Events for Children
Membership
Enhanced Sports Facilities It
is intended to resurface the two
tennis courts that are situated just
past the clubhouse. This will create
not only an all-weather surface for
tennis, but will also enable netball
to be played throughout the year.
It will equally provide a facility
that can be used by local schools
and clubs. The new surfaces will
also enable community use of
the courts for festivals and other
events.
Wildlife Our Black Swans have
settled in the Park and have been
very popular. If you feed them
bread then please use brown bread
as white bread can cause them to
have gout. They also like mixed
corn. Unfortunately, last year the
female swan swallowed a fishing
line. Thanks to Fivelands Veterinary
Service it was successfully removed
with no damage to the swan. The
gulls that have recently taken up
residence can cause a nuisance
but, evidently, these birds seem to
have settled in all parks in the area.

equipment. During the year a
Trim Trail will be installed with a
number of exercise stations around
the park. For runners, routes will
be measured with distance signs at
regular intervals. The trail will have
equipment that will also be suitable
for children.
No more wet and muddy shoes
A new walkway has been installed
near the Bog garden which is
situated at the bottom of the Park.
DURING
THE YEAR A
TRIM TRAIL
WILL BE

AROUND THE
PARK.
Dogs A small percentage of dog
owners do not control their dogs
appropriately. Every year this results
in some serious incidents not only
with wildfowl, but also with other
dogs and even members of the Park.
Remember, you are responsible for
your dog which should always be
under control even when off the lead.

NEWSLETTER // 2015
Welcome
M
oseley is a fantastic part of
Birmingham with its farmers
and arts markets, but what makes
it particularly special and unique is
having at its centre, the Park and
Pool. This historic park, situated
as it is only a short distance
from the city centre, is run by a
charitable trust whose terms of
reference ensure that it can never
be sold. It is a green tranquil oasis
that is a haven for wildlife as well
as homo-sapiens. Its popularity
continues to grow not only within
Birmingham, but also nationally as
a result of the continuing success
of the Jazz and Folk festivals.
Although our application to the
Heritage Lottery Fund was not
successful, we are actively looking
at alternative ways of funding
and implementing our plans for
improving and restoring the Park,
including the development of an
environmentally green heritage
centre that can be used by the
community in general and schools
in particular. Additionally it is
hoped that progress can be made
on implementing our long held
plans for an open air theatre based
in the dell. We are also currently
developing a project that will
explore the sounds and heritage of

Soundscape Project
* During the Jazz Funk& Soul Festival and the Folk Festival, access
for Park members will be limited to the Chantry Road gate.
Please check the Notice Boards for any other events that may occur.
Moseley Park has applied to The
Heritage Lottery Fund to finance an
exciting new project. The project
will explore the heritage and
soundscape of Moseley Park, and
combine these to create a sonic
walk that brings over 300 years of
Park history to life in an engaging
and sometimes surprising way. It
has been designed to be accessible
to anyone who has a smartphone.
This technology was chosen
because it will enable the majority
of visitors to explore the history of
Moseley Park every day, throughout
the year.
Moseley
Folk
Festival*
The 2014 dates are Friday/
Saturday/Sunday 4/5/6
September.
For further information visit
www.moseleyfolk.co.uk
THIS
TECHNOLOGY
WILL ENABLE
VISITORS TO
EXPLORE THE
HISTORY OF
MOSELEY
PARK
A specially designed walk will lead
visitors to five points at which a QR
code will link them to a soundpiece
which explores a specific aspect
of the Park. Each soundpiece will
be created by different groups,
including schools, drawn from the
local community. There will also
be opportunities for local people to
share their Park stories at a series
of drop-in recording sessions. The
Park is also an excellent wildlife
habitat and one of the soundpieces
will investigate the natural heritage
of the Park using recordings of
wildlife as well as historic records
Finally, Roy Cockel, one of our
long standing trustees, has retired
from the board. We are indebted
to him for the work he has done
over the years in establishing
and stewarding our restoration
programme. The trust would not
be where it is today without his
efforts. We are really pleased to
welcome Nicola Harris as a new
Trustee and we look forward to
working with her.

sightings to explore how this has
changed over time.
We hope the project will go live in
the Autumn.
