POP's 2014 Yearbook Student Team and Advisor
Recognized by Balfour for Yearbook Excellence! Only 3% of all public, private, and some
universities receive this recognition! Mrs. Barnum, in her 10th year as school year book
advisor, had the pleasure of letting her student
yearbook team know that they were recognized by
Balfour Publishing for all their hard work on the
20132014 POPCS Yearbook. The award was a
Featured recognition for their outstanding
contribution to scholastic journalism.
The Prince of Peace Christian School yearbook is
showcased in the
2015 Yearbook Yearbook publication by Balfour.
Over the years, 7 of the POPCS yearbooks had
earned an Honorable Mention and one has earned a Feature mention for
photography.
The year book team was noted by Balfour for capturing the moments of the year
in words and pictures. The POPCS 20132014 Yearbook was recognized for
designs, coverage, copy, and photography and was studied by staffs across the
nation. Balfour publishes over 75,000 schools' yearbooks and those featured in
Yearbook Yearbook are in the top 3% of all the books they publish for public,
private schools and even major colleges and universities.
The 20132014 POPCS Yearbook staff included (Back to Front) Ben Fugger,
Alex Cantu, JC Weed, Caleb Syverson, Claire Barter, Karlie Guta, Lauren
Broomhall, Alana Watts, Lindsey Struthers, Celeste McKeel, Emily Moussa,
Alex Reitinger, Noel Miller, Lauren Chance, Sam Rahmati, Tyler Thompson,
and Hannah Mulvehill. POPCS junior, Claire Barter, reacted to the announcement by saying, "I had a
feeling! I just knew this year was going to be our year!
Wendy Rocco and her husband, Rick are the proud
parents of two POPCS students Olivia, 2nd grade
and Jameson, PreK 4. They have been part of the
Eagle family for 3 years now, being led there by
circumstances beyond their control that they believe
turned out to be a true blessing from God. The
Roccos have met so many amazing people and
couldn't be happier with their decision to entrust their
children to the unbelievable teachers and staff at
Prince of Peace.
Wendy, also known as 'Coach Wendy' to some of
the 2nd grade girls, helps coach several sports for
Olivia and her classmates. Sharing her love of sports
with the next generation is something she cherishes. Further, she enjoys seeing the girls work hard and
improve from season to season. The Christlike
example that she sees manifested in the parents at
POPCS, both on and off the playing field/court,
inspires her to try and live a better life each day. Wendy has enjoyed the opportunity to volunteer more
over the past few months and looks forward to many
more years as part of the POPCS family!
Rev. David Taylor
(No picture available at press time)
David Taylor's children have been attending classes
at Prince of Peace since 2008. Since that time David
has volunteered for numerous activities. You have
probably seen him in the mornings at the Shop for
POP table with D Murphy. David has helped out with
lower school activities including
outdoor education, engineering day,
lunch relief, and fifth grade class trips. This year he has also added Destination Imagination
Team Manager to his résumé, leading a team made
up of 3rd and 4th grade students. David has also
visited the PreK classroom over the past two years
sharing his musical gifts with the children. As they go
through the alphabet, David has brought in
instruments that begin with those letters: B banjo, G
 guitar, H harmonica, M mandolin, T
trumpet/trombone, U ukulele.
David has also volunteered to go on several middle
school trips including Pine Cove, Grand Canyon,

years in ministry this fall and believes that
volunteering with the activities of his children at
Prince of Peace is an extension of that ministry. A
line that David has picked up at youth ministry event
speakers at Group and Youth Specialties is, "The call
to Christ is the call to serve." David has done this at
Prince of Peace.

On Saturday, March 28, the Prince of Peace Academic Team, representing

listening, reading, vocabulary, speaking, writing, art, and music. There were
25 schools from the DFW area at the District Contest, which was held at
Liberty Christian School in Argyle. Ribbons were awarded for 1st6th Places. For the 6th consecutive year, the Elementary Team, consisting of 51 students,

The 4th Grade Science Curriculum opened up a
unique opportunity to see "STEM at its Best
where kids are getting first hand experience with
Science and Technology" (Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Math). This visitor has traveled the world giving
demonstrations to all ages, in schools and in the
corporate sector. His name? The Murata Boy
robot! 4th and 5th grade students watched and learned,
listened and asked questions, and participated as
they attended small learning sessions in the
computer lab. Murata Boy demonstrates uses of sensors, communication
modules, control and circuit technology; things which we all experience in daily
living as we use technology in a variety of ways. Murata Boy has amazing functions such as stopping, standing still, maintaining
stability, responding to a Magic Stick for directional cues, obstacle detection,
climbing an incline, and maintaining balance on and Scurve balance beam. "Laidback Luke" by Jackson Sharp

The evening included a huge scavenger hunt (Amazing Race, really), and a

The kids ate tons of food, ran all over the school, watched movies, and stayed

The students are enjoying the transitions that have been made in the High
School Computer Lab due to the generous donation from a POPCS family. The computer lab has been reoutfitted with new tables, flexible Noodle chairs,
24" monitors, and individual lamps for each computer. The larger monitors
have doubled the workspace for the students, much like a dual monitor would,
and thus improved the students' productivity. With the students having
individual lamps at their computer, their workspace can be lit as needed and
the overhead lights can be turned off. This also aids in better concentration
when working with all the graphics on the computer screen.
Everyone is invited to drop by the high school lab to try out our "wiggle" chairs,
our ambient lighting, and mood music. It is a comfortable and relaxing way to
increase student learning and productivity.
A very special thank you to the generous POPCS community family who made
this all possible!

On January 1621, a group of five Prince of Peace seniors and two POP
teachers, as well as a former POP teacher and POP alumni, traveled to Port
AuPrince, Haiti. We spent the majority of our time at Bon Berger (Good
Shepherd) Lutheran Church and School, a sister school to Prince of Peace.
We taught English, completed crafts, sang songs, played games, held a Bible
study, and had fellowship together while interacting with students ranging from
first to the twelfth grade.
Our sixday trip also included playing with and caring for orphans at Josie's
Orphanage, attending Bon Berger Lutheran Church for worship on Sunday,
and conducting visits to Bon Berger students in their homes. It became very
evident to us of how God was at work in the lives of the Haitian students.
When they were asked what they do for fun in their free time, all of the
students responded with "we read the Bible and pray to Christ." The Haitian

students spoke about how simple their lives were; but, they also shared how
blessed they are because of faith. The smiles on their faces, as they warmed
up to us, shared so much love and joy. We all took away from this trip the fact
that life can be so much more simple than we sometimes make it. We at Prince
of Peace are so immensely blessed by the Lord. We walked away convicted
that we are called to two things: first, to praise and thank Him for all He has
done and secondly, to give back to Him in return.
We would like to thank all those who prayed for us and financially provided us
with the means for us to go on this trip. Just as God is working in Haiti, we
believe God is working at Prince of Peace. The week before spring break, our
high school theology classes did a series of activities where we were able to
share our stories and experiences in Haiti. Our students call it the "Week of
Sacrifice" and our students strive to give one thing up for a week in order to
live a life that is more simple. On Thursday at chapel, our group shared
testimonies of how God worked through us and in us during our trip. We also
collected a financial offering from the students that will go to support Bon
Berger Lutheran School. We closed that chapel with a simple blessing from
Scripture "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in
Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit."
Romans 15:13. Please continue to pray for the pastors, teachers, and students
of Good Shepherd. We look forward to being reunited with them on our return
trip next year!

WHAT IS THE
SHOP FOR POP PROGRAM?
SHOP FOR POP is an essential PTF fundraiser/gift
card program in which retailers sell gift cards to
POPCS at a 2% to 13% discount. Families buy these
cards at face value and redeem them at face value.
POPCS gets the difference in revenue. Just purchase
the gift cards from the school to use at a favorite store
or restaurant. Money earned is donated to the school
for special projects. Past earnings have been used to
fund bleachers and lights for the football field, as well
as the current cafeteria campaign.

teams gain points by winning games and work to move up in the point
standings. All of these competitions culminate in the much anticipated March
Madness Color Group Tournament, an event made up of four games taking
place in four weeks, and a chance to be crowned the Champion of the Color
Groups.
The spiritual aspect of Retreat is also carried on throughout the school year.
The senior leaders of the Color Groups meet in their Theology classes to plan
a devotion time that takes the place of chapel. These devotions happen once a
quarter and allow for students to be positive influences in the spiritual lives of
their peers. These devotion times, along with friendly competitions, create a
unity within Color Groups and promote the development of relationships that
last beyond the years spent at Prince of Peace.

POPCS School Life Chaplain
John 21:16 Jesus said, "Simon, son of John, Do
you truly love me?"
It is now some time since our Easter celebration. We've sung our hosannas, we've raised our
voices in prayer and shouts of thanksgiving. We
know beyond a shadow of a doubt that He is
alive! We may not physically see Him, but He
seems to appear in various times and in various ways in our daily lives. And
then He surprises us with questions, with challenges and with confirmations. Why?
1. Is it to address His choice of our worthiness to serve in His Kingdom? We
may wonder if our confessions are sincere and complete enough to merit His
attention. Have our repeated failings, mistakes and denials affirmed our lack
of integrity? Are others better equipped to further His mission? He reminds
usYou did not choose me, but I chose you. I have called you by name and
you belong to me. You are fearfully and wonderfully made, equipped with
every resource needed to fulfill the mission to which you have been called.
2. Is it to help us understand that our Christian life is defined by His gift of a
living, vibrant faith, empowered by the Holy Spirit for love and service to
others? He reminds us that it is not our decisions, our efforts or our activities
that define our relationship to our Lord for it is by Grace that we have been
saved. He made us, He gifted us, He empowers us, He daily forgives us, He
restores us, He chooses to live with and within us.
SPREAD THE GOOD NEWS!

3. Is it to assure us that He can and will use the troubles, the mistakes, the
failures in our lives, not to punish us, but rather to use them as Kingdom
builders? The forces of evil, the world and our own desires try to convince us
that not only does God hate evil, He is just and all of our problems are due
punishment for our sinful lives. But Christ insists, "It is finished", "Your sins are
forgiven", "Share my love".
Yes, He invades our lives each day. Have you heard His Call? Are you
troubled with His question"Do you really love Me?" My hope and prayer is
that when you are challenged by that question, you may see the face of your
Savior, you will not be afraid, you will not be concerned if others are facing the
same trials, whether they are more worthy than you are, but that you will
experience the true Peace of Christ's death and resurrection and let His Light
shine through you as you boldly proclaim"Yes Lord, I love you because you
first loved me. You love me now in spite of everything and you will continue to
love me into eternity". THANK YOU FOR YOUR LOVE!
