SANTA BARBARA COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT MICHAEL W. DYER FIRE CHIEF 4410 Cathedral Oaks Road, Santa Barbara, CA 93110 NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Vegetation Fire LOMPOC, Ca. August 27, 2014 – At 4:05 pm, Santa Barbara County Fire Department (SBCFD) responded to a reported vegetation fire, located south of the Harris Grade summit. A total of eleven engines, two water tenders, three dozers, four crews, eight air tankers, and 2 helicopters responded. SBCFD is being assisted by Lompoc City FD, Vandenberg FD, US Forest Service, Cal Fire, California Highway Patrol and SB Sheriff. The fire spread initially from 5 to 10 acres, at a moderate rate of spread on the east side of Harris Grade. The fire was slope driven and burned in pine trees. Wind was not a factor. Temperatures were in the mid to high seventies. The forward progress of the fire was stopped at 6pm and is estimated to be 10 to 20 acres. As of 7:45 the fire is 44% contained. Crews will continue to work throughout the evening and morning to mop up and contain the fire. The cause of the fire is was determined to be a byproduct from a passing vehicle (catalytic converter).
