Sub skills of Reading
Skimming
Reading for gist
Scanning
Reading for specific information
Inference
Guessing word meaning .
Scanning
Reading for specific information
Scanning
often
comes
before
skimming. For example, scanning
can be used to determine if a
resource has the information you are
looking for. Once the resource is
scanned, it can then be skimmed for
more detail.
Scanning is a reading technic that
one uses to find specific information
without reading the whole text. It
involves looking down and around a
page quickly and efficiently searching
for important words, facts or phrases
to find specific information.
When scanning a text, one should
use peripheral(marginal) vision and
shouldn’t focus only on the logical
flow of the text.
How you scan a text quickly ?
For scanning you can use 5w’sH
method and underline the informative
words of the text.
5w’sH mean
WHO
is used for
PERSON
WHAT is for OBJECT/ANIMAL/BABY
WHERE is for PLACE
WHEN is for
WHY is for
Time/period
Cause/reason
HOW is for Quantity/Prosess
Lutfur (who) is eight years (how) old and
lived in Dhaka (where). He comes from
Tongi (where). He has a brother who
works as a tempo helper. (what) He
came with his father, brother and
grandmother to Dhaka in search of
living.(Why) His father works as a
rickshaw puller (Who/what) and mother
as a domestic worker.(what/Who) Lutfur
collects poly bags, scrap paper and
other
materials (what) from the
Motijheel (where) area and sells
them at a shop (where) for taka 5
to 10 a bag. He earns taka 20 to
50 (how) a day which he gives to
his mother. Lutfur and his family
live in a slum (where) near to
Kamlapur railway station. (where)
Problems with students’ reading strategies
Many students believe that they
need to understand every word in
order to understand the text. They
will read the text very slowly
,thinking about each word. They will
translate each word as they go and
write the translation above the
English. Coming across a word they
don’t recognize
,they will either look in the
dictionary or stop because they
don’t think they can understand
the sentence. They need to be
taught that it is more effective to
look for phrase or word group
rather than individual words.
Skimming
Skimming is a reading technique that provides
understanding of the whole text without reading it
from word to word. It involves discovering the main
ideas of a text by reading first and last paragraphs.
The handsome knight mounted
his horse, and galloped off to
save the beautiful princess. On
and on, over mountains and
valleys, until his galloping
house was exhausted. At last
he dismounted. Where was the
dragon?
What is the text about?
Inference
A village girl was walking along the
snerd with a roggle of milk on her
head. She began saying to herself ,
the money for which I will sell this
milk will make enough money to
increase my trund of eggs to three
hundred. These eggs will produce the
same number of chickens and I will be
able to sell the chickens for a large
wunk of money…..
Inference means,
Guessing the meaning
Step 01” We had a whoosis
What is whoosis?
(1) a tropical fish
(2) an egg beater

step 02: We had a whoosis but handle

(3) a leather suitcase
Step03:We had a whoosis but handle
broke when we tried to beat an egg
(1) a tropical fish
(2) an egg beater
(3) a leather suitcase
“The ball hit her on the
noggin”. The word “noggin”
should be unfamiliar. But
even without understanding
it , you should know that
the girl was hit with a ball .
You can guess that “the
noggin “ is some part of the
body.
Some Tips
To make easier a text reading
students can follow the technics
Underline important, key words/ sentences.
Highlight words or whole paragraphs
Take notes in a notebook
Draw visual representations of the text
like charts and graphs etc.
Keep some informative key words for
making a new passage like the main
passage.
Make a game by connecting some
sentences & write down.
