The Rhode Island Public Health Institute (www.riphi.org) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to promote community health and eliminate health disparities in Rhode Island and beyond. RIPHI oversees public health programs, conducts translational and policy research, and trains students and public health practitioners. Our current portfolio includes programs related to food insecurity, nutrition and active living, hepatitis C and HIV, pre-exposure prophylaxis to reduce HIV transmission, geographically-focused health interventions, and other efforts to reduce health disparities. RIPHI often partners with Brown University and the Rhode Island Department of Health to develop innovative public health programs. ! The mission of the ‘Food on the Move’ mobile market program is to improve the dietary behaviors of underserved RI residents by increasing access to affordable, healthful food through a discount, mobile food market that travels from neighborhood to neighborhood ‘making the healthy choice easy and affordable’. ! Position Summary: This position is a key Team Member to deliver the Rhode Island Public Health Institute’s (RIPHI) innovative and evidence-based ‘Food on the Move’ mobile, healthful food markets to a variety of sites in low-income neighborhoods, worksites and colleges across the state. ! Market staff is responsible for assisting with the daily operation of the mobile market and serving our customers. The mobile produce market brings fresh, affordable fruit and vegetables to sites around Rhode Island. Responsibilities include stocking the truck with new inventory at the start of each day, unpacking and setting up produce displays, maintaining displays throughout the market, cashiering and packaging produce for customers, and ensuring customer satisfaction. It also includes assisting with closing out the market at the end of the day, running inventory reports using the Point of Sale (POS) system, and reporting regularly to the Food Access Coordinator and the Executive Director of RIPHI. Typically two markets are held per day; early morning and evening work may be required. The applicant will work collaboratively with other Market Staff and the Food Access Coordinator. The position includes driving a van with a trailer; applicant’s willingness to train to drive the vehicle is essential. ! This position will ensure a positive image by providing courteous, friendly, and efficient customer service to clients and client site personnel. Job Functions: • Stock the mobile trailer each morning by packaging and loading crates of produce into the vehicle • Unpack and display the market produce at the market and continually monitoring quality of all products being sold in accordance with market protocols. • Use the Point of Sale cashiering system to manage, track and report pricing and inventory. • Report on sales to the Market Team Leader at end of each site and follow procedures to maintain supply of produce, which may include ordering and sourcing additional produce. • Break down market displays and repackage produce at the end of each market in compliance with market protocols. • Attend RIPHI staff meetings and events when applicable. ! Requirements: • Knowledge and appreciation of ‘Food on the Move’ mission and desire to bring fresh fruits and vegetables to client sites. • Provide clear communication with clients and excellent customer service. • Follow procedures and policies set by Market Team Leader, Network Manager and other Team members for all aspects of ‘Food on the Move’ Mobile Market. • Available to work a flexible schedule based on needs of client sites. • Must be able to bend and lift loads, up to 50 pounds. Push and pull carts weighing up to 100 pounds. • Must be able to respond to constructive criticism and feedback from supervisors and colleagues. • Ability to work effectively as a team member is essential to this position. • Must possess a valid driver’s license and must be interested and willing to be trained to drive the mobile market, which is a large van and hitched trailer. • Market Staff position is subject to change over time given needs of the organization. ! Other Desirable Skills: • Bi-lingual in English and Spanish or Portuguese is desirable but not required • Interest in and knowledge of nutrition and healthy eating • Experience in customer service is desirable !
