made using the sponsor’s product.
A product label must accompany each entry, as proof of purchase. ACH Foods require proof
of purchase from either Mazola Corn Oil or Bee Hive Corn Syrup.
All entries will be judged on appearance, texture, creativity of recipe and presentation.
Decision of the fair judge(s) will be final.
Winner’s name & address must be submitted with each entry.
All first place winners must submit recipe, proof of purchase, photograph and signed release
form, giving permission to the sponsors for use of the winners name, recipe and/or photograph in
any other advertising or publicity without payment. Secretary has release forms.
The fairs will send to C.F.B. the signed release forms, recipes and photo for the first place
winners along with a list of all the names and addresses for 2nd and 3rd place winners, where
applicable.
C.F.B. contests will reimburse each fair for cash winnings, up to a maximum of $80.00 per fair, upon
receipt of winner’s signed declaration form from fair convenor. C.F.B. reserves the right to substitute
gift prizes for a cash prize equivalent of $10.00 for first place, $6.00 for second place and $4.00 for third
place. The fair is responsible for distribution of prizes to individual winners.
National contest prizes to be sent to the winner.
Gift prizes, store coupons, banners, prize ribbons and other promotional give-a-ways will be
sent two weeks prior to the start of the fair in our fair contest kit. All submissions for reimbursement must be at C.F.B. by November 30, 2011.

District winners are eligible to enter the Provincial Competition.

4. Dimemsions: 42” wide x 48” high x 36” deep (107cm wide x 123cm high or 92cm
deep).
5. Drapes, overhangs, etc. will be considered as part of the dimensions.
6. Pre-registration of display is necessary as space is limited and will be assigned.

RULES & GUIDELINES TO FOLLOW:
1. Competion is open to each and every Agricultural Society.
2. Each Society may submit 1-CD disc with all images downloaded-identifying each image by the
Category # only, with prints of each image.
3. 3-All prints – 4” x 6” or 5” x 7” are to be mounted on Bristol board (any colour) with approx. 1”
border with category # & Fair name on back.
4. NO PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHERS permitted.
5. Absolutely NO DIGITAL IMAGE ENHANCING allowed.
6. Please do not use tape on CD’s or photographs.
7. Judging will be done by a committee approved by the chairman.
8. Prize winning images will be shown and awards presented at the 2012 OAAS Convention.
9. Prize money will be mailed to the winners following the convention.
10. ALL 1st place images will become property of the OAAS—Remaining entries will be returned upon
request.

CORN BREAD
3 Eggs, beaten
½ cup yellow cornmeal
1 cup (skim) milk
½ cup sugar or Splenda
½ cup margarine, melted ½ tsp. baking powder
2 cups Bisquick
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease an 8 – inch square pan.
Blend eggs, milk and melted margarine. Sift sugar and baking powder together into a separate bowl. Stir in
cornmeal and mix well. Add cornmeal mixture & Bisquick to the egg-milk mixture. Using a wooden spoon, stir
only until blended.
Pour batter into greased pan and bake for 30 minutes.
CHICKEN CORN CHOWDER
½ pound bacon, cut up
½ cup onion, chopped
½ cup celery, chopped
4 cups frozen corn
4 cups of half & half cream
2 Tbls vegetable oil
½ tsp black pepper
2 Tbls flour
1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut in 1” cubes
1 can (16 oz) tiny whole potatoes, drained & diced
¼ cup red bell peppers, chopped
In large soup pot, cook bacon until crisp. Drain all but 2 Tbls of fat. Add chicken & cook over medium heat until
no longer pink, about 6 minutes. Add onion, celery & peppers & sauté for 2 minutes. Stir in flour, cook 1 minute.
Stir in half & half. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly.
Puree 2 cups of corn in blender. Add to pot. Heat to boiling, stirring constantly for 1 minute. Stir in pepper,
potatoes & remaining corn.
Heat through. Stir in bacon and serve immediately.
CARMEL CORN
16 cups of unsalted, popped corn
½ cup corn syrup
1 cup butter
2 cups brown sugar
1 tsp salt
½ tsp baking soda
Boil brown sugar, syrup, butter and salt for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in baking soda.
Pour over popped corn and stir well. Bake on cookie sheet at 250 degrees F, for 45 minutes.
CORN FLAKE COOKIES
150 g plain flour
1 tsp baking powder
50 g corn flour
100 g coarsely crushed corn flakes
100 g caster (super fine) sugar
200 g butter
1 tsp vanilla
100 g roasted coconut
1 egg
Red cherries
Sift together the plain flour, corn flour & baking powder. Stir in roasted coconut, mix well & set aside. Cream
butter, sugar & vanilla until fluffy. Add egg & beat well.
Fold in flour mixture and mix well until forms soft dough. Scoop a teaspoon of mixture & shape into balls. Roll
each in crushed corn flakes and decorate with cherries. Bake on greased cookie sheets, in 180 degree C oven for
15-20 minutes until golden brown. Cool 20 minutes. Makes 72.
