Match Report:
Churchill recorded their first win of the season against a vastly improved NCEA team who did not
record a single point last season and who had already defeated the relegated Blyth CC. Churchill
began well retaining possession and showed intricate passing without really creating out and out
opportunities. Charlton and Wallace caused problems down the flanks but chances were restricted
to shots from outside the box. Despite the positive start it was NCEA who took the lead with a shot
from the edge of the box which was well saved by Kirtley (who was making his debut) but fell to an
NCEA player in the box. Churchill responded well and Evans missed a guilt edge chance after being
out through by Bell. CCC equalised soon after when a cross from Wallace was laid off by Evans for
Walton pounce for the first goal of the season. NCEA regained the lead soon after following a CCC
corner. The ball broke and Wearmouth was caught out in possession. The ball played to the forward
who was one on one with the last defender and curled a great effort in off the post. Again CCC struck
back just before half time, this time Charlton with a shot come cross sailed into the goal. 2-2 half
time which was disappointing but ensured CCC were still in the game. The second half became a
little bit of a drab affair. NCEA worked hard to stop CCC passing the ball and chances were few and
far between. NCEA were unlucky not to go 3-2 up seizing upon a slip from Adam Mulligan only for
the player to fire wide. Soon after the same thing happened in the favour of CCC, when Evans
pounced on an error and he coolly finished past the advancing goalkeeper. Bell then completed the
rout when he scored from a free kick from 25 yards curling the ball precisely into the corner of the
net leaving the keeper no chance. A good win and 3 important points to get the season started.
