IN TOUCH May 2017 President’s Report by Don Peterson Elections: VOTE!! I can not stress enough, the importance of getting out to vote. It should be no surprise to any teacher, when I say public education has not done well under the Liberal government. The most significant positive changes to education in BC has come about through the courts. Government should be making positive decisions on education. Not decisions that require us to take them to court. Just weeks after being re-elected 4 years ago, the Liberal government started talking about a 10-year contract that would have included pay increases that were to be indexed to some other public sector unions. I can not imagine another 4 years with Christy Clark. Today, the polls are saying that the Liberals have a 50% chance of forming another majority government. If they get in, I wonder what attacks we face in the weeks to come. Please get out and vote. Please share what you know about education, encourage your friends to vote. Annual General Meeting: 2017-2018 Executive Committee The following members have been elected to be on your Executive Committee for 2017-2018: President: Don Peterson 1st Vice President: Paul Ledet 2nd Vice President: Michael MacEwan Secretary: Sarah Loeb Treasurer: Elaine Ting Local Representatives: Luanne Marchand, Elaine Ting Professional Development Chair: Holly Mair & Maren Chapman Program: Luanne Marchand Professional Communication: Deryck Ball Social Justice: Amanda Byrne-Jungen & Angie Noel Health and Safety: Les Lowe First Nations: Ginny Underwood TTOC Representatives: Christa Cowie & Natasha McDowell Bargaining: Mark Skanks Members-at-Large: Rhayna Archer, Sue Paltiel, and Vacant I would like to give a special thanks to the outgoing 1st Vice President, Jeffrey Bishop. This year Jeffrey competently chaired all our meetings, and took time out of his personal and professional schedule to make himself available to the Association. I hope to see Jeffrey back on the executive in the future. The final vacant Member at Large position will be filled at the June 7th, 2017, Representative Assembly. -2- S.T.A. IN TOUCH May 2017 PRESIDENT’S REPORT CONTINUED Spring Staffing: The first round of mobility postings has already come out. There are 38 positions currently posted. Most of them are full time positions. Most of these positions are from the need for more enrolling teachers because of the implementation of our restored language. Please take note that there has been a change in how you apply for postings. You now have to order the jobs that you apply for in order or preference. This is a new process, and if you encounter any challenges with this new process, please let me know and I can pass that information on to HR. Mobility postings are “Round 1” but really they come before AND after the NOIL round. After this first round of mobility postings, NOIL letters will be coming out. I don’t know where the lines will be at the three levels yet. Once the letters are out, those teachers are invited to a meeting which explains the process and are provided with a list of all teachers from the most senior NOILed teacher down. It is important for teachers, particularly those who are qualified at more than one level, to look at this list carefully. If there is a teacher junior to you who has been excluded from the NOIL process who holds a job that you could do, you have the opportunity to challenge that exclusion. If you do receive a NOIL, I encourage you to attend the NOIL meeting to better understand the process. If you don’t, I encourage you to look over the Staffing LOU on the ESS page, and ask your staff rep to clarify any questions you might have. Staff Committee Corner by Don Peterson School Union Representative Training Please be sure that there is a representative from your school attending the May 15 th, 2017 SURT. The focus of this day will be to create a greater understanding of the restored language. The AGM passed the following motion on Wednesday: The AGM recommends that staff at all schools elect their STA representatives and staff committee chair for the 2017/2018 school year prior to the end of the 2016/2017 school year. We are asking that you elect your staff committee chair and STA representative before the end of the school year. If you know who your reps will be, before May 15th, 2017, consider having them attend our SURT on May 15th, 2017. E.15.1 The administrative officer in consultation with the Staff Committee or staff shall meet prior to May 15 as part of the school planning process for the upcoming school year for the purpose of discussing the timetable and staff assignments available for the next school year and, if necessary, any new or existing teaching positions that require filling in the school. I brought up this clause last month. By May 15 th, 2017, administration should have consulted with either the Staff Committee or the whole staff about the school planning process for next year. -3- S.T.A.
