Robert Owen Memorial Primary School Newsletter: February 2016 Dear Parents/Carers, February is drawing to a close and finally so too are the dark mornings! With only 5 weeks to go until Easter, there’s a lot going on! Rotary Quiz Challenge Well done to our P7’s who took part in the Rotary Quiz Challenge on Thursday 18th February. It was very well attended, with nearly all Lanark Cluster schools taking part and most with 2 teams. Both of our teams were made up of pupils from Rooms 13 and 14, who thoroughly enjoyed their experience. Congratulations to: Robbie Davenhill, Erin Kelly, Alison Howat, Lori Rogerson, Nicole Goodwin, Kerry Prentice, Cameron Shaw and Douglas Steer. Sponsored Bounce Fun Day – Thursday 3rd March This week, your child should have given you the information relating to our Sponsored Bounce Fun Day next week. There are lots of activities planned by staff, with a big focus on health and wellbeing. All money raised will go towards resources, projects and events within the school throughout the year and we are very grateful for your support! Thank you to Mrs. McCallum for organising this. World Book Day We will be doing our bit for this event by celebrating our favourite authors and the stories they wrote on Friday 4 th March. All children (and staff!) are invited to dress up as their favourite character from a book on this day and there will be lots of literacy-based activities going on in our classrooms. Artsnet Many of our children are involved in the upcoming Artsnet performance at Hamilton Town Hall on Wednesday 2nd March and Thursday 3rd March at 7.30pm. Tickets are now on sale for this and can be purchased through the Box Office at Hamilton Town Hall. Good Luck to all our budding young performers! Parent Council The next meeting of the Parent Council will take place on Tuesday 8th March at 7.30pm in the school. Any parent wishing to come along would be made very welcome! Child-Smile This very important service will be visiting our school and nursery on Thursday 10th March. Rag Bag Collection Thank you to everyone who contributed to this worthwhile cause. All monies will help towards Eco activities within the school. NURSERY NEWS Daily Mile The morning children have enjoyed taking part in this and soon it will be the turn of the afternoon children to do the same – so far, so good! Daffodil Tea for Marie Curie The staff and children would like to invite you to their Daffodil Tea on Thursday 24th March, to raise funds for this very worthwhile cause. More details will follow soon. Nursery Garden Committee Staff and children are very keen to develop the Garden Area in the Nursery and would like to set up a committee of volunteers to help them. If this is something you think you could help with, or would like to be involved in, please come along to the first meeting of the committee on Friday 11th March at 11am. All help, support and talent would be very much appreciated! Vision Screening A date for this has to be confirmed in the very near future – we will let you know as soon as possible when this is happening! IMPORTANT INFORMATION: HEALTH AND SAFETY Parking I have no doubt that this subject has been risen a number of times: car parks are always busy places and often the cause of much friction. In relation to ROMPS, there are several things to consider: A large number of children come to school in buses and taxis: they will always take priority over other car park users! Staff need to know they will be able to park their cars when they come to work: this means that only staff should be using the spaces in the centre of the car park up until 9am. Blocking the entrance or exit, double parking or sitting with your engine running compromises pupil safety and the safety of adults walking into the playground to pick up their children. Please keep these points in mind when accessing the car park. No one is trying to be awkward or difficult: the safety of the pupils at ROMPS will always be the first priority for any actions or decisions made. Dogs Please be aware that dogs are not allowed in the school grounds, unless they are guide dogs. This is a Council Policy. I understand that many parents walking their children to school will use this as a time to walk their dogs too. However, some of the pupils may be scared of dogs and we do also have some children who are allergic to them: we must take this into consideration. We would ask that parents with dogs see their children into the school gates, but do not come in themselves. Your cooperation would be greatly appreciated. As always, keep an eye on our website for any other news or events: it’s going to be a busy time! Angela Gibson and the Staff of Robert Owen Memorial Primary School and Nursery
