Zimmer® VerSys® Trial Head Surgical Technique
Introduction
The VerSys® Trial Head and the MIS Trial Head
utilize a 12/14 taper, and are available in a variety
of diameters and neck lengths for use in total hip
arthroplasty.
Step 2: Seating the Trial Head
There are two styles of trial necks utilizing either a
taper press fit or a C-ring for interference fit (Figure 1).
The trial necks are only compatible with the respective
stem systems.
This technique will cover the four steps for using
either Trial Head.
General Information
Trial reduction can be accomplished by either leaving
the rasp in the femoral canal and attaching an
appropriate trial neck to the rasp or by trialing off the
implant neck.
Step 1: Selecting the Trial Head
Optimal femoral component height and offset can be
evaluated through preoperative radiographic analysis.
Preoperative planning also allows the surgeon to have
the appropriate implants available at surgery.

The objectives of preoperative planning include:
1. Determination of leg length
Note: If using an MIS trial head, it is recommended
that a suture be placed through the holes of the
provisional head to aid in retrieval of the trial head
if it becomes dislodged into the surrounding tissues
(Figure 2).
2. Establishment of appropriate abductor muscle
tension and femoral offset
3. Determination of the anticipated component sizes
Visually inspect the trial heads for damage prior to use.

Ensure that the provisional head is placed on the trial
neck or onto the implant trunnion sufficiently to be
retained during trial reduction (Figure 3).

Step 3: Trial Reduction
Perform a trial reduction, and check leg length and
offset. Repeat as necessary until optimal offset and
leg length are established. When satisfactory leg
length, offset, range of motion and stability have been
achieved, dislocate the hip.
Step 4: Removing Trial Head
Firmly grasp the trial head and remove from the
surgical site.

Verify that the rasp, trial neck and trial head are fully
seated.
NOTE: Although relatively rare, the provisional head
may dissociate from the trial neck or stem trunnion.
Due to the size, shape and texture of the provisional
head, a separated head is at risk of being introduced
into the wound. Once in the wound, the head may
become difficult to visually locate if it migrates deep
in the wound or medial to the iliopsoas tendon.
The provisional head is radio-opaque. Should the
surgeon need to visualize the head radiographically,
Computed Tomography, plane X-ray using an A/P and
lateral views and ultrasound may be used.*
