Worcesters whippets Worcesters Whippets is our early morning running club which was initially introduced to help some of our Year 6 pupils be ready to learn at the start of the school day by channelling their energy levels. Running three mornings a week, the session initially engaged nine pupils. Due to its growing popularity, from the start of the Spring Term we decided to divide Worcesters Whippets into three groups, Monday (girls), Tuesday (general) and Wednesday (elite runners). There are now 16 Year 6 pupils in total with more pupils looking forward to taking part. Write Dance The purpose of the Write Dance programme is to provide pupils with the opportunity to develop the fine motor skills required to improve their handwriting skills. The movements are driven by music with a great deal of emphasis placed on encouragement and enjoyment. The programme was initially introduced in September for Year 1 pupils who were struggling with their fine motor skills. Following the success with these students a group of Reception children are now also involved. Swing Hang Club The Swing Hang Club was introduced at the start of the Winter Term with the aim of developing the gross motor skills of those involved. Initially aimed at Year 1 pupils, the programme looks to develop gross motor skills by helping participants develop their core strength, balance and coordination through a variety of different exercises and movements. The Swing Hang Club has proven to be a success with all pupils showing at least some improvement. As a result, the Club has now been opened up to Reception children. Team Games The Team Games session was set up to help pupils in Year 1 learn to develop their cooperation skills. Whilst many of the participants involved are well coordinated and enjoy PE they struggle to work together as a team. This session introduces pupils to working as a team for a common goal. Qualities such as sharing, taking turns, working together and encouraging one another are continually emphasised to the participants. The pupils really enjoy the sessions and have all made progress. Gifted and Talented A number of pupils attending Worcesters have been identified as being Gifted and Talented in sport. As part of Worcesters' commitment to sport in school these pupils are given 40 minutes per week additional sports coaching. The pupils are divided into two groups, Years 2-4 and Years 5-6. Sessions look to enhance the skills of participants by offering more challenging activities. Activities include, football, athletics, basketball, tennis and many other sports. After School Athletics There are a number of pupils at Worcesters who really enjoy athletics. As a result, the Worcesters After School Athletics Club was set up in September to engage pupils who want to get involved. Sessions run on Thursdays for Year 3 and 4 pupils and Fridays for Year 5 and 6 pupils and last 45 minutes. Pupils take part number of athletics based activities including, sprinting, long distance running, hurdling, jumping, throwing and relay races. Lunchtime Football Part of the lunchtime sports activities at Worcesters is the Lunchtime Football Club. Sessions last for the duration of the lunch break and involve a short warm up followed by a practice/drill based on the theme of the term. Themes include, passing, shooting, turning, dribbling, defending and creating space. The last part of the session is dedicated to matches. Aimed at a different junior year group every day, anywhere from 20-35 pupils take part daily. Friday lunchtimes known as 'Freebie Friday' are saved for the year group that has performed the best during their football day earlier in the week. Year 1 PE lessons Year 1 pupils take part in two class PE lessons per week. The lessons follow the national curriculum with a number of different areas of focus. These include: Creating Games Sending and Receiving (with hands and feet) Bouncing and Catching Travelling with the ball Gymnastics Dance
