A. GET THE SOFTWARE Download OverDrive This is the software you will be using to access digital audiobooks from the library system for computers, MP3 players, and older generation iPods. If you want to listen to audiobooks using Windows 8 or a mobile touchscreen device (e.g., a tablet, smartphone or iPod Touch), you can refer to our Apple, Android, and Windows 8 device guides. 1. OverDrive Use a browser on your laptop or computer (e.g., Safari, Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox) to go to: http://app.overdrive.com/ 2. Download Click the Download button and scroll to find and click on the appropriate choice for your operating system (e.g., Windows Desktop). B. FIND AN AUDIOBOOK C. BORROW IT! 1. Library To Go 1. Borrow To get to the Library To Go catalog, browse to http://downloads.bclibrary.ca/ 2. Sign In Click on Sign In or Account in the top right corner of the page. Use the drop-down menu to find Thompson-Nicola Regional Library, click on Go, and then enter your number from the back of your library card. 3. Browse You can look through the front page to see recent Hot Titles and New Arrivals. Audiobooks have a headphones icon in the upper right corner. Dark headphones icons are a sign that the title is available. Faded icons show titles that are already checked out and can be placed on hold. Point at the book cover with your mouse, and then click on “More” to read additional information about each item. 4. Search Enter a title or author into the search field in the top right corner, and click on the magnifying glass to search. Or click Advanced Search for more options. 5. Limit to Available 3. Install Find the installer that you’ve downloaded and run it install the OverDrive desktop app. The process will vary slightly from browser to browser (as well as Mac vs Windows). Once you have found a book you are interested in, hover your mouse pointer over the cover to bring up the individual book options. Click on Borrow. To see what is immediately available in your favourite genre, use Advanced Search. Leave most of the form blank, choosing a just a Subject and a Format (most devices use MP3). Just above the Search button at the bottom of the form, tap to check this box and then hit Search. 2. Online Bookshelf Once you have borrowed the item, it will move to your online Bookshelf. From there you click on Download. This will download the title to your computer. Some browsers will give you the option to open the file right away in OverDrive, others will save it to your Desktop, or Downloads folder, or give you the choice of where to save. If the file does not open in OverDrive automatically, find where it was saved and doubleclick the file to open it. 3. Quick Returns If you accidentally checked out a title, you can return it right away from your online Bookshelf by clicking on the Return Title button (see above). Once you download an MP3 audiobook, it has to be returned using OverDrive. (WMA titles cannot be returned early once they have been downloaded). D. PLAY & TRANSFER 1. Ready To Play Once the audiobook has been downloaded, you can play it right away on your computer. Select the title, and click on Play in OverDrive to start listening. If you would like to transfer the book to an MP3 player or classic iPod, follow the instructions below (you will need iTunes* installed if using an iPod): 2. Connect E. RETURN/DELETE Returning Audiobooks MP3s can be returned early. Open OverDrive, select the title you want to return, and click the Delete button. A window will pop up. Click the Return/Delete button. (For tablets, smartphones and iPod Touch, please refer to our Apple and Android guides.) (WMAs can be deleted, but will remain in your online Bookshelf at Library To Go until they expire.) Connect the player to the computer. If OverDrive is not already running, open it and select the audiobook you want to transfer. 3. Transfer Click the Transfer button to start the wizard and then click the Next button. Choose your device from the Player dropdown list and click Next. The book will start to transfer to your device. Click the Finish button with the process is complete. You can now disconnect your device and listen.
