THE OWL’s CHOICE
RETOLD by VANESSA ANDREOTTI
Once upon a time there was a very bad storm and
an owl was trying to find some shelter.
She saw a chimney and decided to rest for a while. But
a very strong wind blew her down the chimney.
So, she found herself inside a house and
she started looking around.
What kind of place is this?
It smells strange and
it is very dry.
She found a hamster in a cage. She felt sorry for him.
Do you want me to help you out?
Of course not. I was born here. The girl
that owns me loves me and cares for me.
She gives me food everyday and I have
my own exercise wheel!
But don’t you want to move
around and play outside?
No I don’t. It’s safe in here and I might
get eaten by a bird or a cat.
She went to another room and found a sleepy dog.
Hello, would you mind if I eat a bit of your
food in this bowl? I’m a bit hungry.
Go ahead. It is not my food
anyway. It’s the cat’s food.
Do you like living here?
It is great. The girl who owns me loves and
cares for me. She even lets me play in the
garden sometimes.
She went to the girl’s bedroom and met the girl.
Hello little owl! Would you like to be my pet and live
here? I promise I will look after you. I will collect
beetles in the garden every day to feed you and I will
love you forever.
The owl thought very seriously about it.
Hummm… this could be good.
I’m a bit tired of working so hard
every night…
But when the owl was about to say ‘yes’, something
happened. The cat opened the window to come inside.
Meeaawww!!!
With the window opened, the owl could smell the trees and the
wet earth outside. The storm had stopped and she could see
the starry sky.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO IN HER PLACE?
She didn’t think twice. She flew towards the window.
She opened her wings to feel the breeze of the night.
Goodbye girl,
goodbye cat!
This feels great!!!
And off she went!
